Chris Eubank Jr vs Liam Williams: British Boxing Board of Control crank up pressure on Welsh government to decide on date
Proposed date of February 5, live on Sky Sports, is still unconfirmed due to Covid restrictions; British Boxing Board of Control has said: "If this is not the position, the promoter Mr. Ben Shalom will have to look for another venue in England."
The Welsh government has come under pressure to finalise the date for Chris Eubank Jr vs Liam Williams by the British Boxing Board of Control.
It is hoped the all-British grudge match will go ahead on Saturday February 5 in Cardiff, live on Sky Sports, but the date remains unconfirmed due to Covid restrictions imposed by the Welsh government.
Eubank Jr and Williams were previously set to fight a week earlier, on Saturday January 29, but the British Boxing Board of Control suspended all boxing throughout the month to allow doctors and medical experts to prioritise their work with NHS during the pandemic.
The BBBofC has now written to the Welsh parliament: "It is hoped that the Motorpoint Arena, Cardiff, will host a boxing tournament on Saturday February 5, 2022.
"This is a major event for boxing in Wales and needs supporters in attendance to make it viable.
"The British Boxing Board of Control fully understand the difficulties the Welsh government have in relation to the current situation in regard to the pandemic, however, the uncertainty in relation to an event taking place on February 5, 2022, is making the situation difficult in organising a major sporting event in Wales.
"As you are aware, the history of boxing in Wales is steeped with great Welsh boxers and due to the present circumstances over the last two years has resulted in major boxing events not being able to take place.
"Although we fully understand the Welsh government's position, it is hopeful that you may be able to clarify whether a boxing event can take place at the Motorpoint Arena with a full crowd on February 5, 2022. If this is not the position, the promoter Mr. Ben Shalom will have to look for another venue in England."
Cardiff is Williams' home city and he plans to welcome Eubank Jr with a hostile atmosphere for their middleweight clash.
"Respect is definitely not a word I would use for my feelings towards Liam," Eubank Jr previously said.
"This is a grudge match, a genuine domestic rivalry. It is personal. He has made it personal."
Williams has hit back: "We're not each other's type of person.
"I don't have much respect for him personally. I don't like the way he goes about his business.
"He's not my type of guy. He's not somebody I'd want to be friends with.
"I've said a couple of things to him online. Things I stand by."

Press Release
Claressa Shields, Caroline Dubois, Steve ‘USSR’ Robinson and English Welterweight Title Bout Confirmed For Historic Night In Cardiff As BOXXER Kicks Off 2022 In Welsh Capital
Cardiff, Wales – January 14, 2022 – Following today’s announcement by the Welsh Government that indoor sports events can resume in Wales, BOXXER is pleased to announce that the long-awaited showdown between bitter rivals Chris Eubank Jr. (31-2, 23 KO’s) and Liam Williams (23-3-1, 18 KO’s), presented in association with Wasserman Boxing, will take place at the Motorpoint Arena Cardiff on Saturday, February 5, live and exclusively on Sky Sports.
An electrifying undercard packed with world champions, all-action contests and champions of the future will set the stage for a clash which will bring a years-long war of words to an explosive conclusion and determine which boxer is the UK’s #1 middleweight.
Two-time Olympic gold medallist Claressa ‘GWOAT’ Shields (11-0, 2 KO’s) makes her UK debut as chief support to the main event, defending her WBA, WBC and IBF World Middleweight Championships against undefeated WBF World Middleweight Champion Ema Kozin (21-0-1, 11 KO’s).
Following a stellar amateur career in which she became World Youth Olympic Champion and won the European Youth Championships an astonishing four times, 21-year-old prospect Caroline Dubois follows her older brother Daniel into the professional ranks and aims to make her mark.
Having won his title by way of a stunning sixth-round body-shot stoppage of Darren Tetley last year, English Welterweight Champion Samuel ‘True Sensation’ Antwi (13-1, 6 KO’s) travels from Stockwell, London to make the first defence of his belt. An all-action war is expected when he faces Wolverhampton’s Conah Walker (10-0-1, 3 KO’s), who demolished Jack Ewbank in the first round of their contest in October.
Proud Welshman and former British and Commonwealth Champion Chris ‘Rock ‘n’ Rolla’ Jenkins (22-4-3, 8 KO’s) heads to his nation’s capital from his hometown of Garnant as he faces former Unified World Champion Julius Indongo (23-4, 12 KO’s) in a massive welterweight showdown. Indongo’s last visit on these shores in April 2017 saw him relieve Ricky Burns of his world titles at his Glasgow fortress and will hold no fear facing Jenkins in front of his fierce fan base.
Fast-rising Welsh hot shot Rhys Edwards (11-0, 4 KO’s) looks to maintain his undefeated run and make his countrymen proud in an eight-round super-bantamweight contest against experienced Russian Ruslan Berchuk (13-13, 4 KO’s). The 21-year-old, from Penygraig, is trained by former world champion Gary Lockett and has been heralded as one of the best up-and-coming prospects in the sport.
Giant Geordie Steve Robinson, last seen dismantling Reece Barlow in just 82 seconds back in November, heads down from Newcastle on a mission to add another stunning knockout to his highlight reel. With three jaw-dropping finishes in his four-fight career, the power-punching heavyweight has no intention of going the distance with Shane Gill.
Harlem Eubank (12-0, 4 KO’s), cousin of headline draw Chris Eubank Jr and also part of the Wasserman Boxing stable, adds to the family business on fight night. The Sussex Super Lightweight returns to action following an impressive stoppage win over Nika Nakashidze in Riga, Latvia on October 16 and will be looking to extend his unbeaten record in Cardiff.

Chris Jenkins V Julius Indongo is a curveball. Probably quite well matched?

Wallin Vs Soko now on this card. Weird one but could be entertaining. Despite Soko being a banana skin for most, you'd think Wallin might be too good to be in too any trouble here.

Re: Chris Eubank Jr. vs. Liam Williams | Sky Sports - 5 February 2022
Really strange one. Should be a complete mismatch given Sol Dacres won every round comfortably against Soko 6 months or so back whilst Wallin is supposedly around the top 10 in the world.

Really good card now, especially after such a dry January.

Couldn’t they give Wallin someone with a winning record.maverick23 wrote: ↑30 Jan 2022, 13:46Really strange one. Should be a complete mismatch given Sol Dacres won every round comfortably against Soko 6 months or so back whilst Wallin is supposedly around the top 10 in the world.

It’s a really strange one. Wallin won’t be cheap and it won’t add viewers to the show (in the U.K. at least). I thought they may looking to keep him sweet to then let one of the U.K. heavies have a fight against him. They’ve only really got Hughie and is there anyone else it would make sense to move to Sky to fight Wallin?Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑30 Jan 2022, 14:02Couldn’t they give Wallin someone with a winning record.maverick23 wrote: ↑30 Jan 2022, 13:46Really strange one. Looks virtually a sellout, I had a quick look yesterday, just a few odd seats scattered around. I didn’t get a ticket for this in the end as still half expecting it to get cancelled due to Covid or a pullout.

I don’t mind it too much. 2 competitive fights on paper in the Jenkins/Indongo fight and the Antwi fight. Not fussed by the Shields fight or the Dubois debut (against a really poor opponent).

Heck, I've fast forwarded through worse this year already
But the main event is, for me at least, the best fight (on paper) to start the year and man have they made us wait...
Let's get it oooon!

Probably start the RBR on here and then chip off.. Be back home for 9pm, in time for main event.
I take it Shields is co-main.

WTF Ruthless! It’s the first show of the year, a cracking main event and you’ve got plans?! Someone may have to start a RBR separately in protest mate!Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑31 Jan 2022, 13:27I'm gonna be a little busy on Saturday..KiwiRider wrote: ↑31 Jan 2022, 13:24I'm "OK" with the undercard.maverick23 wrote: ↑31 Jan 2022, 09:18
