Michael / Danny Carbajal Family Feud

Post by JamesPhilips »

Wow sounds like some genuine beef for once. Anyone know what happened? Didn’t Danny once train Michael?
Michael Carbajal releases this statement to clear any misconceptions that suggest or imply his support or endorsement of Keenan Carbajal. Any assumptions that he is rooting for Keenan Carbajal are completely unfounded. To the contrary, Michael Carbajal will be rooting for Leo Santa Cruz to win and expects an early knockout victory.

The animosity between Michael Carbajal and the Keenan Danny Josephine Carbajal faction absolutely cannot be understated. There is no merit to any claim that Michael has any involvement, association, or affiliation with Keenan, his fight career, or any part of his life.

Further, Michael is not involved with Keenan’s trainer, Danny Carbajal (Michael’s estranged brother), or Keenan’s mother, Josephine Carbajal (Michael’s estranged niece), in any way, shape, or form. Michael Carbajal has never had and will never have any association with Keenan or any member of his team known as “Familia Carbajal”, which has misrepresented and violated the actual Carbajal Family.

Michael was trained by Danny and the two fell out over money, inevitably, but Danny came across as a bit of a blowhard to me. Michael was outscored by the brilliant Bulgarian Ivailo Hristov in the Olympic light-flyweight final in Korea in 1988 and Danny was always claiming that Michael was robbed when he simply wasn't.

Thanks bennie. Always about the money hey. Many cases like this in boxing.

Michael Carbajal was a cracking little fighter with very heavy hands at 8 stone.

Bernie's right, Michael lost in the final fair & square to Hristov, who was a wonderful boxer so absolutely no shame in that whatsoever.

The judges saved an almighty clanger of a decision for the Light middleweight final and royally shafted Roy Jones jnr

Michael had the ability to find a big punch when he really needed it and I loved his throwback fight with Kwang Sun Kim at the old Caesars Palace in Las Vegas in 1993. The arena hosted some of the best fights of the 1970s in Foreman-Lyle, Holmes-Norton and Leonard-Benitez, and Carbajal pulled out a brilliant left hook to finish the rugged Korean in round seven.

Wasn't he in the first million dollar flyweight fight for his return against Humberto Gomez?

Has a familiar ring to it and great to see entertaining boxers at the lighter end of the weight scales getting great money.

I remember Carbajal's pro debut and his opponent Will Grigsby. Carbajal was too good & hard hitting, but I was struck at how good Grigsby was for a one fight novice.

After that loss Grigsby disappeared for 5 years then returned with a good winning streak before winning an IBF world title and losing it to arguably Mexico's greatest boxer, Ricardo Lopez (although you'd never guess this considering how little Lopez gets mentioned).

As for Carbajal I'd forgotten he closed out with a staggering 53 fights and 49 wins, figuring in 18 world title fights, plus retiring as a WBO world champion.

First fight. It was big news at the time. Great fight and finish too. Tepid rematch and forgettable third fight.

I thought his last fight was a turn the clock back KO over arce wasn’t it?

Gonzalez had that fight with saman sajatorang (sp) where he looked to be winning like he was against carbajal but got flattened with a huge shot. Saman was KO’d in two by Lopez a few fights before and wasn’t thought of as a threat.

You’re right. First million dollar purse under feather for the rematch. First million dollar “fight” in the first match and first lower weight fight on ppv and headlining. It was a huge deal

I don't remember exactly, just it was a huge deal! It rings a bell from an old ring magazine front cover

I remember that, he had the ability to outbox his man on the outside and realised he could win it easy after going life and death

I love it when aggressive fighters prove they can box. Roberto Duran did that in the rubber match with Esteban De Jesus in Las Vegas in 1978 and Aaron Pryor against Alexis Arguello in their classic first meeting in Miami in November 1982. Tony Sibson totally outboxed Frenchman Louis Acaries in a tricky European title defence in Paris in 1983.
