Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez vs. Jermall Charlo - Who wins?
Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermall Charlo possible for May 7th on Cinco de Mayo
Canelo Alvarez and Jermall Charlo are reportedly in talks for a fight on May 7th. This will be a huge fight expected to occur at 168, with the undisputed champion Canelo (57-1-2, 39 KOs) defending his four super middleweight titles against the bigger and stronger Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs) twin.
ESPN’s Mike Coppinger is reporting the news of the talks for a fight between the WBC middleweight champion Charlo and Canelo. The discussion of the Canelo vs. Jermall Charlo fight has lit up social media with great interest in this fight, as it promises to be action-packed from start to finish.
When he’s dialed in, Charlo is one of the best fighters in boxing. Of course, on the flip side, when Charlo is unmotivated, as we saw in his last match against Juan Macias Montiel, he struggled a little.
Still, Charlo makes his fights exciting and drama-filled due to his power, lack of defense, and willingness to go to war.
“I’m hearing it’s much more likely he’ll fight Jermall Charlo on Cinco de Mayo. There are talks right now for that fight,” said Mike Coppinger on ESPN.
Canelo fighting Charlo would be a huge fight. It would attract a lot of interest from fans worldwide, as it would be the first compelling fight Alvarez has taken since his controversial win over Gennady Golovkin in 2018.
Jermall Charlo’s best wins:
• Julian ‘J-Rock’ Williams
• Austin Trout
• Sergiy Derevyanchenko
• Matt Korobov
• Cornelius Bundrage
• Juan Macias Montiel
Since that fight, Canelo has faced badly flawed champions at 168 and 175, seemingly veering away from the opposition that fans have wanted him to face.
Although Canelo has beaten five world champions since 2018, none were considered any good. In other words, they were all paper champions who had won their titles by fighting marginal opposition.
The Mexican star Canelo, 31, talked about moving up to cruiserweight to challenge WBC champion Ilunga Makabu on May 7 on Cinco de Mayo. Still, he appears to have changed his mind.
Perhaps the combination of the enormous backlash Canelo has taken from boxing fans and the fact that the WBC cruiserweight champion is still tied up with a fight against his mandatory Thabiso Mchunu on January 29th was enough to go in another direction.
If Canelo does choose to fight Jermall, you got to give him HUGE respect for taking this risk and providing the boxing public an exciting fight.
There’s talk that Charlo might price himself out of the Canelo fight, as he’s rumored to be asking for $15 million. That’s a little more money that past Canelo opponents Daniel Jacobs and Sergey Kovalev got in fights against him, but not much more.
Canelo would likely need to fight Charlo on Showtime PPV, as he’s with Premier Boxing Champions, and he fights on that network. That shouldn’t be a show-stopper, as Canelo fought former IBF super middleweight champion Caleb Plant on Showtime PPV in his last fight.

Re: Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez vs. Jermall Charlo - May 7, 2021?
Yeah I read about that too. Charlo would be a valuable scalp for Canelo in terms of hype. People would praise Canelo more for beating Charlo(US fighter) than beating Makabu.
Anyway, the big tests for Canelo would be at 175, and if the top guys from 175 would want to fight each other then it'd be even better in terms of competition!

It's a one of the best matchups for Canelo and the best for Charlo.

Texas is where Jermall Charlo currently resides.apollo creed wrote: ↑10 Jan 2022, 07:50 Yeah I read about that too. Charlo would be a valuable scalp for Canelo in terms of hype. People would praise Canelo more for beating Charlo(US fighter) than beating Makabu.
Texas has 11½ million Mexican residents.
Texas is where the AT&T stadium is located, which was the venue that allowed Canelo to set the US indoor attendance record of 73K for the Saunders bout.
Simply put: a fight between boxing’s most famous Mexican, which is obviously Canelo, and a world champion from Texas competing in his own backyard, staged during Cinco De Mayo weekend, is going to be a massive commercial success.
Towards the end of 2019, the PBC attempted to get Canelo to agree to signing a two-fight deal with them, with the first opponent being Jermall Charlo.
So Al Haymon’s team have been eager to make the Canelo-Charlo bout for at least two years.
Whilst beating Jermall Charlo doesn’t enhance Canelo’s legacy in any way, it’ll be a massively lucrative stay-busy bout, which is probably the biggest payday opportunity out there for him from those fighters not-named GGG.

He's fought at all of them, all located in Texas.
Fight makes sense..
Majority of fans will just be Mexicans cheering Canelo. Charlo would actually be boo'd In his hometown.

I prefer this fight to all others for Canelo at the moment. Let the LHWs stew in their own juices, if they won’t face each other.
Charlo makes nothing but sense.

Sneaky bit of wording right there. He may be the bigger and stronger Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs) twin, but he'll be the smaller and less strong opponent in this fight.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑10 Jan 2022, 06:31 defending his four super middleweight titles against the bigger and stronger Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs) twin.

I’m no fan of Charlo’s, but he’s achieved more within the last two years than Andrade, Golovkin, Bivol, Beterbiev and Benavidez.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑10 Jan 2022, 13:27He's another that hasn't done much at 160, never mind going up to 168..
In my mind, none of the top-dogs at 160lbs at 175lbs are willing to fight each other, simply because they don't want to risk losing their place in the Canelo mega-payday queue.
They're all pretty much as bad as each other, but the least worst resume from the last two years is currently owned by Jermall Charlo.

Thats true. Indeed it's a very lucrative fight business-wise. I wonder if Canelo would have trouble making 168 ?Enlightened-One wrote: ↑10 Jan 2022, 10:23Texas is where Jermall Charlo currently resides.apollo creed wrote: ↑10 Jan 2022, 07:50 Yeah I read about that too. Re: Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez vs. Jermall Charlo - May 7, 2021?
Id rather him fight 175 champs, or the freak show 200lb fight. But as long as noone strips you yu might as well defend all 4 belts against names. Just being able to bill somthing as undisputed no doubt adds value to the fight.
I think canelo butchers charlo. Might be a close 3 rounds early but charlo is pretty simple, once canelo has his timing could be some brutal shots, especialy the body. That said, 168 charlo could be a solid guy i guess.
Its a fight worth seeing, i just dont really want people who wait for canelo to be rewarded. still stand by my Idea of team canelo calling elliminators. Just say: Charlo vs andrade at 168 , 60-40, Winner vs me with a 10 million garentee, if the fight isnt made ya blacklisted.

Jermall may be better than his brother or may be he isn’t. He certainly hasn’t fought the same calibre of opponents as Jermell.
How well do the Charlo’s really sell anyway?

Put it this way, Benavidez and Charlo are both PBC fighters.apollo creed wrote: ↑10 Jan 2022, 14:57True but it is what it is. Charlo could've challenged Benavidez at 168 and walk the talk.![]()
Charlo is more accomplished and more commercially popular than Benavidez.
The PBC want to retain Canelo’s services and continue broadcasting his PPV’s via Showtime.
So the PBC decided to try to match Canelo against Charlo rather than Benavidez.
Later on in the year, after the Charlo bout, the PBC could always try to promote and broadcast another Canelo PPV event, either against Benavidez or someone else from their own stable.
If the PBC matched Charlo and Benavidez against each other right now, they’d only be able to stage one Canelo PPV event against the eventual winner of that bout.
The PBC refrained from doing this, because having two PPV-worthy opponents for Canelo in their stable (i.e. Charlo and Benavidez) is better than only having one.
Don’t you agree?

Also I'd like to see Benavidez moving up at 175 and challenge Zurdo Ramirez, Callum, Bivol, Beterbiev or Joe Smith. Staying at 168 and fight stiffs ain't nothing but staying safe and wait for Canelo.

He lacks a fanbase amongst mainstream casuals.
He’s also lacking a signature victory on his resume.
In fact, his resume is blemished, due to his own lack of discipline (i.e. being stripped of his WBC title twice due to consuming recreational drugs, as well as failing to make weight).
I agree with your opinion about him needing to earn his shot at Canelo, which would make the PPV easier for the PBC to promote.
However, even though I’d like to see Benavidez facing the names you’ve listed, none of them are aligned with the PBC, which means those fights probably won’t happen.
At this point in time, Canelo doesn’t have anything to gain (in terms of legacy) facing Benavidez.
If he was as commercially popular as Charlo, he’d at least provide a decent payday opportunity, but I’m not even sure he does that.
Canelo might even be ridiculed for facing an unaccomplished fighter like Benavidez, especially when he has bigger fish to fry (i.e. Beterbiev & Bivol).
Put it this way, Tyson Fury would be mocked for fighting Filip Hrgovic instead of Oleksandr Usyk. The same thought process applies with Canelo versus Benavidez.
