Boxing rumors you heard that turned out to be false...
Re: Boxing rumors you heard that turned out to be false...
More of a myth than a rumour, but Pep winning a round without throwing a punch.

For years, we heard that Angelo Dundee loosened the ropes in Zaire. It turned out that he tightened them.
Re: Boxing rumors you heard that turned out to be false...
Speaking of Dundee, hasn't the whole long rest between rounds after the knockdown in Ali vs Cooper been disproved as well? I'm sure I read somewhere that the break ended up being 64 seconds instead of 60 seconds not the extra minute or two as has been told so many times.

Yes the whole story of there being a long delay in-between rounds was a myth, maybe one of the most famous myths in boxing as so many people were convinced by it including Cooper who for years believed it to be true.p4p1 wrote: ↑05 Jan 2021, 07:45

There was once a rumour circulating that Angelo Dundee always looked after the best interests of his own fighters, which turned out to be false
It all started when Ali was allowed to fight when it was clear that not only was he shot but was also showing the early signs of Parkinsons which would have been blatantly obvious to everyone around him and especially Dundee. For me the rumour was confirmed to be false after witnessing Dundee tell the doctor to "get the fukk away from the guy" when the doc went to check on Pinklon Thomas in between rounds in the Tyson fight. Thomas was viciously KO'd by Tyson in the very next round

It's shameful that Ali couldn't even pass basic tests at the Mayo Clinic and he was still passed fit to fight Holmes.bollocks wrote: ↑05 Jan 2021, 13:06 There was once a rumour circulating that Angelo Dundee always looked after the best interests of his own fighters, which turned out to be false

He passed those tests. But if you read the results its nuts they passed him to compete in a boxing match - passing tests for a normal guy are different than an athlete about to be punchedControversial wrote: ↑06 Jan 2021, 16:31It's shameful that Ali couldn't even pass basic tests at the Mayo Clinic and he was still passed fit to fight Holmes.bollocks wrote: ↑05 Jan 2021, 13:06 There was once a rumour circulating that Angelo Dundee always looked after the best interests of his own fighters, which turned out to be false

For instance he could hop well on one foot

Didn't the Mayo clinic find an irregulaity with Holyfield's heart? For which Holyfield then got a a faith healer to fix (for a small fee of several hundred thousand dollars)

Yes, he couldn’t put his finger on his nose from what I remember, a sure sign that something is wrongJeff_lacy_ko wrote: ↑07 Jan 2021, 22:22He passed those tests. That Bowe avoided Lewis his whole career is the most egregious modern one to persist. He literally signed to fight him.
Re: Boxing rumors you heard that turned out to be false...
Too bad this fight never happened. It would have been a super fight in 1993 1994 before Golota damaged Bowe. I actually would have gone with Bowe at his very best which was during these years even into 1995.

Divides opinion but 92-95 Lewis is toast. Golota gave him a drubbing but he hadn't prepared for a real fight. He would have taken Lewis as seriously as he did JLG.

The WBC featherweight champs wanted to unify the crown with the great Eusebio Pedroza
Re: Boxing rumors you heard that turned out to be false...
I remember retelling that story of what a beast Ayala must be while Cuevas stunned on eggshells was muttering " Incredible" afterwards.
Then to find out it was a hype job. Man I felt like an idiot
I also read about Duran koing a horse and Pep win i g a round without throwing a punch.
And i swear I once read welterweight Bobby Joe Young and heavyweight Jimmy Young were cousins.

Re: Boxing rumors you heard that turned out to be false...
There's the one about Mexican Joe Rivers fighting for the lightweight title against Ad Wolgast. In the 13th round Ad threw a fight-ending foul punch at the exact moment Rivers threw a legal knockout punch. The referee, on the take for Wolgast, literally picks him up and cradles him in one arm while counting Rivers out with the other arm. He then drops Ad to the floor and sprints out the ring and down the tunnel before the disbelieving crowd have a chance to go from stunned to furious.
That's the version I read in some "the weirdest moments in boxing history" type book I probably found in a second-hand bookshop. Surely too crazy to be true and it probably isn't, alas. Seems most likely to me that the story of the controversial ending (was Wolgast's punch a foul?) just got exaggerated over time, but I'm no historian so I can't say more. Certainly the BoxRec page for the bout make no reference to the idea that a KO'd Ad was held up by the ref in any way.

News that Gerry Cooney absolutely destroyed Michael Spinks in two rounds, severely breaking his jaw. Turns out it was just shipboard scuttlebutt (I was in the Navy at the time).

around 1997 there was talk of a Butterbean vs Dennis Rodman fight. a commentator said it fell thru because Dennis was going to be paid 3 million but he wanted 26
someone online said Eminem going to try his hand as a boxer based only on him jumping into the crowd at one of his own concerts and knocking a guy out
Wladimir Klitschko was poisoned before the first Lamon Brewster fight

Re: Boxing rumors you heard that turned out to be false...
i heard that deontay wilder was poisioned before the fury rematch, that there was a spy in his locker room, that his own trainer had a conspiracy to backstab him, that fury's team cursed him with bad juju, that fury's gloves both somehow had the padding removed while also having 'egg weights' in them, that the ref was biased against wilder due to fury's white privlege, and that his costume designer intentionally made his ring entrance costume so heavy that it weakened his legs before the fight
