"I had good chats with Nakisa [Bidarian] and Jake Paul and those guys at Most Valuable [Promotions],” Hearn revealed to Chris Mannix on his podcast.

“They appear to wanna make that fight — so do we. We’ve already spoken to The Garden about doing that fight in April. I think we can do it,” he adds before revealing he wants to make a big room big statement.

“But why go in the small room? I mean, one thing’s for sure – that small room sells out real fast for that fight, right? So, if we want to make a statement for women’s boxing, you’ve got the powerhouse of Matchroom, you’ve got the powerhouse of Jake Paul, you’ve got the powerhouse of two of the great female pound-for-pound fighters of all time. Let’s roll the dice.

“Because if we want to put women’s boxing at the forefront, and we want to make a statement, you don’t make a statement by going in a small hall. You make a statement going in the big hall. And if it catches fire, if people understand it, if people buy into the hype, which doesn’t even need to be there, I think it can capture the imagination. And I think it can fill it up.”

‘We’re on the brink now’: Eddie Hearn on Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano announcement, Jake Paul's 'brilliant' role

A fight between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano would be the biggest in the history of women’s boxing, he said on The DAZN Boxing Show.

Undisputed women’s lightweight champion Katie Taylor and seven-weight world champion Amanda Serrano are on the brink of agreeing terms for a fight this April.

Speaking to The DAZN Boxing Show, Matchroom boss Eddie Hearn revealed that contracts are being finalised and an announcement is imminent.

“The contracts are getting finalised at the moment. We're on the brink now,” Hearn said.

“That's the biggest fight in the history of female boxing. And it's going to be a massive fight for boxing in 2022.”

Hearn also had praise for the work Jake Paul has done for Serrano when it comes to increasing her profile. The unified women's world featherweight champion has a promotional deal with the internet star’s Most Valuable Promotions.

“Jake Paul has done a brilliant job for her [Amanda Serrano]. He's massively increased Amanda Serrano's value,” Hearn stated.

“She deserves this, the price that was offered three years ago, that's not the price anymore. As they say, yesterday's price is not today and Jake Paul's a massive reason for that.

“Female boxing doesn't get any bigger than this fight. I mean, in a way I want to stop saying ‘this is the biggest fight in female boxing.’ This is one of the biggest fights in boxing.”

Taylor v Serrano deal 'on the verge'

Irish boxer Katie Taylor is in line to finally fight seven-weight world champion Amanda Serrano in the United States in April.

Serrano has seen her profile soar in the US since teaming up with YouTuber turned boxer Jake Paul - and both women are considered among the greatest female fighters of all time.

Hearn - who promotes Taylor - revealed the agreement was "on the verge" of completion and he was targeting a 30 April fight date at the iconic venue of Madison Square Garden in New York.

"Taylor-Serrano, we are right on the cusp, right on the verge," Hearn revealed. "I think you could even get an announcement as early as this week. It has been a long time coming.

"The fight is twice as big it ever has been. April 30 is a target date. Madison Square Garden, the big room.

"The people in charge at MSG have said this a big room fight. This is a historic fight. It's never going to get any bigger than this."

Press Release

Years in the making, the biggest fight ever in women’s boxing between the pound-for-pound #1 and #2 fighters of the world is one that will not only make boxing history, but women’s sports history. MSG has hosted thousands of fights through its illustrious years, beginning more than a century ago on July 17, 1882; now, 140 years later, this matchup finally marks the very first time two female fighters are headlining a combat sports event at the world’s most famous arena.

Irish icon Taylor (20-0 6 KOs) puts all the Lightweight belts on the line for the sixth time since winning them in June 2019 in a war with Delfine Persoon and seeing off the Belgian in a rematch in England before repelling the challenges of Miriam Gutierrez, Natasha Jonas, Jennifer Han and Firuza Sharipova – and there’s added spice to the fight as Taylor holds a win over Amanda’s sister Cindy in Boston back in October 2018.

Puerto Rican sensation Serrano (42-1-1 30 KOs) already has an unrivalled legacy in the sport as a seven-weight World champion. The Brooklyn based champion enters the momentous bout in sparkling form after knocking out Daniela Bermudez last March, dominating Yamileth Mercado in August and overpowering Miriam Gutierrez in two separate cards co-starring Jake Paul. Amanda was the 2021 Female Fighter of the Year for DAZN, ESPN and WBC among others.

“This is a fight I've wanted for a long, long time and I'm just excited for it to finally take place because these are the kind of fights I'm in the sport for,” said Taylor. “People have been talking about this fight for years and there have been times I wondered if it was ever going to happen so I'm very grateful to Eddie Hearn, everyone at Matchroom, DAZN and Madison Square Garden for getting it over the line.

“When I turned professional my goal was to be involved in huge events like this so to headline at Madison Square Garden in a fight of this magnitude is really the pinnacle of the sport. It's such an iconic venue and has been home to so many of the historic moments in boxing and I truly believe this will be another one.”

“It is a dream come true to have the opportunity to headline Madison Square Garden and do so against one of the greatest boxers of all time in Katie Taylor,” said Serrano. “Since I was a young girl, my only boyfriend has been boxing. I have dedicated my life to him, and this event makes that commitment worth every minute. On April 30th I am going to make history for me, for my team, for my family, for Puerto Rico, for every Latina and Latino and for all women worldwide.”

From the moment Katie Taylor stepped into my office, this is the moment we always dreamed of,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “The moment the world would stop and watch and watch the two greatest female fighters on the planet headline at the Mecca of boxing, Madison Square Garden.

“Taylor vs. Serrano is a fight for the history books. Yes, it’s the by far the biggest female fight of all time but it’s also one of the biggest fights of all time, the undisputed World and Olympic champion against the seven division World champion.

“Both fighters deserve credit for getting this fight made, as does Jake Paul and his team at Most Valuable Promotions, DAZN and Madison Square Garden - together we’re going to put on a special night in New York and create a fitting spectacle for these trailblazers to shine.”

“We are honored to be a part of this historic event, headlined by two historically dominant women. Bringing attention to women’s boxing has been a priority for us and Saturday April 30th is a major milestone for not just the sport but girls globally who deserve equal opportunity," said Jake Paul and Nakisa Bidarian, Co-Founders of Most Valuable Promotions. “We expect a battle for the ages and have the utmost respect and admiration for Katie Taylor. But make no mistake, we are standing next to Amanda Serrano and know she will prove to the world that she is the pound-for-pound greatest female boxer to ever enter the ring. This is more than a fight, this is for forever.”

“This is without question the biggest fight ever in women’s boxing,” said Ed Breeze, DAZN EVP, Rights. “Katie Taylor is a trailblazer in the sport, with a perfect amateur record and pivotal in catapulting women’s boxing into the mainstream. Serrano is a true legend and will be Taylor’s toughest test to date. This fight will be spectacular and also one for the history books, and we’re thrilled to deliver this exciting moment in boxing and sports history to DAZN subscribers across the world.”

As the first ever women to headline at Madison Square Garden, Taylor and Serrano will come face-to-face in the Big Apple on the first leg of a global press tour next Wednesday, February 2 – timed in honor of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, a day of observance in the U.S. acknowledging the accomplishments of female athletes and recognizing the importance of equal opportunities in sport for girls and women. Billie Jean King - tennis icon, equality champion, and Women’s Sports Foundation founder - is delighted that the fight will take center stage at the legendary arena.

“The Taylor vs. Serrano fight at Madison Square Garden is historic and it is only fitting it is being held in the venue that has hosted so many important championships in sports,” said King. “These two women are breaking barriers and opening doors for others by being the main event and not the undercard, fighting for one of the biggest paydays in boxing and showing everyone that if you can see it, you can be it.”

“Saturday, April 30 will be another historic night of boxing at Madison Square Garden,” said Joel Fisher, executive vice president, MSG Marquee Events. “The Garden has been home to some of the most iconic events in the history of boxing, and Amanda Serrano and Katie Taylor will usher in another legendary night, becoming the first women to headline a show at the ‘Mecca of Boxing’. We wish them both good luck and congratulate them on this groundbreaking achievement.”

I wonder if it sells enough to open the upper bowl.
Some boxing events there don't use the upper level.
Probably depends on how many fans cross the pond with Katie.

This would be that rare thing - a women's fight to get really excited about IF THEY WERE THE SAME SIZE.

But, they're not, so "meh".

Crews-Dezurn vs. Cederroos Undisputed Super Middleweight Clash Added To Taylor-Serrano

Madison Square Garden will now play host to at least two undisputed championship fights on April 30.

The oft-postponed WBC/WBA/IBF/WBO super middleweight title fight between Franchon Crews-Dezurn and Elin Cederroos now has a home, as the bout has been added to an increasingly potent April 30 DAZN show at MSG in New York City. News of the championship clash was confirmed by Matchroom Boxing on Tuesday, serving in supporting capacity to another undisputed champion, as reigning lightweight que en Katie Taylor (20-0, 6 KOs) defends her crown versus record-setting seven-division titlist Amanda Serrano (42-1-1, 30KOs).

“Next fight announced for the huge #TaylorSerrano card – the undisputed World Super Middleweight Championship,” Eddie Hearn, chairman of Matchroom Sport announced Tuesday. “#CrewsDezurnCederroos April 30 live on DAZN from Madison Square Garden.”

A press conference will be held Wednesday at MSG to formally announce Taylor-Serrano along with the undercard.

Crews-Dezurn (7-1, 2 KOs; 1 ND) saw her unified WBC/WBO title reign restored nearly two years ago following a controversial fight with Mexico’s Alejandra Jimenez. The Jan. 2020 clash in San Antonio initially saw Jimenez claim a disputed split decision win, only for the verdict to be overturned by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) after the unbeaten 33-year-old from Cancun tested positive for the banned substance stanozolol.

The chain of events prompted the WBO to restore Crews-Dezurn’s title reign last March, while the WBC was slower to the draw before finally coming correct last June. Crews-Dezurn has since returned to the ring last January, scoring an eight-round points win over Ashleigh Curry who badly missed weight for their non-title fight at American Airlines Center in Dallas.

Cederroos (8-0, 4 KOs) has not fought since unifying the WBA and IBF titles in a thrilling 10-round unanimous decision win over Alicia Napoleon as part of a January 2020 Showtime event in Atlantic City. The fight was scored 95-94 on all three cards, with a 2nd round knockdown providing the margin of victory for Sweden’s Cederroos who made her U.S. debut.

The upcoming showdown with Crews-Dezurn will mark her second straight stateside appearance and third overall title fight for Cederroos, who claimed the IBF belt following a 10-round majority decision win over Femke Hermans in March 2019.

Crews-Dezurn and Cederroos were originally tied to the traveling circus that was the WBA/IBF/WBO lightweight title clash between Teofimo Lopez and George Kambosos. Both bouts were due to take place on a Triller Fight Club Pay-Per-View last June in Miami, only to suffer two postponements within the month before relocating altogether. The super middleweight championship was moved to a September TrillerVerz show, only to drop from the bill after it was learned that Cederroos’ travel to the U.S. was never secured by event handlers.

The fallout was the last straw for Crews-Dezurn, who split from Golden Boy Promotions in testing the free agent market. She and Cederroos were both signed by Matchroom in early January, the announcement accompanied by confirmation that an undisputed championship clash was forthcoming.

The winner will become the sixth true undisputed champion in the sport, joining Katie Taylor (lightweight), Jessica McCaskill (welterweight) and Claressa Shields (junior middleweight) on the female side. Josh Taylor (junior welterweight) and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez are the only current male undisputed champions.

Shields also previously served as undisputed middleweight champion and remains the division’s lineal champ. She fights this weekend, with a win over Ema Kozin leading to an undisputed middleweight championship clash with WBO titlist Savannah Marshall later this year.

Also in the works is an undisputed junior welterweight championship between WBC/IBF champ Chantelle Cameron (15-0, 8KOs) and WBA/WBO/IBO titlist Kali Reis (19-7-1, 5 KOs).

The announcement of the undisputed super middleweight championship marks the third confirmed fight for the April 30 DAZN show. Also revealed earlier Tuesday was the rescheduled junior middleweight clash between former two-division titlist Jessie Vargas and former WBO junior middleweight titleholder Liam Smith.

At least one more female title fight is expected to land on the April 30, whether an undisputed or unified championship clash.

What Katie Taylor & Amanda Serrano had to say

Katie Taylor: This really is the best fight in boxing right now

“I’ve had my eyes on Amanda Serrano and this is a fight I’ve been looking forward to for quite some time now.”

“This is history right here and all of our hard work is going to be paid off for at this time.”

“I think that this fight is the most exciting fight in the sport, not just female boxing. This really is the best fight in boxing right now.”

“We are both great champions, she has a great record and she’s a great fighter. We have seen the likes of McCaskill and others; but I want to be the best fighter.”

Amanda Serrano: Never did I imagine making the money I have today. I mean, headlining MSG, like what?

“No time is better than right now. Happy Women and Girls in Sports Day … Women, we are changing the sport. I am honored to share the ring with Katie Taylor.”

“I have to thank my coach for not accepting the first couple fights. He knew what I was worth and now we are working with MVP.”

“I don’t need to talk bad about any of my opponents. I do all of my talking inside the ring.”

“13 years, I’ve been professional and every other day I have wanted to quit… never did I imagine making the money I have today. I mean, headlining MSG, like what?”

Eddie Hearn: We expect to fill up the Garden completely, an unbelievable undercard being planned

“Welcome to the iconic Madison Square Garden here in New York for the history making occasion, April 30 the undisputed women’s lightweight world championship here from the Mecca of boxing MSG. The first time in 140 years of boxing and combat sport history, two females headline here.”

“This is going to be not just the biggest female fights of all time, but one of the biggest fights of all time. Katie Taylor is a huge draw in Ireland and the UK, Amanda here in the US, both women have headlined on major events around the world.”

“We expect to fill up the Garden completely, an unbelievable undercard being planned for April 30 already, two-division world champion Jessie Vargas will take on Liam Smith from Liverpool. The undisputed super-middleweight world championship between Crews-Dezurn and Cederroos also on the card, as well as many more to come.”

“Thank you to everyone for their support, this feels like an iconic moment for the sport in boxing, a moment that a lot of us have worked very hard towards. As Jake said earlier, to those great fighters that have come before them, for now we celebrate Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano who will make history here at Madison Square Garden on April 30.”

Jake Paul: I’ll always be involved in this sport and pushing to make boxing a better place

“What an honor to be here at the historic Madison Square Garden, I want to give a big thanks to Jim Dolan and the entire MSG team for making history with us – for real.”

“Women have been boxing since the early 1900’s but it wasn’t until 1999 that they were able to compete professionally. 23 years later here we are with one of the biggest fights ever headlined by two women at Madison Square Garden.”

“Today is about Amanda and Katie, the two best female boxers in the world right now, they deserve this stage, this historic payday and they deserve to settle who is the pound for pound best which is why I’m excited to see this fight.”

“It’s also about Anne Wolf, Christine Martin, Leila Ali, Mia St. John and so many other legendary boxers that helped lay the foundations for the ladies to be sitting here today. It’s about Clarissa Shields, Mikaela Mayer, Alycia Baumgardner and other amazing professionals currently in the sport. Most of all it’s about the future young women and girls all around the world who will see April 30 as a moment that made the impossible, possible, equality as it’s meant to be.”

“It’s an honor to be here with Eddie Hearn, Matchroom Boxing, DAZN, MSG, we’re grateful to Katie Taylor and here team to commit to taking this fight. Of course, most of all we’re proud to stand with Amanda Serrano, the superstar, a woman who has dedicated her life to boxing. Now it’s time to start showing the commitment she has made and show the world how important women’s boxing is to people like bob Arum who misspoke earlier this week. He’s going to eat his words April 30 and see how impactful this fight, I’m excited to be here and let’s make history.

“I’m a fight fan, I fell in love with boxing and I’m passionate about boxing all the way around. When I met Amanda Serrano and I heard her story and how hard she’s worked, I see how hard she is trained, she’s getting paid pennies on the dollar and being taken advantage of from people in her career. She needed help and guidance, to be put on a pedestal – she’s a superstar. I’m excited to be promotor Paul and we might be sitting next to each other a few more times in the future. I’ll always be involved in this sport and pushing to make boxing a better place.”

Katie Taylor Turns Down Amanda Serrano’s 12 Three-Minute Rounds Proposal For Title Unification Bout

The Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano women’s 10-round lightweight title unification bout is primed to set all kinds of records pertaining to purse, profile, and pedigree. With so much attention foisted on their bout, Brooklyn-based Puerto Rican Serrano doesn’t see why they shouldn’t up the ante and push for the inauguration of one of the most debated topics in women’s boxing: increasing their title bout to 12 rounds with each round fought at three-minutes apiece, instead of two, just as it is in men’s boxing.

Serrano, brought up the challenge to Ireland’s Taylor during a press conference Monday in London to promote their title bout, which will take place April 30 at Madison Square Garden. One issue: Taylor wasn’t much interested in the idea.

“We’re making the biggest payday, both of us,” Serrano began. “I think we should continue to make this fight iconic, make [changes] in this game. If Katie Taylor is willing, I’m ready and able to make this an equal fight: 12 rounds, three minutes.

“I say if you want to make change, we should make it on the platform [we have] right now, DAZN. We’re making headlines, we’re talking, we’re getting interest. This is about equality and we should make the change right now.

“So, Katie, you up for it?”

“12 three-minute rounds?” Taylor asked.

“12 three-minute rounds,” Serrano reiterated. “Let’s do it like the men.”

Taylor responded, ”I don't think it will make a huge difference to the event, it's already iconic as it is.”

Later in the presser, Serrano, alluding to recent unflattering comments on women’s boxing made by promoter Bob Arum, doubled down on her insistence for pushing for increased minutes.

“If we want to get people to notice us and not get these promoters to talk badly about women, I think we need to take a stand,” Serrano said.

That prompted Taylor to respond, “I think we're making a stand the way we're fighting each other in the first place. The best fighting the best. This fight is actually even more important than we realize. Not only are we breaking the ceiling with female purses, but we're actually changing perceptions.”

Even if Taylor had agreed to Serrano’s terms on the spot, it’s not likely their title bout – for which binding contacts have been signed – can be retrofitted in such a manner. The decision would require the unanimous approval of the promoters and the sanctioning bodies, whose titles both Serrano and Taylor are fighting for and which are responsible for lending the event so much historical weight. Moreover, the head of the WBC, Mauricio Sulaiman, has publicly stated that his organization will not sanction any women’s bouts that consist of three-minute rounds, citing research that shows that women are more susceptible to concussions than men. On that view, if 35-year-old Taylor (20-0, 6 KOs) and 33-year-old Serrano (42-1-1, 30 KOs) were to push for three-minute rounds, that would mean their title bout, in theory, would be downgraded to a unification bout, not an undisputed championship.

After the press conference, Serrano, whose co-manager is Jake Paul, expressed her disappointment with Taylor’s response.

“I thought she would’ve been on board with it because she’s always talking about equality and making a change for women’s boxing,” Serrano told a group of reporters. “I thought she would have been on board, because this is our platform, this is our time to showcase women’s boxing, making history. Why don’t we just continue to make history together?

“We both deserve this platform. I thought it was going to be a different answer.”

I agree with Serrano asking for 3 minute rounds. It would increase the money and respect for women’s boxing if this was the usual length of each round and also fight for 12 rounds instead of 10. Maybe this will happen if Serrano and Taylor have a rematch.

Katie Taylor: If You Go Down List Of Fighters We've Faced, You'll Recognize More Names On My Resume

Katie Taylor readily acknowledges the difficult task she next faces in her upcoming pound-for-pound showdown with Amanda Serrano on April 30 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

There is also the belief that years of experience at the top level have prepared her for this very moment.

“We’re both great champions. She has a great record, there’s no doubt about it,” Taylor said. “She’s a great fighter. We’re both going to be stepping into the ring fight night believing we’re going to come out victorious.

“One thing about it is, if you go down the list of fighters we’ve faced you will recognize more names on my resume.”

Ireland’s Taylor (20-0, 6 KOs) attempts her thirteenth title defense of at least one lightweight belt and sixth as undisputed champion versus Serrano (42-1-1, 30 KOs), a Brooklyn-bred Puerto Rican southpaw who has won belts in a record seven weight divisions. The April 30 DAZN main event marks the first time ever that a women’s boxing match will headline in the main room at Madison Square Garden, fittingly versus two of the best female fighters on the planet.

Taylor has held at least one lightweight belt since her seventh pro fight. The two-tour Olympian and 2012 Olympic Gold medalist was just eleven months into her pro career when she dethroned WBA lightweight titlist Anahi Ester Sanchez via unanimous decision in October 2017.

Twelve successful title defenses have since followed. Five have come as the undisputed lightweight queen after defeating IBF champ Victoria Bustos, unbeaten WBO titlist Rose Volante and streaking WBC champ and pound-for-pound entrant Delfine Persoon along the way. Taylor’s first win over Persoon took place in June 2019 at MSG, on the undercard of Andy Ruiz’s historic, upset win over Anthony Joshua to become the first Mexican to win the heavyweight title.

Dating back to her win over Sanchez, Taylor enjoyed a stretch of eight straight wins over former, current or future champions. The Irish superstar was the last fighter to beat Jessica McCaskill, who went on to unify two belts at junior welterweight and is the current undisputed welterweight queen. Taylor’s list also includes a repeat win over Persoon, a scorching ten-round decision over former amateur rival Natasha Jonas and even a shutout win over Cindy Serrano, Amanda’s older sister.

“You’ll see the likes of McCaskill, the likes of Persoon and the likes of Jonas, among others,” Taylor notes of her stellar resume. “You’ll also see the top class amateur boxers as an amateur as well. I have been tested, I have been refined.

“I believe that will (serve well) in a fight this competitive. We’re both going in there in the best shape as well and may the best fighter win.”

Serrano has won at least one belt in every weight division from junior bantamweight (115 pounds) through junior welterweight (140 pounds). The 33-year-old Puerto Rican superstar managed title wins at 140 and 115 in back-to-back fights—and in that order—before making her way back to featherweight, where she entered her third title reign and has emerged as the unified WBC/WBO/IBO champ.

Serrano moved back up to lightweight in her most recent start last December, a ten-round win over Miriam Gutierrez (14-2, 5 KOs) whose lone other defeat came in a title losing effort to Taylor in November 2020.
