Prison fighters?

Prisons have given us great fighters such as Sonny Liston, Clifford Etienne and last but certainly not least Bernard Hopkins. I am sure that I am forgetting a few.

Who is todays closest equivalent to these guys? Will we ever see another great fighter originate from behind the bars?

Off the top of my head, Vaun Alexander, is a high level journeyman/almost gatekeeper for having done a very long stretch in prison. Not anything to sneeze at but nothing close to Bernard Hopkins.

Scott’s story is one of the most interesting and inspirational in all of boxing. Simply amazing.

Mike Tyson spent time in a juvenile detention center where he was introduced to the sport.

On another note, did prisons keep records of their in-house bouts?

And if you were #1 in your prison did you ever get to fight the #1 in say SuperMax? or would the logistics of that be too much.

Apparently they used to let boxers have furloughs to compete on the "outside" too.

Looks like most prison boxing programs ended in the 80s and 90s. Think of the incarcerated career someone like Ike Ibeabuchi could have had.

I wish they still did have pro boxing in prison. Purses could be applied to restitution and boxers could possibly leave prison not owing. The victim would get restitution and the boxer gets it a little easier when they do get out

It's a good thread, perhaps a side of boxing history that hasn’t been covered extensively before.

I think that in order to get on the list you have to have done some serious time and had a somewhat successful career afterwards or started your boxing inside a jail or a juvenile detention facility.

This creates a P4P jail list from this thread that looks something like this:

Yeah I don’t think we can include people who boxed successfully and then happened to go to jail also. Prison Boxer makes me imagine a guy who got his start or hit his stride while in or just after being released from prison.

I don't think Tyson is a better p4p fighter than BHop, especially after his rape charge.
