Vergil Ortiz Jr., Michael McKinson agree to early 2022 fight, sources say

Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Michael McKinson have agreed to a fight that will headline a DAZN event in early 2022, sources told ESPN on Monday.

Ortiz, ESPN's No. 4 welterweight, is one of boxing's fastest-rising stars. In his toughest test yet, Ortiz encountered some early rocky moments before scoring an eighth-round stoppage of Egidijus Kavaliauskas in August.

The power-punching Texan was ranked No. 4 on ESPN's top 25 boxers under 25. Ortiz (18-0, 18 KOs) also owns a win over former champion Maurice Hooker, a seventh-round KO in March.

McKinson (21-0, 2 KOs) doesn't offer name recognition or experience, but he does present the sort of awkward southpaw style that will only aid Ortiz's development.

The 27-year-old Englishman only has two knockout wins, but he has scored six knockdowns in his last four fights.

Ortiz, 23, is promoted by Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions.

Hmmm……interesting fight.

Mckinson’s a tidy boxer but doesn’t have much power so doubt he’ll be able to keep Ortiz off. I like Ortiz but don’t rate him as highly as some do.

Mckinson needed to roll the dice as he doesn’t really have an entertaining style or sell many tickets so makes sense for him.

Surely Ortiz walks through McKinson? Might take a few rounds but surely the lack of power at the level will just see Ortiz eventually walk him down and take a jab to land a shot.

There is a reason why GBP have sleeved McKinson.

He's southpaw.

Crawford and Spence also fight southpaw, and I think it's very good learning experience to fight southpaws at the early stages, to get used to them, cus they can be very tricky.

Wouldn't want to fight your first southpaw on you're first world title challenge or first defence.

Michael is a decent Euro level fighter but he is going to get completely mauled by Ortiz Jr.
If Ortiz Jr wants to try out a few things it might go six. But it reckon Mckinson will be done by round four.

He might let him box a bit, get him boxing with his southpaw stance etc.

Then maul him.

I’ve not seen much of him but i rewatched the Kav fight a couple of times as I really enjoyed it.

Considering his reputation as a pure banger type I didn’t think his defence was too bad- as long as he wasn’t letting his hands go wildly- not much by way of head movement though.

It seemed though that his way of taking fewer punches was to really focus on that incredible shotgun jab, and pick up the pace when the jab has broken Kav down. I thought it was a nicely fought fight tactically, in that sense, really seemed like he fought to a game plan. Against any fighter without elite foot movement I think that tactic alone would be hard to beat, straight up guys he can butcher with that jab. Seemed GGG-level heavy to me. I was rapt.

Vergil is not ready for the Crawfords or Spence fights yet; he is still catching too many punches despite his very high guard. Those two would either stop him or clearly outpoint him as they bust him up. He needs another year or two.

I do rate him very highly though. He makes his opponent fight to keep the distance; the Hooker and Kavalausiuiokas (however you spell it) were fantastic wins, and showed his style is effective .. he is a puncher who doesn`t go looking for the head shots; it was body shots that set up the two last opponents demise (before Hooker broke his hand of course).

I know its off topic - Conor Benn wouldn`t last too long with Vergil. Would be a great fight for the 3-4 rounds it lasts.

Mckinson is a smart boxer at his level. I feel thats a level or two below Vergil. He will do well to last until the 6th - he will need to be very fit because without a punch Vergil is walking him down behind that snappy jab and winging hooks to his body.

Jaime Munguia-D'Mitrius Ballard Set For 2/19, Vergil Ortiz Jr.-Michael McKinson On 3/19

One of boxing’s most electrifying, young knockout artists is set to return to the ring March 19.

Boxing Scene has confirmed that unbeaten welterweight contender Vergil Ortiz Jr. will meet Michael McKinson in a main event that night. The venue hasn’t been determined for the 12-round bout in which Ortiz (18-0, 18 KOs), of Grand Prairie, Texas, will square off against McKinson (21-0, 2 KOs), of Portsmouth, England.

Golden Boy Promotions and DAZN are expected to announce the Ortiz-McKinson card Friday, as well as a middleweight main event between Jaime Munguia and D’Mitrius Ballard that has been rescheduled for February 19. The venue for the card headlined by Munguia (38-0, 30 KOs), a former WBO junior middleweight champ from Tijuana, and Ballard (21-0-1, 13 KOs), of Temple Hills, Maryland, will be announced Friday.

The 23-year-old Ortiz, an anomaly in that he has knocked out every pro opponent he has faced, figures to be a heavy favorite over the light-punching McKinson. The 27-year-old McKinson has gone the distance in eight straight fights and will take a steep step up in class versus Ortiz, who is on the cusp of receiving a welterweight world title shot.

ESPN.com’s Mike Coppinger was the first to report the Ortiz-McKinson and Munguia-Ballard bouts on Twitter.

Ortiz will fight for the first time since his eighth-round stoppage of Egidijus Kavaliauskas on August 14 at Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas.

Ortiz displayed both vulnerability and resolve versus Lithuania’s Kavaliauskas (22-2-1, 18 KOs), who buzzed Ortiz in the second round and landed several hard right hands on Ortiz during the sixth round. Ortiz responded by knocking Kavaliauskas to the canvas four times in the eighth round on his way a to technical-knockout victory.

Munguia, meanwhile, has agreed to battle Ballard in a fight that was supposed to take place April 23 in El Paso, Texas.

Ballard replaced Poland’s Maciej Sulecki (30-2, 11 KOs) on short notice once Sulecki withdrew from his fight against Munguia, reportedly due to an elbow injury. Soon thereafter, Ballard suffered an elbow injury of his own while training and pulled out of his fight with Munguia, too.

Munguia has boxed twice since his fights with Sulecki and Ballard were scrapped.

He stopped Poland’s Kamil Szeremeta (21-2-1, 5 KOs) after six one-sided rounds June 19 at the University of Texas at El Paso’s Don Haskins Center. On November 13, Munguia out-pointed Philadelphia’s Gabe Rosado (26-14-1, 15 KOs) by unanimous decision in an action-packed 12-rounder at Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

Ballard beat Mexico’s Paul Valenzuela Jr. (26-11, 17 KOs, 1 NC) by unanimous decision in a 10-rounder on the Munguia-Rosado undercard.

Fair play to Eddie Hearn, I don't think any other promoter on the planet would have been able to get McKinson that fight,

Vergil Ortiz-McKinson Heads To USC's Galen Center In LA; Welterweight Now Training With Manny Robles

Vergil Ortiz Jr. will finally be starring under the bright lights of Tinseltown.

The fast-rising welterweight Ortiz (18-0, 18 KOs) will be taking on Michael McKinson on March 19 at the Galen Center on the campus of the University of Southern California.

Ortiz promoter Golden Boy submitted the venue as their desired location for the card on Thursday with the California State Athletic Commission, a source with direct knowledge of the development told BS.com.

The fight against the British prospect McKinson (21-0, 2 KOs) was announced by streaming service DAZN on Jan. 7 without a location or venue.

Also slated to appear on the Oritz-McKinson undercard is 122-pound Los Angeles-based Armenian contender Azat Hovhannisyan (20-3, 16 KOs), sources informed of the negotiations told BS.com

Ortiz will finally be making his headlining debut in Los Angeles after most recently being a popular draw at home in Texas, and he won’t have to travel too far away from his new training grounds to get there.

Ortiz announced on social media that he’ll now be training with the Norwalk, Calif.-based Manny Robles. Ortiz split from coach Robert Garcia in November, Garcia announced.

Ortiz has headlined cards in his hometown of Grand Prairie against Antonio Orozco in August 2019 (KO6), in Fort Worth against Maurice Hooker (KO7) in March and in Frisco against Egidijus Kavaliauskas (TKO 8) in August.

In between, Ortiz has also headlined at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, Calif. against Brad Solomon (KO5) in 219 and Samuel Vargas (KO7) in 2020.

The Fantasy Springs Casino has been a staple location for Golden Boy shows in Southern California in recent years, but it is situated 130 miles away from downtown Los Angeles, where USC is located.

'When you're talking Vergil Ortiz Jr, you're talking savage' - Conor Benn gives his take on Michael McKinson's upcoming American showdown - and is not overly optimistic on Portsmouth fighter's chances

Conor Benn says British welterweight rival Michael McKinson has taken a 'massive risk' by agreeing to an American showdown with 'savage' Vergil Ortiz Jr.

And despite Benn revealing he feels Ortiz Jr is '99-and-a-half per cent' certain to extend his perfect professional record to 19-0 when they meet, he is hoping his fellow English fighter can cause a huge upset on March 19.

Benn expressed his concerns over the calibre of opponent McKinson has previously faced in his unblemished 21-0 pro career as he prepares to step in the ring with a possible 'pound-for-pound' star of the future in Ortiz Jr.

McKinson heads to the States on the back of his biggest career wins over the previously unbeaten Chris Kongo and Poland's Przemyslaw Runowski last year.

But Benn, son of former two-weight world champion Nigel and one of Britain's current leading welterweight hopes, stressed the Pompey Problem will be stepping onto an entirely different stage when he gets in the ring to face one of the leading prospects in the division in Ortiz Jr.

And Benn believes everything will be stacked against McKinson on his big American fight debut. When quizzed on whether he felt it was a 'good fight' during an iFL TV - YouTube, his response told its own story: ‘I don't know about really good fight.’

He continued: ‘You say you don't know what's going to happen, 100 per cent carry ratio from Vergil Ortiz (Jr) is a tell-tell sign what's 99-and-half per cent that is likely to happen again.

‘The only thing I worry about - I hope McKinson wins - the only thing I worry about is there's no measuring stick as to who he's (Mikey) fought to do comparisons to world-level opponents.

‘His opponents, his best wins are against Kongo (Chris) who beat Luther Clay, which wasn't a great fight, and he beat Runowski (Przemyslaw), who Josh Kelly beat with ease, so when you do the comparisons to world level - there is none.

‘When you're talking Vergil Ortiz, you're talking a savage, you're talking someone who, in my opinion, can potentially be pound-for-pound and wants Crawford (Terence), Spence (Errol Jr) and to move up. I even fancy him a little bit now against some of the likes of those names.

‘It's a hard fight, it's a ballsy move, fair play to him for taking the fight - massive risk - but it's a win-win situation, if he gives him a tough fight, it's a win-win.’

I'd love to see McKinson somehow fiddle a win here !

Everyone voting for Ortiz by KO, but it might be Judah vs Witter all over again ? :maybe:

2 now !
It's hard to see judges liking his style, but he's awkward AF and t's not like we're picking him to win by KO.

I voted it just cos I'd love to see it. Realistically, going the distance would be a big win for McK and that's not even very likely.
