Was Sugar Ray Robinson the #1 contender for the lightweight title early in his career?

Robinson was first ranked in Ring magazine at the lightweight limit in May 1941.

So that would have meant Ray Robinson vs Sammy Angott for the Lightweight Title.

Robinson did fight Angott.

I have the film of it.

Angott was an amazingly strong lightweight.

Featherweight Willie Pep made the mistake of fighting Angott and got his first loss.

There are films of Angott fighting full grown welterweights Robinson and Fritzie Zivic

and in both fights Angott IS THE AGGRESSOR most of the way.

Amazing.

I wonder if Angott was scared to defend against Robinson?

I wonder if Robinson was scared to defend against Charley Burley?

I wonder if Ali was scared to give Jimmy Young a rematch?

I wonder if Jack Johnson was scared to defend against Sam Langford?
