Heavyweights : Tim Witherspoon vs. Deontey Wilder
Heavyweights : Tim Witherspoon vs. Deontey Wilder
12 rounds,who wins?
Re: Heavyweights : Tim Witherspoon vs. Deontey Wilder
Witherspoon definitely was a better boxer. He could beat the hell out of Wilder, if he wouldn't be caught.

Re: Heavyweights : Tim Witherspoon vs. Deontey Wilder
1996 and prior Witherspoon was only stopped once in his career. After 1996 he was stopped three more times. But if he had a bad night he really did have a bad night like the night he lost a split decision to perennial journeyman Everett Martin.
Wilder has demonstrated that he does have a pretty good chin considering the punishment he took in the final two fights with Fury, so if Witherspoon was to win it would have to be by decision but even at his best I'm not so sure he has the movement to really stay away from a guy like Wilder.
We must not forget that James Smith knocked out Witherspoon in one round basically by bum rushing him and not stopping with the power punches so as much as I like Witherspoon I'm going to have to say he loses this hypothetical.

Wilder has to end this quick to win, and that means getting Witherspoon in the 1st or 2nd round. After that, Terrible Tim boxes too well. Most likely scenario I see is Witherspoon by TKO around the 11th.

wilders certainly a tall man isnt he. but how many guys did wilder beat who spoon wouldn't ?
wilders record and title run that are associated with greater class are built up mostly on pretty mediocre opposition tbh, though no doubt he was a power freak. this would be a good match up. tim had a bomb of a right himself

how many guys has wilder beat who you dont think spoon would beat?Joe.Kelly wrote: ↑22 Dec 2021, 20:40 Of course Wilder would win. 'Spoon was pretty good, but he just wasn't in Wilder's league. Wilder's power and superior size would probably be insurmountable.
I don't know if this would end by stoppage or if it would go to the scorecards. 'Spoon was tough, so maybe he goes the full route.

I do think Witherspoon gets a little more credit than he deserves but think he was a big strong guy .And think he would ko Wilder somewhere around the 8th Rd on using good boxing a great jab and good defense.
Bonecrusher did stop him but that was more akin to a mugging I think that he totally surprised him.
Wilder shows he always has a punchers chance, but Witherspoon would be expecting that long wild right and i think evade it while chopping away himself.

Peak Witherspoon was arguably against Larry Holmes. That version of Tim would literally play with any version of Wilder.

Witherspoon had great technical prowess -- most of all, a very tricky right hand.zuru wrote: ↑12 Jan 2022, 20:43 I do think Witherspoon gets a little more credit than he deserves but think he was a big strong guy .And think he would ko Wilder somewhere around the 8th Rd on using good boxing a great jab and good defense.

And if you think Wilder's right hand was effective against Fury, just imagine what Spoon's would have done.

Wilder didn't really know how to fight. Witherspoon did. Sounds overly simple, but it's true.

That's bullshit, the Windmill isn't that awful. He lacks boxing abilities bady, but he can fight.Ambling Alp II wrote: ↑17 Jan 2022, 11:51 Wilder didn't really know how to fight. Witherspoon did. Sounds overly simple, but it's true.

Alp is right.Wilder can't fight. He proved he does have that power ,and can turn a fight around if he lands it solid, but against a quality opponent,he'll probably lose.DrDuke wrote: ↑17 Jan 2022, 12:00That's bullshit, the Windmill isn't that awful. Plenty of hard punchers just have that going for them.Jose Baret comes to mind.He was supposed to be a destroyer.Make him miss or show a good chin and or defense and he's very average.

Has powah, but can't fight, how he can deliver it? He has a couple of quality wins in his padded resume.zuru wrote: ↑17 Jan 2022, 15:55Alp is right.Wilder can't fight. He proved he does have that power ,and can turn a fight around if he lands it solid, but against a quality opponent,he'll probably lose.DrDuke wrote: ↑17 Jan 2022, 12:00That's bullshit, the Windmill isn't that awful. Re: Heavyweights : Tim Witherspoon vs. Deontey Wilder
deontay's just so tall though
Re: Heavyweights : Tim Witherspoon vs. Deontey Wilder
That's one of the bad things about him though. He has all that height and reach but doesnt use it effectively. Lots of wild flailing. Imagine if he popped that jab like Hearns and used that height. He could be so much more effective. Especially having had Breland ,another long tall fighter as his trainer.
I think Witherspoon would just come in behind "his" effective jab cause Wilder doesn't use his properly. I could be wrong...
