Shelby, Montana: Jack Dempsey V Tommy Gibbons (1923)

A bunch of optimistic oil speculators brought Dempsey’s defence against Gibbons to remote Shelby, Montana. It proved such an economic disaster that the town was rendered effectively bankrupt.

I taught for Orange County Schools from 2011 to early 2021. How’d I miss the pro boxing events at the high school? Orange County, Virginia is a very rural area. What a shock to see these pics of the local high school here on BoxRec! I’ve moved out of state now, but…

The Emerald Queen Casino, Tacoma, WA, USA
Boat capacity 2,500

The Battle at the Boat was the longest running professional boxing series at any tribal casino in the United States, beginning in 1997 and continuing until 2020. In its 20+ years, The Battle at the Boat hosted over 120 fights, including five world title bouts.

Searching for new revenues and employment for its people, the Puyallup opened the Emerald Queen Casino in 1996 on a paddlewheel riverboat, the Emerald Queen, which it berthed in the Port of Tacoma. The riverboat was acquired for $15 million and could accommodate 2,000 people. In 2004, as part of an agreement with the Port to accommodate further commercial development of the waterway, the tribe closed the operation on the boat and its shore-side property. The unused Emerald Queen riverboat remained docked in Tacoma until 2023, when it was sold to a barge operator based in Seattle.

Most notable fights (liberally applied):
Carlos Manuel Baldomir Vs Vernon Forrest - 2007
Mario Santiago Vs Hector Velazquez - 2007
Eddie Chambers Vs Calvin Brock - 2007
Dmitry Kirillov Vs Vic Darchinyan - 2008
Andre Dirrell Vs Mike Paschall - 2008
Vic Darchinyan Vs Abner Mares - 2010
Yonnhy Perez Vs Joseph Agbeko - 2010
Jermaine Franklin Vs Jerry Forrest - 2019
