It's really weird

Post by pundit »

We (Brockton, Decagon, barry, everbnds, klompton, Ezzard, myself, Alp, Buzz, generic, John L, silkov, Terence, sockdollanger, several others) all share the same passion, and by and large we manage to keep up a discussion at a quite high level; but we cannot get by without constantly insulting each other (I don't exclude myself here, although there are some notable exceptions, such as Alp and Buzz). Accusations of total cluelessness over marginal disagreements are only one of the milder versions of the prevalent debating culture.

I'd feel more comfortable if it was differnet, and tell you what: I actually enjoy the substantial part of the discussions. I've learnt a lot here; and after all we are here to disagree, otherwise this would be totallly uninteresitng. But it's of course up to everyone indivually how he wants to handle himself.

Cheers,

I agree really, though personally I think I avoid insulting people, I have had some cross words with people in the past but that seems to be part of life on forums like this, ...theres a fine line between having differing views on something and then having an argument... I think it is hard for many people to accept that their view on something may be wrong and so in a forum like this arguements are bound to occur now and then.
Personally I'm pretty well amoured for most verbal fisticuffs and mainly draw the line at personal insults sarcasm etc... the bottom line is you should respect other peoples views even if you think they are wrong and if we all did that then the forum would be that more harmonious...

Of course we're all steel-made toughies who can't be affected by nothing, you retarded moron from the piss-town of Manchester.

It still bothers me though if, like this morning, I open this forum and need to find my way through endless posts consisting largely of insults - that don't interested me a bit - before I can get to the substantial stuff.

I treat people the way they treat me! Treat me with respect and I will treat you with respect. Disrespect and treat me like an asshole and you better get ready because I’ll usually go right for the throat and I rarely give a shit about what I say. I can be the nicest person in the world, or I can be a pretty vicious asshole.

Very rarely do I ever start shit, but I often give better than most can take, which can be seen in the several protests over the years to have me banned by a select few who could give shit, but who just couldn’t take it. If a person is going to talk shit, at least have the balls to take it as well instead of whining when someone gets the better of the person.

Personally, I would certainly prefer for everyone to show one another respect, but it's not going to happen...people like being right and a lot do not have the honesty to admit when they are wrong and the person who is right will often rub it in...I know I’m sometimes guilty of that. Could we all get along...again probably not. There are just too many differences of opinion, which is a good thing when it inspires intelligent debate, but people are often too quick to take offense and many are more than happy to resort to nonsense…me included. It would be a hell of a lot better without any nonsense, but I just do not see it happening...that's a good challenge to throw out at people though…see how long people can go without resorting to name-calling, or challenging one’s intelligence.

I respect alot of people's opinions, but the thing I don't like is biased opinions, or opinions from someone who says this fighter is better than another, but if you question that person about the era the person fought in and the like, they lack complete knowledge---that or people accusing me of trickery. I'll treat people how they treat me, but if I feel someone is insinuating negative or under-handed things of my character or question my motives, I'm gonna talk to ya like dog shit.

I personally like everyone here, everybody has a pretty vast knowledge of the eras, and of course the fighters themselves---but I think at the same time, alot of people don't really objectively weigh in on some issues.

So what is a "biased opinion" - if you believe your opinion is the right one, isn't eveybody else's opinion necessarily "biased".

I believe we are here to disagree - what would be the point, otherwise.

I see you have taken my words and twisted them all around Silkov.....I hope you don't use this type of spin in your boxing assessments. I would never dream of using such graphic language.

By resorting to name-calling and insult competitions, we can avoid the over trodden "my daddy could beat up your daddy" shtick that became such a staple of 20th century nomenclature. What else could invigorate us to write an angry and hastily written response full of unsupported facts and pseudo truths?

Example ...

joe louis was a fit and trim 215 lbs! no one could have beaten him except marciano in '51!

Although I don't post too often, I've found this forum out of all the boxrec forums to not only be the most informative, but also the most interesting to read. Especially when both sides make good points. Eventually it gets to the point where posters insult each other, but after debating a bit most posters get over it and continue to make very intelligent points. I don't always agree with those points, but they're usually interesting to read and well written. :TU:

I agree, but I'd like to add one point. Not only is he deadset on his opinions, which can be a good trait, he also has what seems like an endless amount of text to post on any subject. While this could potentially be a bad thing, it usually is quite informative and interesting at the same time.

I agree.

It's the prissy, feminine posters who are tiresome.

They need to find a flower arranging site.

There their delicate sensibilities would be more at home.

Sounds like what these modern boxing "experts" (who never had a fight with their own sister) write in their sales pitches for their Ali.

as much as I make tribute to beer from time to time truth is it's like a rare dessert for me. Love a bottled beer about once a month, but I tip my hat to the idea all the time. Probably giving the wrong impression but I have always been pretty conservative in that dept.....too expensive
