Jerry Quarry vs Henry Cooper

Post by AngryGoon38 »

This one dawned on me, out of nowhere, today, after completing my work-shift.
The Cooper from the 1st Ali/Clay bout, circa 1963, vs the best version of Quarry, 1967-1970.
12 or 15 rounds.
Personally, I see a nice classic Slugfest, for at least the first few rounds. They both had issues, pertaining to getting cut, Badly, and early. Even though Cooper might floor Quarry, with that lethal left hook, I see Quarry's iron chin and jaw withstanding Cooper's offensive barrages en-route to an eventual later rounds tko, likely in the 10th, imo.

Jerry was a much better fighter. He definitely would deal with the sluggish Cooper. Our 'Enry, of couse, would have a puncher's chance, but it was more likely for him to be stopped. Quarry by dec or a late TKO.

Deep down, I want Cooper to beat Quarry by decision, but I have to agreed with you, Quarry had a greater chin and would get the better of Cooper in the battle of the left hookers with good counters and combinations for Quarry to either win by decision or late round stoppage on a cut like you said.

Cooper had a chin problem, so I don't believe he could withstand Jerry's power shots. Put all these factors together and it's impossible to avoid the conclusion that Quarry wins by stoppage.

BTW, in his autobiography, Cooper even admitted that he and his manager wanted nothing to do with Quarry. Per Cooper's own words, Quarry's counterpunching right hand would easily cross over Henry's left-hook. Therefore, from the perspective of how their styles matched up, even Cooper said that Quarry was all wrong for him.

I suppose that there's the outside chance Henry might get lucky, and clobber the easy-to-hit Quarry with a powerful left-hook to the chin, thus winning by KO. Certainly we'd have to agree that Cooper at least stood a puncher's chance of beating Quarry. That's true. But I doubt very much Cooper would get lucky in this fight.

Easy to hit?
Quarry was never easy to hit -- and, as you note, a superb counterpuncher.
No chance Cooper would "get lucky" either.
