Matchroom Vs Queensberry Vs Boxxer Vs Probellum.

Post by gregregegg »

A few years ago it was pretty clearly Matchroom number 1, Queensberry number 2 and basicaly no third place.

Currently its far less clear. In order currently id probably have as follows.

-Matchroom: Have been on the struggle a bit in terms of momentum and seem to miss the sky machine, have still been putting on some decent cards though.
-Queensberry: havent really got moving this year when it comes to actually cards but there momentum and stable is flying. Fwank is ageing backwards and i feel he could date a super modal soon.
-Boxxer: are new but with skys help instantly are a big deal. They have the best brittish cards during the first month back to boxing. Eubank card, Khan card, Josh taylor card, thats a quality February.
-Probellum: Bit of an unknown, all i know they have sam jones who burst onto the managing scene and always seemed a natrual promoter, so could be sniffing about...

If Frank can get big fights for Yarde, Joyce and Dubois soon, it could be a decent year for him.

It's a much more balanced marketplace. Matchroom #1 by far but in terms of the UK just nowhere near where they were at their different high points since 2013 and the marketplace is balancing things off.

Their success depends on Joshua winning his rematch, the Taylor fight being a big success, the establishing of a successful PPV model, and someone more than just Connor Benn stepping up to capture the wider public's attention.

For me it’s currently…

1. Matchroom - the only one putting on fairly frequent and decent shows.

2. Boxxer - delays at the end of 2021 have given them a really strong February but all we’ve got for March is Marshall headlining in Newcastle. They’re an attractive proposition though for people turning over/looking for something new and the Sky hype machine has never pushed boxing as much.

3. BT - we’re mid Feb and they’ve only got one show announced and it’s a low level one which just one competitive fight. Not sure what FW’s waiting for. They’ve got a handful of top/good fighters and likely be showing Fury/Whyte. I honestly think though if Matchroom/Boxxer had Frank’s line up of fighters we’d have more shows happened or lined up this year. Several of the British Olympians have turned over now and it’s interesting that BT haven’t got any so far.

4. Probellum. Unless they’ve got a big TV deal ready to announce fighters must only be signing with them for money because they’ve not much publicity or exposure. Will be interesting to see if they do work with other U.K. promoters.

In 3 years time I think it will either be Matchroom or Boxxer as number 1. Could also be Probellum but it all comes down to exposure for their fighters (if they get something like ITV then that changes things - big if though).

Why havent Queensbury announced any shows for March, apart from a prospects card ? I find this rather odd. Are there problems with the broadcaster ?

Might be something to do with the 40 million they have sunk into the fury card... But also lots of there big names arent quite available or working on somthing...

Fury booked, DDD needs to make a deal with don king to fight bryant, Joyce has a broken wrist, Callum johnson and yarde were both caught up with the joe smith jr cancelation, Zak parker is trying to fight for a vacant WBO...

Without those guys he has noone to headline cards. no headline = no card. Hopefully it can all get sorted sooner rather than later, id be interested in every one of those guys upcoming bouts.

He said he didn’t plan shows for February because the board cancelled January. Makes no sense to me really.

Frank’s the best U.K. promoter at getting fighters into mandatory positions as his relationship with WBO is great but in recent years the bulk of his fighters haven’t had the fights to prepare themselves for the step up.

Dubois is somehow number 1 with the WBA. The bulk of his fights pre Joyce were poor and he’s fought 2 poor opponents since then. No fights in 5 months and nothing confirmed. I get they want the Bryan fight but if they can’t sort that quickly (which is unlikely with Don King involved) then why not have an interim fight so when he does fight another live opponent he’s a little more prepared for it.

Johnson was unlucky with covid but his fight was called off a month ago. Surely that’s long enough to get something sorted?

It looks like Smith is wanting a unification. Again, wouldn’t it be better for Yarde to be active to build on his good win a couple of months ago?

I understand Parker waiting as they’re talking about Andrade.

What about Avanesyan? Cacace? Essuman? Brad Foster? Sam Maxwell? Lennox Clarke?

Most of these could headline shows given the right opponents.

According to the BBBofC most recent Notice:

EKOW ESSUMAN (Holder) v DARREN TETLEY

The Stewards decided to approve a request from Promoter allegedly for the above voluntary defence contest, which will take place on Saturday, 23rd April 2022 in Derby.

Guessing that Parker will headline, with Nathan Heaney on undercard?

Regardless, only one confirmed show for 2022 is piss poor from Queensbury - how is this acceptable to BT?

He’s announced a show for late March today. Avanesyan, Sheeraz and McCann. All 3 in crap fights.

They announced another show today (see my post above).

The Parker show in Derby makes sense but April 23rd is the reported date for Fury/Whyte and there’s no guarantee Parker’s fighting in the U.K. next if the Andrade fight goes to purse bids and they lose.

The March show looks like it's on the same date as the UFC are in London (also on BT Sport).

Interesting choice of date

I think Sky and Boxxer will come out the winners. Strong strong brand is Sky and huge coverage. The biggest platform domestically.

My faith in queensberrys momentum has quickly faded. Just put out some of the worst shows iv ever seen. I appreciate them naming the opponents more than a week out but I’m this case TBA seems more impressive.

Avasanya and esko are headlining seperate cards against guys about 200th I’m the world… why not fight each other.
