Joe Smith Jr. is being protected to avoid risking the Canelo payday.

The result of his bout against Geffard was inevitable, to the point the outcome of this bout was annoyingly predictable.
Specifically, what evidence do you have to support your allegation that “Joe Smith Jr. is being protected to avoid risking the Canelo payday?”

Yeah, he said after he wanted "big fights, unification" and then when asked about Canelo, he seemed surprised and like "yes please".

I get the impression that he feels Canelo wants no part of him and it won't happen, but - of course - he'd love it if he did.

And of course I know Canelo is a lot better than JSJ, but the size difference would be significant.

Joe Smith Jr. wants Beterbiev.

Case closed.

Canelo v Smith Jr. would be a massive PPV.

kinda weird to go after joe for being protected. he fought a string of matches as underdog - fonfara, hopkins, barrera, bivol, hart, alvarez- then fought the wbo mandated fight for the vacant title. then scheduled first defense against a guy who put bert on his but, but only 8 days to find a replacement.

now if he continues to fight geff level opponents then ya, but so far no. its not like canelo fighting avni yildrim makes nelo protected either

He was underdog against Fonfara, Hopkins, Hart and Alvarez. Does not seems protected to me. Also i think he would face Beterbiev. :box:
Smith Jr. wasn’t being protected previously.

But now that Canelo is looming in the horizon, his handlers won’t attempt to match him against anyone risky.

For the record, Smith Jr. opposition in the pro ranks is much better than Beterbiev’s, but that doesn’t mean he won’t be protected going forward, because of the prospect of receiving a lottery jackpot sized Canelo payday.
Beterbiev and Bivol too, as the smw champions did so.

I hope Canelo is gonna fight some guys at 168 and let the 175 champions stew in their own juice. :OhYes:

This was a rare fight for Joe where he was the odds on favourite.
I'm quite satisfied with his career, no knockovers apart from this one, and it was only circumstance that caused it.

I never mind a fighter taking a breather fight after a run like Joe has had. EO is being a jerkoff about this.

About this ?! :o

JSJ resume is about as good as it can be - and it woulda been even better if Johnson hadn't "gotten" Covid.

When deciding weather or not joe smith is taking easy fights to wait for canelo, the name Steve Geffard shouldent even be mentioned. for this date He booked in to fight Callum Johnson, thats the name you should be talking about. That would be a weakish defence, but perfectly acceptable. .

Think that's a bit unfair to Callum Johnson.
Got a great KO record and (a very respectable) only one loss.

for a first defence, cal johnson was perfectly decent. a limited guy in defense but has some real power, as beterbiev knows

joe fought lots of good opponents over the last few years, his matchmaking puts these other guys waiting for canelo to shame

You wouldent consider callum johnson a weakish defence? Only decent name he has been in with stopped him in 4, his last fight he got a MD win that probably should of been a close points loss vs a guy probably around 100th in the world... Callum johnson is as i said perfectly acceptable, but he isnt top class.

3 of joe's last 5 fights he's been underdog

then his second to last fight was vs a guy who was ranked as a top 10 cruiser shortly before

then a late replacement for a guy who is limited but dropped bert and has firepower

very much unlike guys taking continual huge favourite fights as they hold out for el cinnamon. even when smith was fave for vlasov and johnson, it was like 3-1 and not these massive mismatches like caleb plant vs mike lee (20-1), charlo vs montiel (40-1), bert vs denies (50-1), bivol vs castillo (35-1), andrade vs quigley (15-1, not sure why so close btw), ggg-rollercoster (60-1) etc

Nah Smith’s not being protected. Come on now. This was not even the fight that was meant to be. Geff was literally a last minute replacement plucked out to save the card in general. Super Nova and his wily mascot don’t have the chops to carry a main event. He was supposed to face Callum Johnson who pulverized a man in his last fight and was the former 168lb Ring Magazine champ. Not much protecting going on.
That was Callum Smith mate

Johnson was the one who dropped Beterbiev
Wait, you mean it wasn’t Liam “Beefy” Johnson?
Thanks. This is what I get for posting before I’ve had coffee. For some reason though I thought JSJ was fighting Callum Smith.. ugh..

That’d be a nice (unprotected) fight though. :OhYes:

This Johnson chap seems like a pretty mean fella. Not exactly the protective material either.

Far out, I can't believe Callum Johnson is considered a 'weak defence' :maybe:
The guy has serious equaliser power. He is motivated and tough, and has the desire to be a world champion, and not just show up for a payday.
The sort of guy Ramirez hides under his mummy's petticoats for.

Steve Geffrard was unrated by the WBO in their November 2021 rankings.

The last time he fought was March 2021, but he suddenly entered the WBO’s top-fifteen ratings during the month of December.

Shortly afterwards, Top Rank announced the Joe Smith Jr. vs. Steve Geffrard fight.

Steve Geffrard possesses the resume of a similar calibre to Mark De Mori.

Joe Smith Jr’s original opponent, Callum Johnson is 36 years of age, appears to be a shot fighter and was very fortunate to be awarded a hometown decision victory during his most recent outing against a very mediocre opponent boasting an extraordinarily padded record.

Do you require more evidence than that?

And if you wholeheartedly believe you’re an expert on the sport of boxing, then why did you make me submit a rather lengthy post stating the obvious?

If you want to be an abusive çûñt towards me, then send me a private message detailing your personal hatred, but don’t contaminate the forum with idiotic drivel that portrays yourself as knowing nothing whatsoever about the sport of boxing!

I hate repeating myself… Joe Smith Jr. fought everybody prior to the likelihood of Canelo competing at 175lbs.

He has a much deeper resume than Artur Beterbiev.

But now that he is capable of earning roughly $10m to face Canelo, then this means his handlers aren’t going to consider risky fights for $500K.

I don’t know what else to say… I’ve detailed the facts and no can can possibly pretend that what I wrote in my previous post was factually incorrect?

For the record, I like Joe Smith Jr. And I have a proven track-record singing his praises, but do you really feel that I should actively refrain from stating the obvious because real-world truths might offend someone?

That adds up to 0 relevant evidence.

You conveniently leave out that Covid led to the matchup against Geffrard. That has absolutely 0 to do with avoiding risk.

Fighting a hard punching contender like Johnson, whose only loss is v Beterbiev, is not evidence of avoiding risk to await a Canelo fight. It is evidence of the opposite. But, even that match was the result of Covid interference.

Now, it is well documented that Joe Smith Jr. is calling out Beterbiev.

Honestly, Vapid-One, wtf are you talking about?

Yep, you and me both. From when he wasted Fonfara, if I remember rightly.
But EO, I don't get the bother with both the late replacement, or Johnson.
Johnson was an "OK" mandatory, we have seen a lot worse, and for a last minute replacement Geffard was better than nothing - heck he didn't get blown out in one round like Fonfara.
I'm giving Jo Smith Jr a pass, based on recent resume, and you should too :salut:
