Your fighter of the year

Post by Cent0089 »

Considering pandemic, this year was not that bad in boxing. Who is your fighter of year ?

1. Canelo Alvarez
pros:
+ fought two elite undefeated fighters in Saunders and Plant
+ defeat them in stoppage fashion and looked good
+ became undisputed champ
+ fought third time, despite Yildrim was B class
cons:
- he was clear favorite in all his fights and there was no real drama in the ring

2. Oleksandr Usyk
pros:
- defeated heavyweight champion Joshua in his hometown before his fans in dominant fashion
- finished strong, almost get stoppage
- he was underdog, former cruiserweight
cons:
- it is only one fight he had this year

3. George Kambosos
pros:
- defeated undisputed champ at lightweight in Lopez in entertaining fight
- he was huge underdog, it was probably upset of year
cons:
- fight was postponed many times, lot of fans lost interest
- it was close decision
- only one fight in year

4. Terrence Crawford
pros:
- he finally got real elite fight against Porter
- defeat him more dominant than fighters before, showed no flaws
cons:
- we are all waiting for Spence fight
- Porter was defeated 3 times before that
- only one fight this year

5. Tyson Fury
pros:
- ended Wilder trilogy with spectacular KO
- fight of year candidate
- heavyweight boxing is pretty popular now because of him
cons:
- fight was postponed
- Wilder wasnt considered that much of a threat like in second fight
- only fight this year

6. Josh Taylor
pros:
- defeated undefeated champ Ramirez
- became undisputed
cons:
- it was a close fight, where he was a favorite
- only one fight this year

7. Gervonta Davis
pros:
- fought two times this year
- beat undefeated fighter in higher weightclass
cons:
- his oponents were not elite
- got pretty much exposed in his fight against Cruz
- his management avoiding real threats

8. Vasyl Lomachenko
pros:
- fought two times this year
- won both fights in dominant fashion
cons:
- his oponents were not elite, even weaker than Davis oponents

9. Oscar Valdez
pros:
- beat Miguel Berchelt, who was considered best at that weight by many
- he was underdog and won the fight in dominant stoppage fashion
- fought two times this year
cons:
- his fight with Conceicao was close, could go either way, many thought Valdez lost

10. Other, who ?

gotta be cinnamon, no one else really has the combo of activity + good wins

honourable mention: kambo, usyk, taylor (all with 1 big win but only 1 fight). donaire (1 good + 1 decent win). fury's wilder win is good, but less so than the other 1 win guys imo. hed beaten wilder easier the fight before and it was rehashing a win he already had.

valdez had a great win vs berchelt but the conceio fight easily couldve been a draw or loss

It’s canelo clearly. So clearly

I would have Parker up there, chisora twice, plus Fa.

Very weak fighter of the year comp this year.

I think minimum 2 fights to be fighter of the year. Unless you go undisputed at heavyweight with the fight of the year and KO of the year…

i dunno, i think scoring 1 A level win is miles better than even 10 wins over a chisora or fa, especially when one of those couldve gone against you. i do appreciate the activity but joe not in the convo for me.

i think 1 win can still be eligible, but its obviously a weakness for the guys nomination

another honourable mention is donaire : KOs over ouballi and gaballo , think plant + saunders from canelo is better though, plus canelo has a 3rd win. cant really see around him, but the debate for #2 is tight

Id agree with your order of the top 10 too.

Nobody comes close to Canelo at the moment. Fought 3x (almost 4x) this year. Not ducked anyone in his division .. looked devastating picking up those belts too.

Usyk is a credible second becoming a heavyweight title holder in style.

The rest on your list whilst deserving, are all a long way away from these two.

Canelo, since he was the most active champion, who became undisputed in addition to that. Yet there's still some grudge about him. After all, he completed a unification against Saunders and Plant, but not Golovkin and Charlo, or Bivol and Beterbiev.

Canelo did... something. While I think the Saunders win was great, I don't think much of the Plant win. Reminds me of when Crawford destroyed Indongo to unify 140. I voted Taylor only because I thought he beat Khongson this year. Looking back, I'd pick Usyk since he has the single best win of the candidates this year. Won his fight in dominating fashion too.

Totally understand the votes for Canelo, but my Fighter Of The Year is the grand old Filipino Flash, Nonito Donaire, due to his pheonix-like resurgence with two emphatic 4th round KO Ws over previously unbeaten foes at a lower weight in his late 30s.

Nonito continues to be the best boxing has to offer.

Didn't Fury do the same thing twice, just not as good the second time?

logan paul! without a question.

frikkin beat mayweather. knocked out holyfield. thought mike tyson a lesson in power punching!

atg! already now. at least in my book.

jake close second. with his k.o. run vs tube-. basketball and- 'rolling around on the canvas' atg's.

by a mile then 3rd - beef boi. obvious choice.

then in the realm of 'does it matter?' somwhere come usyk, fury and whoever the tiny guys are.

Teofimo Lopez. Last two fights were extremely entertaining and against great opposition. Win or lose the guy is going to put on a great show.

But mate, the d*ckhead attitude before and after, multiplied by two if you count the d*ckhead dad is in-flippin-tollerable.
I mean seriously, what an utter knobgobbling dildo washer that kid is.

2 true. But if he would sign up to fight Mikey Garcia at 140 I wouldn't miss that 1 for the world. Acctually I will be very interested in seeing his next fight probably regardless of who he fights. The dude just needs to fight more and talk less.
