MW Tourney
MW Tourney
As much as I enjoy the tournament threads (often more so for the debate than the actual result) they are always a little underwhelming in that at the very beginning it's fair to say that Ali v Louis will be the final fight... With this in mind I have tried to put together a group of 160'ers all from a similar era all within a similar ability level (well as best as I could). Obviously please consider them on their abilities at MW.
The draw is not seeded in any way and all match ups are random. Of course some of these guys really did fight one another and may do so again in this tourney...
starting with 16 fighters fighting 10 rounders, to 8 fighting 12 rounders, all the rest will then be 15...
All fights are drawn at random...
Here we go predictions for 10 rounds each...
Gerald McClellan v Thomas Hearns
Nigel Benn v Herol Graham
Steve Collins v Sumbu Kalambay
James Toney v Julian Jackson
Mustafa Hamsho v Michael Nunn
Mike McCallum v Iran Barkley
Chris Eubank v John Mugabi
Bernard Hopkins v Ray Leonard

Good thread Ezzard. Nice to see someone interested in discussing fighters other than heavyweights.
1st Round
Gerald McClellan KO 3 Thomas Hearns.
McClellan's an inch taller with a better chin and punch. Hearns lands some tremendous shots while it lasts, but McClellan is too strong.
Herol Graham WUD 10 Nigel Benn
Try as he may, Benn can't cut off the ring and loses 6-3-1
Sumbu Kalambay WUD 10 Steve Collins
Kalambay is a little too slick and wins 7-3
Julian Jackson WUD 10 James Toney
Jackson drops Toney and goes on to win a close decision 5-4-1
Michael Nunn TKO 5 Mustafa Hamsho
Nunn possesses every conceivable advantage and dissects the smaller man.
Mike McCallum WUD 10 Iran Barkley
The Body Snatcher wins a close war in the trenches 6-4
John Mugabi WUD 10 Chris Eubank
Eubank is dropped and hurt early, but he survives and finishes the stronger of the two. It isn't enough though, and it's 5-4-1 Mugabi at the end.
Sugar Ray Leonard WSD 10 Bernard Hopkins
Leonard wins close chess match.

Thanks for the input. pleased to see that there are very diferent opinions...
Hearns WUD 10 McClellan
Hearns has enough to keep him off and knows that he has to be cautious to win the fight.
Graham WSD 10 Benn
Graham seems to be coasting but gets tagged late and dropped. He holds on for a controversial split decision.
Kalambay WUD 10 Collins
Collins gains momentun too late to turn it around.
Toney WUD 10 Jackson
Toney gets wobbled in the first few rounds but slowly takes it to Jackson and wins a close but clear decision.
Nunn WUD 10 Hamsho
A bad match up for Hamsho who needs 4-5 rounds before he can catch up with Nunn. He makes it hard late on but loses a lopsided decision.
McCallum WUD 10 Barkley
McCallum soundly beats barkley on points and scored a KD in the 9th.
Eubank WSD 10 Mugabi
Changed my mind about this one 3 or 4 times. I like Mugabi to build up an early lead but Eubanks iron jaw will keep him in the fight. Eubank is the stronger man and will start to make up ground as the fight wears on and Mugabi becomes less dangerous. This would be an unpopular decision.
Leonard WSD 10 Hopkins
Hopkins gives Leonard too much respect and can't quite make up the ground. He wobbles Leonard in 10th but cannot finish him.
Hearns WUD 10 McClellan
Hearns has enough to keep him off and knows that he has to be cautious to win the fight.
Graham WSD 10 Benn

Herol Graham vs James Toney
I love this matchup, some people think Toney is an all time great, but in this fight I truly believe the speedy southpaw Graham would be a nightmare for him. Graham gives Toney a boxing lesson and wins 8-3-1
Herol Graham WUD 12 James Toney
Thomas Hearns vs Sumbu Kalambay
When I look at Kalambay's records and remember some of his fights, I feel like I could make an argument for him pulling the upset, but I'll go with my gut feeling instead
Thomas Hearns WKO 4 Sumbu Kalambay
Sugar Ray Leonard vs Chris Eubank
Eubank's chin saves him from a knockout, but Leonard totally dominates and wins 9-2-1 and adds a late knockdown
Sugar Ray Leonard WUD 12 Chris Eubank
Mike McCallum vs Michael Nunn
Nunn opens a big early lead by outboxing his shorter opponent, the Bodysnatcher closes the gap in the later rounds, but it's still Nunn by 7-4-1 at the finish
Michael Nunn WUD 12 Mike McCallum

Toney SD Graham..Toney struggles with Graham's movementand strength, but herol takes too many risks and leaves enough openings for Toney to edge rounds with his heavier counters.
Hearns UD kalambay...light hitting defensive masters are made to order for Hearns.
Leonard UD Eubank...Chris' inability to fight coming forward costs him and he loses a wide decision, although never hurt in the slightest.
Nunn vs McCallum...Mike was steadier and more consistent, but against Nunn at his best he suffers a kalambay-esque boxing lesson from the much faster, more mobile Nunn.

Graham SD Toney- I see a fight thats close but the judges reward Graham for using flashier punches.
Hearns TKO8 Sumbu Kambalay - Hearns uses his accurate jab and boxer-puncher mentality to beat Kambalay
Leonard UD Eubank - cakewalk for Leonard. He'll even use some of his showsmanship during the later rounds against a fustrated Eubank.
Nunn UD McCallum - semiclose fight Nunn outboxes McCallum beginning and the end of the fight. McCallum gains steam in the middle of the fight, but Nunn closes it up at the end.
Interesting tourney instead of the usual greatest of all time usual tourneys

Agree with all these picks exept for Leonard Hopkins on which I'll take Leonard by very very close split decision.IrishRufusMurphy wrote:Gerald McClellan v Thomas Hearns

Very tricky one to pick I think maybe Graham fustrates Toney to some extent but Toney lands the more hurtful shots earning him a close decision.
Sumbu Kalambay v Thomas Hearns
Kalambay uses his good boxing skills and manages to avoid getting trapped on the ropes but the hitman is all over him from the first bell and stops him in the third.
Ray Leonard v Chris Eubank
Leonard wins comfortable but boring decision
Mike McCallum v Michael Nunn
Nunn starts well but McCallum grinds him down to stop him late, while behind on the cards

Herol Graham v James Toney
James Toney UD
Toney just overall better lands the right hand consistently and counterpunches the shit out of Graham.
Sumbu Kalambay v Thomas Hearns - Hearns
Hearns TKO9
Kalambay very slick but Hearns eventually catches up to him and stops him
Ray Leonard v Chris Eubank
Leonard UD
Leonard just too fast overwhelms him with speed outboxes him.
Mike McCallum v Michael Nunn
McCallum TKO 10
Nunn outboxes McCallum for most of the match while Mccallum slows him with an accumulation of body punches and Nunn tires out and gets stopped.

Toney WKO 12 Graham
Toney, behind on points, walks through the slicks Graham's shots late on and scores the KO.
Hearns WUD 12 Kalambay
Hearns figths aggressively early on. Hurts Kalambay but can't put him away. Kalambay gets abck into it and worries Hearns who jabs his way through to the end winning comfortably.
Leonard WUD 12 Eubank
Eubank's alck of workrate hurts him here and he just doesn't get his punches off early enough. he finally comes out of his shell towards the end of the fight prompting us all to wonder why he didn't start like that, but it's too little too late.
Nunn WSD 12 McCallum
hardest of all to pick. Mccallum is the better fighter. He looks like the winner as Nunn looks busted up at the end but Nunn, who looks to be on the verge of getting stopped, holds on for a split decision. If it were 15 McCallum would have won.

Michael Nunn vs Thomas Hearns
Got a feeling I'm going to be in the minority here, but I strongly believe Nunn is all wrong for Hearns. For the only time in his career (I think) the Hitman has to fight an opponent who's a Southpaw with a height and reach advantage, and who hits as hard. Try as he may Hearns can't dictate the pace. Nunn lands the first big shots and it's a surprisingly short fight fight. Michael Nunn KO 4 Thomas Hearns
Sugar Ray Leonard vs James Toney
Leonard's stick and move style plus handspeed is too much for Toney to counterpunch effectively against, but Lights Out remains stationary for 15. At the end though it's Leonard 10-4-1
Sugar Ray Leonard WUD 15 James Toney
