Goulamirian-Igorot: World Of Boxing Secures Rights To Title Fight, Eyed For November

Arsen Goulamirian is set for his first title defense since the pandemic.

The unbeaten WBA cruiserweight titlist will next face mandatory challenger Aleksei Egorov in a bout targeted for November. The matchup was the subject of a purse bid hearing, which was won by Russia’s World of Boxing with a bid of $210,000 as the only participant for Monday’s session.

World of Boxing—represented by Maksim Mikhaylov at the hearing—secured the rights to the fight with the accepted bid, which was accompanied by a non-refundable deposit of $21,000—ten percent of the submitted amount.

The $210,000 purse amount will be split 65/35 in Goulamirian’s favor as the defending champion, leaving the unbeaten Armenia-born boxer with a $136,500 payday. The remaining 35% percent—$73,500—will go to Russia’s Egorov (11-0, 7KOs) as the mandatory challenger and WBA “Gold” titlist.

The targeted dates for the fight are November 6 in either Moscow, Russia or Paris, France, or November 20 in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Goulamirian (26-0, 18KOs) has not fought since December 2019, when he scored a ninth-round knockout of unbeaten Constantin Bejenaru in Marseille, France. The entirety of Goulamirian’s career has taken place in France and Belgium since his May 2011 pro debut.

Egorov has been out of the ring since outpointing Vasil Ducar in an attempted stay-busy fight last March in Kazan, Russia. The 30-year-old from Obninsk, Russia claimed the “Gold” title following a third-round knockout of Roman Golovashchenko in June 2019. He was officially declared as the mandatory challenger to Goulamirian’s title earlier this year, with the fight first ordered on February 12. The round of talks originally carried a March 13 deadline to reach terms. Events didn’t quite work out that way, though with the WBA coming back around to order a purse bid earlier this month.

Per WBA purse bid terms, World of Boxing has twenty days to submit signed contracts with both participants along with a finalized date and location.

Whoa, what a crazy low-ball bid! Man, no one is interested in CW's. Great fight, but you'd expect someone to pony up more money than that considering a title is on the line.

I've not seen either in forever, and I don't have the time to catch up. I can't pick a winner, but I'd go with Goulamirian as he has more experience and is proven.

WBA cruiserweight king (super champ) Arsen Goulamirian (26-0) defends the title against Russian Alex Egorov (11-0) December 11 December 11 in Cannet, France.

Goulamirian's last defense. which also was his last fight, was almost two years ago when he stopped Constantin Bejenaru. The layoff is mainly due to coronavirus.

Egorov holds the WBA Gold title and is ranked # 2 by the WBA.

In a featured bout, Kevin Lele Sadjo (16-0) and Gustave Tamba (16-1) meet in an all-French fight for the vacant EU super middleweight title.

A good bout, quite unpredictable clash of the two fresh and hungry fighters. Well, Arsen gotta be favored, but Egorov seems like a decent comer. No one of them is proven really, so this fight is defining for both.

Goulamirian felt unwell and then tested positive for covid. Crazy that it wasn’t identified earlier.

Goulamirian tests positive for Covid-19

Today’s scheduled fight against Egorov is canceled

Unfortunately, World Boxing Association (WBA) cruiserweight super champion Arsen Goulamirian tested positive for Covid-19 and his defense against Aleksei Egorov today in Ekaterinburg, Russia, is called off. The 200-pound monarch was supposed to reappear in the ring after almost two years of inactivity but his final Covid test before the mandatory fight gave the result that will not allow him to return just yet.

WBA Reorders Cruiserweight Title Fight

Arsen Goulamirian and Aleksei Egorov are back in each other’s sights.

The pair of unbeaten cruiserweights are due to meet in a mandatory title fight that was reordered by the WBA on Tuesday. Goulamirian will make his first title defense since the pandemic, and also first since gaining sole recognition as the WBC cruiserweight titlist after secondary titleholder Ryad Merhy relinquished his reign earlier this month.

“Egorov is ranked number two and was chosen after Ryad Merhy, who was originally scheduled to face Goulamirian to decide the sole champion of the category, decided not to fulfill the bout,” Carlos Chavez, chairman of the WBA Championship Committee stated in a letter to both camps, a copy of which was obtained by BS.com. “Now, the champion must face his mandatory challenger, having gone two years and eight months without doing so and having been granted two optional defenses during that time.

“Egorov earned the right to challenge the world champion due to the fact that he was the [cruiserweight] Gold champion and that status put him as the mandatory challenger.”

The WBA has assigned a 15-day negotiation period dating back to August 23 when the fight was first ordered. A deal must be reached by September 7 to avoid a purse bid hearing—which was the case the last time this fight was in play. Fittingly, the order on Monday came on the one-year anniversary of a purse bid hearing that took place for this very fight, which was to have taken place last December 11.

Goulamirian (26-0, 18KOs) tested positive for Covid, the result learned on the eve of the fight which was canceled outright. It marked the second straight time that Goulamirian—an Armenian boxer who fights out of France and often trains in Big Bear, California—withdrew from a scheduled title fight during the pandemic, having previously suffered a rib injury ahead of a November 2020 clash with Russia’s Yuri Kashinsky.

All told, Goulamirian last defended his title in a ninth-round knockout of unbeaten Constantin Bejenaru in Marseille, France. The entirety of Goulamirian’s career has taken place in France and Belgium since his May 2011 pro debut.

Egorov (11-0, 7KOs) has been out of the ring since outpointing Vasil Ducar in an attempted stay-busy fight last March in Kazan, Russia. The 31-year-old from Obninsk, Russia claimed the “Gold” title following a third-round knockout of Roman Golovashchenko in June 2019. He was officially declared as the mandatory challenger to Goulamirian’s title earlier this year, with the fight first ordered last February 12. The round of talks originally carried a March 13 deadline to reach terms.

Events didn’t quite work out that way, though with the WBA coming back around to order a purse bid last August. World of Boxing—Egorov’s promoter—won with a winning bid of $210,000, only for Egorov to be left standing at the altar due to Goulamirian’s positive Covid test coming too late in the promotion to secure a replacement.

A tighter turnaround comes with this batch of negotiations, which follows Belgium’s Merhy’s departure from the title picture and the division altogether.

Goulamirian-Egorov set for Nov. 19

The mandatory bout for the World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Cruiserweight Championship between the champion Arsen Goulamirian and his challenger Aleksei Egorov has been confirmed for November 19 at La Palestre Arena, in Le Cannet, France.

Goulamirian will return to the ring to defend his 200 lbs. belt and the Armenian-born, French citizen will have the opportunity to be at home and in front of his fans for this great fight.

The 35 year old puncher had not been able to step into the ring due to various postponments of the fights, but now he is ready to show his strength once again.

Egorov earned the right by being the Gold champion of the division and the best available contender to face the champion. The undefeated fighter had been waiting years for such an occasion and now has the opportunity to go to the monarch’s house and take the black and gold crown from him.

Both Goulamirian and Egorov are undefeated in their professional careers. The former has 26 fights won, with 18 knockouts, while the latter has knocked out 7 of the 11 opponents he has beaten.

Press Release

On Saturday, November 19, undefeated Parisian, Arsen “Feroz” Goulamirian will return for the first time in nearly three years to defend his WBA Super World Cruiserweight Championship against undefeated #1 contender Aleksei Egorov at La Palsestre in Le Cannet, France and live on live on Canal + (7 pm).

A native Armenian, Goulamirian (26-0, 18 KOs) will be making the second defense of his super championship against Russia’s Egorov (11-0, 7 KOs) in the 12-round main event of a night of world-class championship boxing, presented by Y12 Boxing Promotions.

The pair had been scheduled to fight last December, however, the defending champion tested positive for Covid and the fight was postponed. Thankfully Goulamirian recovered.

The 35-year-old Goulamirian has been preparing for the bout in Big Bear, California, under the watchful eye of well-known trainer Abel Sanchez. He won the Interim title in the 2018, the WBA Gold World belt later that year and was upgraded to the Super champion in 2019. Goulamirian has since made successful defenses against Kane Watts (KO 4), and Constantin Bejenaru (RTD 9).

Inactive himself since 2020, 31-year-old Egorov is a former Russian amateur champion. In his nearly six-year career, he has already beaten respectable contenders including Lateef Kayode (RTD 6), Tommy Oosthuizen (UD 10) and Roman Golovashchenko (TKO 3).

On the stacked undercard, hard-punching EBU European Super Middleweight Champion, Kevin “The Phenomenon” Lele Sadjo (18-0, 16 KOs) from Saint-Maur, Val-de-Marne, France, will make the first defense of his title in a 12-round battle against mandatory challenger, Emre Cukur (19-1-1, 3 KOs) of Munich, Bayern, Germany, in the co-main event.

Also scheduled is a 12-round battle for the vacant EBU European Super Welterweight Championship between undefeated 23-year-old Milan “Natsuko” Prat (17-0, 14 KOs) of Drancy, Seine-Saint-Denis, France, and IBF #9-ranked Abass Baraou (12-1, 8 KOs) of Berlin, Germany, as well as an appearance by 2016 Olympic Silver medalist and amateur boxing star, "Virtuoso" Sofiane Oumiha looking for his third consecutive professional victory against an opponent that is TBA.

“This is the most significant event in France in decades. The best domestic fighters are fighting in career defining fights versus their mandatory challengers,” said Yohan Zaoui, Chairman of Y12 Boxing. “France must once again establish its place among one of the best nations in boxing and this event is a step in that direction. On November 19, boxing fans from around the world will see the reemergence of boxing in this great nation.”
