ezzard charles had an underated left to the body
he had a vicous well timed left hook to the body, a punch many people dont give him credit for. he used in almost all his fights. i just was watching the marshall charles II fight and charles knocked him out with that left to the body
.....even those who think ezzard was a great fighter usually think of him as one who moved and boxed and punched from the outside. he did, but he was also one great infighter...one of the best. when he was past his prime and kept fighting on he was more of an infighter than a stick, punch and move boxer. when the spring was out of his legs and his coordination fading, that's when he stayed inside more than out....and for a while was highly effective there.

agree. even in 1950, charles chose to fight on the inside vs joe louis and he completley outfought the big man on the inside. charles inside fighting preformance vs colley wallace was also an incredible display of infighting.Jaclem wrote:.....even those who think ezzard was a great fighter usually think of him as one who moved and boxed and punched from the outside. he did, but he was also one great infighter...one of the best. when he was past his prime and kept fighting on he was more of an infighter than a stick, punch and move boxer. when the spring was out of his legs and his coordination fading, that's when he stayed inside more than out....and for a while was highly effective there.
but o man that left to the body is a punch no one gives charles credit for. he crippled ATG lloyd marshall with that shot putting him down for the 10 count. marshall was still very good in 1946.

yea i have the full 10 rounds fight on tape. its excellent. wallace looked good too, he was a big man with skills, good jab, and a very powerful right hand. colley wallace was every bit a very poor mans louis(which is no disgrace)Jaclem wrote:..brockton.....the coley wallace fight is aperfect example of ezzard's infighting. i haven't seen a film, or anything of that fight..just remember it from live tv....but now that you've brought it up i can damn near see it in my mind...one of ezzard's late career masterpieces....

..ezzard died from lou gehrig's disease. the correct medical terms is too hard and long for me to spell here. amatrophic lateral sclerosis may be close. (in fact, it may be closer than the away i spell gehrig.) he lived longer than most of the victims of this horror, because it didn't affect his breathing as quickly as it usually does. he lingered in a progessively worsening state. in the later years he was able to communicate with his wife by a code they had worked out...a series of eye blinks. i knew one of the nurses who saw him regularly when he came to the hospital....and she said even when he was unable to hold his head up straight (it was braced in his wheel chair) he still managed to smile a greeting. When he first came in she didn't know who he was and called me, knowing only that he was a boxer. there is more to this .....but i'm sorry....i have a hard time with these memories. maybe later....
..re: charles jackson II....i saw both fights on tv. in fact, i just looked through some memorabilia and found my actual scoring of charles/jackson, but i don't know which fight it is....not dated. i have it 6 rounds to four in favor of charles...but my bias may be showing. one judge has it 6-2-2..another 8-2 and referee goldstein 6-4 ...all for jackson. my notes say ezzard mistakenly quit his body attack and tried to go for the one big punch. a mistake because the crazy jumping, constantly moving style of jackson made that damn near impossible.....especially at this stage of his career, when only the need for money kept him fighting.
again, not sure which fight this is. whichever, i do recall ezzard doing the same in both fights....going for one punch.
at this late date i really can't express an opinion on the winner of the latter one...except it was obvious that ezzard was way, way past his prime..speed and combinations gone....and it was saddening to watch.

lloyd marshall II fight is the best filmed fight of a peak charles u will see. watched the full fight last night, god was charles special! as complete a fighter as u will ever see. he was so fast! the way he moved was as smooth as u will ever see! his combinations and punching arsenal came from all different angles and they were so accurate! he looked so much like sugar ray robinson. charles was the best!
