Press Release

Things ended on a heated note in London today as the UK press tour for February’s showdown between undisputed super-lightweight champion Josh Taylor (18-0, 13 KO’s) and challenger Jack Catterall (26-0, 13 KO’s) concluded in the nation’s capital.

Taylor, generally not given to outbursts, was provoked when Catterall told press conference host Adam Smith, Sky Sports Head of Boxing Development, that he saw “several ways” to beat Taylor in Glasgow in February.

“How? In what way? How are you going to do it?” snapped Taylor.

“There’s several ways,” replied Catterall.

“Go on, how? Tell me one,” said Taylor, fixing Catterall with a stare.

“By turning up and being Jack Catterall. I’ll get in there and punch your head in!” said the challenger.

“You’ll punch my head in? Easy as that!?” scoffed Taylor.

“Well it won’t be easy, but I’m going to,” shrugged Catterall.

Taylor shook his head and laughed. “Go back to bed.”

The two fighters have long been on friendly terms and Catterall actually traveled out to Las Vegas to support Taylor in his title unification fight against Jose Ramirez earlier this year. But all cordial relations are being put aside while the two are on collision course for their collision on Saturday, February 26 at the OVO Hydro Arena, Glasgow.

JOSH TAYLOR QUOTES

On facing a fighter he’s on friendly terms with:
It’s easy for me to flick that switch. If you said go and fight him right now, I’d do it. Easy as pie for me to switch the mentality into fight mode.

I have a lot of time for Jack, he’s a good person and a good fighter, but it’s time to put the friendship and the respect aside until after the fight. May the best man win. I just believe on the night he’s not getting anywhere near me. “

On the possibility of stopping the undefeated Catterall:

I definitely believe I can get Jack out of there, 100%, especially if I hit him clean. I see a lot of holes in his game and his defence. If the opportunity is there I will be taking it – you don’t get paid overtime in this game. If the opportunity is there, he will be hitting the canvas. I can’t see any ways he can win this fight.

On the possibility of Catterall taking the belts:

I am laser-focused on this fight and he’s not getting anywhere near these belts. He can have a hold of them today if he likes, but that’s as close he’s getting.

JACK CATTERALL QUOTES

On how he will win:

There’s several ways I can win this fight. [I’ll win] by turning up and being Jack Catterall. I’ll get in there and punch [his] head in.

On what the fight means to him:

It’s going to mean everything to me. Not just this 12-week fight camp but the last couple of years of training and discipline, it’s all going to come together to cause an upset. I am convinced I will win.

On facing a fighter he’s on friendly terms with:

Respect is there as Josh said but as fighters we have to switch that on. It’s a business and we’re here to bring the heat in January.

The highly-anticipated clash between undisputed super-lightweight champion Taylor and mandatory challenger Catterall will take place Saturday, February 26 at the OVO Hydro Arena, Glasgow.

Taylor – who holds the WBA, IBF, WBC and WBO world titles – is one of only five boxers in history have ever managed to achieve undisputed world champion status in the “four-belt” era – the other four being all-time greats Bernard Hopkins, Jermaine Taylor, Terence Crawford and Oleksandr Usyk.

Taylor is the first British fighter ever to do so, which makes his meeting with mandatory challenger Catterall in February a landmark moment in British and Scottish sporting history and a deeply significant occasion for proud Scotsman Taylor.

JOSH TAYLOR

“Since I was 15 years old I dreamed of being a world champion. I’ve surpassed those dreams by becoming the UK’s first undisputed champion and the full belt holder. So it’s a massive, massive moment for me to defend these belts in Scotland against Jack Catterall.

over two years and Glasgow Hydro Arena is a cauldron, the fans make a hell of an atmosphere so I’m really looking forward to that.

“Jack Catterall is a very good fighter. He’s 26-0, he’s been knocking on the door for world titles for a couple of years now. He stepped aside to let me fight Ramirez but it wasn’t from the goodness of his heart – there was method in the madness. By stepping aside, he’s able to now get a crack at all the titles. I’ve worked my backside off to achieve these goals, beat champion after champion. This guy is getting a shot at the lottery here. It’s my job to make sure that he doesn’t get anywhere these belts – and he won’t.”

BEN DAVIDSON (Trainer, Taylor)

“Preparation preparation is key and I believe that if Josh prepares 100% and gets in the ring 100% on the night then this is a potential showcase for him, which is exactly what he’s looking for in his homecoming.

“But like any achievement you have to work for it, you have to earn it and give 100% focus and give Jack the respect he deserves. If Josh gets it right on the night it’s a potential showcase performance that propels his profile to the level it deserves to be.”

JACK CATTERALL

“To win this fight will mean the world to me and to come to Scotland and do it in front of Josh’s own fans I think adds energy to the fight, so I’m just excited to get up there and take all these belts back down to England. Josh has seen all the styles there is, but he’s never fought Jack Catterall. I believe on my day I can beat Josh.”

NIGEL TRAVIS (Trainer, Catterall)

“Jack’s very special. We know that the battle ahead is going to be tough but I feel that Jack has the style to undo Josh Taylor. Obviously he’s got a fantastic achievement [in becoming unified champion]. It’s our job to undo that and we believe we can do it. I don’t think we’ve seen the best of Jack Catterall yet.”

Press Release | Undercard

Two-time Cuban Olympic gold medalist Robeisy “El Tren” Ramirez will cross the pond to battle Irish veteran Eric Donovan in a 10-round featherweight battle Saturday, Feb. 26 at OVO Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland.

Ramirez-Donovan highlights a loaded undercard before the highly anticipated junior welterweight showdown between Scottish undisputed world champion Josh “The Tartan Tornado” Taylor and undefeated WBO No. 1 contender Jack “El Gato” Catterall.

The entire Taylor-Catterall card will stream live and exclusively in the United States on ESPN+.

“Ever since that shocking loss in his professional debut, Robeisy Ramirez has shown why he was one of the top fighters from the 2016 Rio Olympics,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum. “Robeisy fought all over the world during his amateur career, and we are thrilled that he will be able to showcase his skills for the Scottish fans.”

Ramirez (8-1, 4 KOs) is no stranger to fighting on British soil. At the 2012 London Olympics, he stunned the flyweight field as a 16-1 underdog to win gold. Ramirez won a second gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics and defected from Cuba in July 2018.

Following a split decision defeat to Adan Gonzales in his August 2019 pro debut, Ramirez has won eight straight fights, including a shutout decision win over Gonzales in their 2020 rematch. Ramirez shined on the Tyson Fury-Deontay Wilder III undercard last October, dominating the previously unbeaten Orlando Gonzalez over 10 rounds. Donovan (14-1, 8 KOs), a one-time Irish amateur star from Athy, has won two fights since an August 2020 TKO loss to Zelfa Barrett.

Ramirez said, “Ever since I won my first Olympic gold medal in London, I’ve wanted to fight again in this part of the world. Scottish fans are incredibly passionate, and I can’t wait to put on a great show for them in front of a sold-out arena. My opponent is a tough Irishman, and I will be at my very best to come out victorious.”

In other undercard action on ESPN+:

• Nick ‘The Glasgow Warrior’ Campbell (4-0, 4 KO’s) and Jay ‘The Ghost’ McFarlane (12-5, 5 KO’s) will collide in a highly anticipated showdown for the vacant Scottish heavyweight title.

• A pair of Top Rank-signed prospects will make their respective professional debuts in six-rounders. Featherweight Kurt Walker won bronze at the 2017 European Championships, silver at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, and gold at the 2018 EU Championships and 2019 European Games. Walker, who represented Ireland last summer at the Tokyo Olympics, lost to Top Rank stablemate Duke Ragan in a hotly contested quarterfinal bout. Junior middleweight Kieran Molloy, from Galway Ireland, won 11 national amateur titles and earned a bronze medal at the 2018 EU Championships in Valladolid, Spain.

• Top Rank-signed welterweight sensation Paddy “Real Deal” Donovan (7-0, 5 KOs), from Limerick, Ireland, returns to action in a six-rounder. Donovan is coming off last August’s first-round knockout over Jose Luis Castillo.

•BOXXER Series junior welterweight winner Cori Gibbs (16-0, 3 KOs) will begin his new promotional deal in an eight-rounder.

• Rising female star Ebonie Jones (1-0) has her second pro fight against Effy Kathopouli over six rounds at junior featherweight. Portsmouth’s Jones, a former Team GB standout amateur and HGV driver in the British Army, made her pro debut last October with a points win over Vaida Masiokaite.

• Edinburgh cruiserweight ace Scott Forrest sets out on his professional journey when he makes his pro debut in a six-round contest. Born in South Africa, Forrest relocated to Forth, Scotland, as a five-year-old. He competed at the 2014 and 2018 Commonwealth Games and has sparred former heavyweight champion

Josh Taylor calls himself a step up in class for Jack Catterall, expects to pull through once again

Undisputed junior welterweight champion Josh Taylor is set for his next outing on Feb. 26th when he’ll take on Jack Catterall in a 140-pound title defense. To this point things have been nothing short of respectful between Taylor and Catterall leading into the bout, but Taylor fully expects for tensions to rise as their fight date nears, ensuring that he’ll ‘needle’ Catterall when the time comes.

As for the fight itself, Taylor is as confident as ever. He tells Sky Sports that he has nothing against Catterall, but that he’s simply the better fighter who will come out on top once the opening bell rings.

“He’s a good fighter. He just isn’t as good as I am,” Taylor said. “It is a step up in class for him because he hasn’t boxed at the level that I have. He is a talented fighter but he hasn’t got what it takes to beat me.”

Catterall does, however, believe that he’s got what it takes to topple the Scottish champion, insisting that following the instructions to his game plan will pay dividends if he also leverages his career experience along with it. That being said, Catterall is a massive betting underdog to this point, with most expecting Taylor to take care of business on the night. But expectations aside, Taylor still needs to deliver.

Press Release | Robeisy Ramirez vs. Donovan added

Ramirez-Eric Donovan featherweight tilt will serve as co-feature to the Josh Taylor-Jack Catterall undisputed junior welterweight title fight at OVO Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland

Cuban southpaw sensation Robeisy “El Tren” Ramirez won a pair of Olympic gold medals for his homeland. He is now determined to add some professional hardware to his collection.
Ramirez (8-1, 4 KOs) will cross the pond to battle Irish veteran Eric Donovan (14-1, 8 KOs) in a 10-round featherweight battle Saturday, Feb. 26, at OVO Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland.

Ramirez-Donovan will serve as the co-feature to the highly anticipated junior welterweight showdown between Scottish undisputed world champion Josh “The Tartan Tornado” Taylor and undefeated WBO No. 1 contender Jack “El Gato” Catterall.

Taylor-Catterall, Ramirez-Donovan, and additional undercard bouts will stream live and exclusively in the United States on ESPN+.

Ramirez has been training in Las Vegas under Ismael Salas and has been flawless since a stunning defeat in his August 2019 pro debut. In 2020, he won four fights inside the MGM Grand Bubble, including a shutout over Adan Gonzales, the man who edged him in his debut. He is coming off a career-best victory last October over the previously unbeaten Orlando Gonzalez. This is what Ramirez had to say at Salas Boxing Academy, less than three weeks before his bout with Donovan.

“I’m happy to return as a professional boxer to the UK, the place where it all started for me as an 18-year-old winning my first Olympic gold medal at the 2012 London Games.”

“Two Olympic gold medals and what many consider a storied amateur career will mean nothing to me unless I achieve greatness as a professional. In many ways, I see this fight as an opportunity for the world to get to know Robeisy ‘El Tren’ Ramirez and for me to take a big leap in my quest to become a world champion.”

“There’s this longstanding stereotype of the Cuban fighter as highly skilled, yet boring. That is not my case. There’s a reason why they call me ‘The Train.’ I come forward.”

“I’m fast, strong, and I have the ring IQ to beat anyone in the featherweight division. February 26 on ESPN+ will be the platform from which I show the world that I am ready to contend for a world title.”

“On February 26, I will fight representing Cuba, my homeland, and the United States, the place that welcomed me and gave me the opportunity to fulfill my dreams as a professional boxer.”

Josh Taylor entered training camp for the Jack Catterall fight significantly overweight, to the point he was ridiculed via social for his “dad-bod”.

Josh Taylor is also massive for a 140lb-er, which means that making weight won’t be easy for him, even when he’s in-shape.

This means that even though a victory for Taylor over Catterall should be a mere formality (a very easy win), it might be a tough night if the Scot is struggling with his weight, coupled with a lack of motivation.

Therefore, even though I thoroughly expect Taylor to trounce Catterall, it wouldn’t surprise me to Josh delivering a lacklustre performance.

Regardless as to whether we see Taylor at his best or worst against Catteral, the Scot definitely beats the Englishman. The only question is whether Josh looks good doing so.

For the record, Jack Catterall will be the sixth consecutive unbeaten opponent that Josh Taylor has faced.

Josh Taylor's last 7 opponents have a combined record of 164-1 including Catterall who he fights Saturday!

He's very underrated in my opinion.

The records don’t mean anything usually.

However in Taylor’s case, when you look at the individual opponents and the types of opponents they had, it really is good.

Impossible to tell really. He hasn't fought at anywhere near this level.
One of those protected guys who makes it all the way to a mandatory shot - then gets dropped in the shark pool using his inflated "0" as a life preserver. First bite from Taylor is going to pop that and we will wait for either a KO or a drawn out, hard to watch, face rearranging 12 round beatdown.
Or... Catterall could pull off the upset of the decade..

You need experience fights. Tough fights. Which prepare you for the world title fights.

Catt hasn’t had that.
