Galal Yafai Signs With Matchroom Boxing

Olympic Gold Medalist Galal Yafai Signs With Matchroom, Pro Debut February 27 At The O2

Galal Yafai remained in the amateur ranks long enough to pursue his dream of capturing a Gold medal.

He doesn’t plan on wasting any time now that he has officially arrived on the pro stage.

One of the standouts from the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Yafai has formally entered a promotional pact with Matchroom Boxing. The deal was announced Thursday along with confirmation that the 29-year-old from Birmingham, England will make his pro debut on the already announced February 27 DAZN show from The O2 in London.

Yafai’s opponent has yet to be revealed, though he will straight into a ten-round contest for his first fight.

"The goal now is to win a World Title," said Yafai. "I know there’s not many who have won Olympic Gold and then a World Title so hopefully I can add my name to that list. There’s some great current World Champions out there at the minute, I’m not going to call out any names but my time will come - I have set my sights on being at the very top.

"I’ve boxed all over the World with Team GB, it’s made me into a better fighter no doubt. I’ve fought and sparred with many styles which will stand me in good stead in the pro game. Eyes will be on me as a pro but I thrive on the pressure and it’s a really exciting time to be entering this new chapter of my career.”

Yafai hails from a boxing family as the younger brother of former WBA junior bantamweight titlist Kal Yafai (26-1, 15KOs) and current junior featherweight fringe contender Gamal Yafai (18-2, 10KOs). The youngest of the Yafai brothers had the opportunity to turn pro following his stint in the 2016 Rio Olympics, though the feeling of returning home empty handed delayed that journey.

The one-year postponement that came with the 2020 Tokyo Olympics added to the temptation of abandoning his Gold medal quest, though patience proved be a virtue.

Yafai stuck it out, going on to become the first male British boxer since James DeGale to win five Olympic fights. He did so amidst a loaded flyweight field, including a quarterfinal round win over Cuba’s Yosbany Veitia. Subsequent wins over Kazakhstan’s Saken Bibossinov and Philippines’ Carlos Paalam saw Yafai claim Gold, anchoring a Great Britain team that went 25-9 in Olympic competition along with six medals.

"I remember standing on the podium with the National Anthem playing with the medal around my neck, it was a surreal moment,” recalled Yafai. “I enjoyed my time in Tokyo and now I’m ready for the next step. Matchroom are the biggest promotional company in the world.

“I’ve known Eddie for years obviously with all the shows with my brothers so it was the best fit for me to become a World Champion."

Signing with Matchroom was a no-brainer for Yafai. In addition to the family ties, Yafai now joins the leading U.K. promotional outfit who signed the last two male boxers to capture Olympic Gold—former two-time unified heavyweight titlist Anthony Joshua (24-2, 22KOs) and former title challenger Luke Campbell (20-4, 16KOs).

“I’m over the moon to secure the signature of Olympic Gold Medallist Galal Yafai and we welcome him with open arms to the Matchroom Boxing and DAZN team,” stated Eddie Hearn, chairman of Matchroom Sport. “Galal was the standout British fighter at the Games and we have a long-standing relationship with his brothers, so it was personally very important to me to get this done.

“Galal is going to do things very differently, for his professional debut at The O2 we are looking for him to challenge for his first professional title and from there move quickly to a World Title which we expect him to win across multiple divisions. This young man is an exceptional talent and you are going to be able to watch him on the biggest shows all over the world live on DAZN.”

Yafai’s placement on the February 27 show comes in supporting capacity to the already announced WBO cruiserweight title fight between defending champ Lawrence Okolie (17-0, 14KOs)—who represented Great Britain in 2016 Rio—and Poland’s Michal Cieslak (21-1, 15KOs).

Great to see Eddie saying they are going "Lomachenko" style with Galal and look for title fights asap - lets hope he keeps it up.

Should have done this with many of the class of 2016 also - not just Eddie but FW also (Joyce and Buatsi).

I think Joyce was matched well when he turned pro. Several good learning fights - particularly the Jennings fight. Bar the Dubois fight it’s slowed down for Joyce since joining Frank and he’s been too inactive.

Buatsi wasn’t pushed enough and a chunk of that is down to Matchroom, some of it is bad luck due to injuries but apparently Buatsi didn’t always lead the life between fights.

I think most Olympians turning over will be getting great money nowadays so if it’s slow progression then it doesn’t help anyone as not many of them will be selling decent ticket volumes out of the gate. Plus the bulk of them are a little older than when previous cycles of Olympians have turned over.

Genuinely think Jennings could have been Joyce' second fight.

Would be extremely brave. He fought Jennings after about 20 months as a pro. That’s after Ustinov and Stiverne before that. I’d say that’s being moved along well. He was fighting every couple of months early doors too which I think helped him.

What weights he going at?

Doesn't mention it in the article above.

His first bout a 10 rounder, very good, just like Joyce.

Let's see, not the easiest divisions either down there.

The thing with HW is that since JJ turned pro, the belts have always been tied up.

There was two belt holders and to really earn you're shot at a world title, you need to become a mandatory. or be lucky enough to be picked as voluntary.

I get that re: the belts being tied up but that doesn’t explain why he fought once last year and has nothing confirmed this year. Joyce needs to be active at his stage.

Yes true it would have been brave, but being honest Joyce was practically a pro for years anyway in the AMS - fought many a tougher challenge than Lewinson in the amateurs (I didn't mind that as a debut).

Haye was calling out Chisroa and no one was saying "that's a rediculous step", brave yes.... but beyond the realms that Joyce couldn't win - no, not even as fight 2. I would put Jennings on Chisora's level. In fact I would say Chisora had more amibtion of Jennings back then - Jennings was more like the Chisora now.

What was he 32/33 turning over - he needed to get a move on.

29 is pretty old for a fly so i understand getting a quick start. But is Galal Yafai good enough to go Loma style? surely should fight a couple of 6, couple of 8 and then a couple of 10 rounders. Would only take him a year if he stayed active....

Galal won olympic gold, but did it off the back of 4 split decisions, i personaly dont remember well enough to know how good he is, and i like the intent but i still think why not 2 x 6s, 2 x 8s, 2 x 10s to begin and get use to pro boxing is as fast as anyone short of exceptional needs to go.

Apart from anything else hard getting big fights when your 3 fights deep if your not "the greatest amature of all time"...

been easy work for galal over his first 2, which were appropriately matched fights given his age and amateur background. looked pretty good and i wish the likes of frazier clarke were being matched like this.

at his age, i see no reason to stick around at a level once he easily wins there, hence he should step up again in his 3rd fight

my suggestion is the guy who battered harvey horn: https://boxrec.com/en/proboxer/467865

28-14 looks mediocre, but a closer look at his losses shows he was often fighting up in weight and was competitive with good names, dropping andrew selby twice, and winning rounds against paul butler, etc

Good call re: your the next fight.

I really like the look of Yafai but I think he’s need to be stepped up in each fight because whilst he offensively looks great, he may get in to some bad habits defensively. I’d have no problem if he fights for a title in 7th/8th fight.

Why are AMs turning over so late? Must be getting a lovely life boxing with the big gloves.

At the lighter weights it is pretty pointless turning pro without an Olympic medal if you're on podium funding.
