Gervonta Davis Hits Back at Talk That Mayweather Promotions Is Protecting Him

Gervonta Davis will take on Isaac Cruz on Dec. 5 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles to headline a Showtime pay-per-view.

The lightweight contender Cruz (22-1-1, 15 KOs) is a replacement opponent substituting in for Rolando Romero, who was pulled from the announced fight following a series of sexual assault allegations.

Over the last two years, Davis (25-0, 24 KOs) has crusaded across three divisions and scored knockout wins against Mario Barrios at 140 pounds, Leo Santa Cruz at 130 pounds and Yuriorkis Gamboa at 135 pounds.

The aforementioned foes are certainly credible challengers, but they’re not the much-desired dance partners that a majority of the boxing public wants Davis to fight. The top names, in alphabetical order, include Devin Haney, Ryan Garcia, Vasiliy Lomachenko, Teofimo Lopez Jr., Regis Prograis, Shakur Stevenson and Josh Taylor.

Davis defended himself by saying the same could be said for others.

“They’re saying Mayweather Promotions are protecting me and not letting me fight top fighters,” Davis told The Last Stand Podcast with Brian Custer. “Whoever is in the top four, I don’t know who they’re talking about. Name somebody that is fighting the top whoever. You don’t see any other top fighters fighting top guys. I don’t know when it’s going to happen. It’ll probably happen next year or the year after that. I don’t know but don’t just put everything on me and say I’m not fighting top guys.

“The only guy that fought somebody but didn't want to give him his rematch [to Lomachenko] is Teofimo. He didn’t even know he was going to beat him. I don’t even want to talk about him because I don’t want to give anybody else press but name the other top guys that are fighting top guys. Y’all keep saying, ‘Gervonta, Gervonta, Gervonta.’ It’s only because I’m doing the [pay-per-view] numbers I’m doing and not even saying I’m fighting top guys. I’m not fighting the guys that y’all want me to fight. That’s why y’all keep screaming out my name, that’s why. That’s the only thing I can say because nobody else is fighting top guys. Name them if they’re fighting. It’s nobody. What’s the guy [Haney] that is going to fight right before me [on Dec. 4]. JoJo [Diaz] is not a top guy. He’s not.”

Davis will be fighting for the third consecutive time on Showtime pay per view. Judging by both the PPV buy rates and gate receipts he’s pulled for his previous three fights, Tank is a box office bulldozer.

That puts him in a much more desirable position than his opponents in calling the shots.

Davis said he’s never turned down a challenge and that he’s ready to pounce on the opposition whenever he feels is the best time to make the right fights.

“Nobody ever came and said 'do you want to fight this fighter' and I said 'no.' You can ask Mayweather Promotions or Al Haymon. They never came to me and said a fighter's name, and I said 'no.' Never,” said Davis.

“There are so many people calling my name. It’s more so I have to catch them when I can catch them. That's where I am at right now. Sit back. They are calling my name. Okay. Catch them at the right time. Catch them while they're sleeping. That's what I am doing. Just pop right up on them. Say, 'here it is. You've been calling my name.’”

Press Release | Marriaga Sees Ramirez as 'Do or Die' Opportunity on Davis-Cruz PPV

Three time world title challenger Miguel “The Scorpion” Marriaga (30-4 26 KO’s) from Arjona, Colombia is full speed ahead in training camp as he prepares for his Showtime pay-per-view clash, scheduled for December 5 at Staples Center in Los Angeles, against world ranked contender Eduardo “Zurdito” Ramirez (25-2-3 12 KO’s).

Their fight will be the opening bout of the telecast, which has a main event with Gervonta Davis colliding with Isaac Cruz in a lightweight title fight.

WBO #13 WBC #13 Marriaga is gunning for one more crack at a world title in 2022, a feat that is very hard to accomplish in today's era.

Marriaga is fresh off a win from this past April, taking out Jorge Garcia Jimenez by sixth round TKO in Mexico City, Mexico.

“We are happy to be back on the big stage,” stated Marriaga “I know this fight is do or die for me, you can expect me to give 1000% for this bout as I still have my goal of becoming world champion.”

The Scorpion has been preparing in Mexico City for his fight where he has spent the last six weeks in a high altitude camp sparring boxers with similar styles to Ramirez.

He believes Ramirez is a level below of his past opponents like Oscar Valdez, Nicholas Walters and Vasiliy Lomachenko.

“Ramirez doesn’t impress me, he’s a great challenger but nothing that I haven’t seen before,” notes Marriaga “I fought the best southpaw in the world (Lomachenko) and I’ve lost to great champions. I think my experience will help me edge this fight.”

This bout will be presented by Mayweather Promotions and TGB promotions in association with All Star Boxing, Inc.

Super welterweight contender Luis “Cuba” Arias will take on veteran Vaughn Alexander in a 10-round showdown that tops the non-televised undercard this Sunday, December 5 in a Premier Boxing Champions event from STAPLES Center in Los Angeles.

The event is headlined by five-time world champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis defending his WBA Lightweight Title against hard-hitting contender Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz live on a SHOWTIME PPV telecast that begins at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

Tickets for the event, which is promoted by Mayweather Promotions, GTD Promotions and TGB Promotions, are on sale now and can be purchased at AXS.com.

The undercard will also feature undefeated prospects entering the ring as Baltimore’s Malik Warren (5-0, 5 KOs) takes on Eric Manriquez (7-12-1, 3 KOs) in a six-round super featherweight attraction, Washington, D.C.’s Jalil Hackett (2-0, 2 KOs) in a four-round welterweight showdown against Darynn Leyva (1-2-1, 1 KO), and heavyweight Carlos Garcon (2-0, 2 KOs) battling Jason Soto (3-1-1, 3 KOs) in a four-round duel.

Born in Milwaukee, Arias (19-2-1, 9 KOs) returned to the ring in June and earned a career-best victory in defeating former unified champion Jarrett Hurd on the Mayweather vs. Paul SHOWTIME PPV undercard. The 31-year-old has faced top competition throughout his career, including going the distance with former middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs in a 2017 duel. Arias racked up wins in his first 18 pro fights after turning pro in 2012 and the Mayweather Promotions’ fighter now trains in Las Vegas. He will be opposed by the St. Louis-native Alexander (15-6-1, 9 KOs), who most recently fought to a split-draw against Winfred Harris Jr. in August. The older brother of former two-division champion Devon, Alexander owns a victory over previously unbeaten Money Powell IV in 2019.

Probably the best matchup for Tank, except LSC, in several years. Isaac can bring it on. However, Tank still is a heavy favorite, he's faster and more polished, he can outbox and stop Cruz.

This bout "Should Be" a Thrilling and Entertaining bout for all the Boxing fans. It could be a dud though. Tank might catch him very early and the paranoid ref might do the typical modern day paranoid ref thing.

I just love it when there are compeditive fights with a bit of a narative, i can get around them (dont know the feathers really, but looks decent on paper).... ITs no doubt better than the canelo undercard, that didnt have a single fight i wanted to see.
But your right, the difference between this undercard ad canelos is probably 2000 buys or somthing.

Honestly id never heard of isac cruz until this was announced... so its literally tank flying solo. The balls it takes to have someone defend there fake WBA reg 135 belt, against a 23 year old, 5'3 mexican that noone has heard of, on PPV is outrageous. I havent seen annnnny media on it....
