Tony Ayala vs Roberto Duran

Post by zuru »

15 rds Jr Middleweight

Once upon a time long ago I thought Ayala would have won.

The great Duran stops him in the 12th rd with a masterful display of violence.

Great, great fight. I was a big fan of Ayala before his rape/burglary. I thought he’d be a star. The fight was scheduled, I think, for 1982, the year Duran lost to Benitez and Laing. Ayala was a different kind of fighter. He would have been up for a war. My guess is Duran edges it by decision.

Tony Ayala, Jr style was perfect for the great Roberto Duran, who loved fighters to come forward to attack him. Duran would have love this toe to toe warfare, and this is where Duran excels. Ayala wasn't a stick and move boxer, but a slugger that can hit hard. He might have the edge on Duran in youth, but Duran would have had the edge on experience.

Duran by knockot late.

It was scheduled for November, 1982 and the Laing bout(September, 1982) was supposed to be Duran's tuneup. For the sake of argument, if Duran were given a gift decision over Laing and went on to fight Ayala in November, I could see Ayala winning; Duran was awful in the Laing bout but a little better against Batten in November and a lot better in January 1983 and great in June 1983.

In shape, Duran destroys Ayala. I just don't know if Duran could have reached top shape by November, 1982.

The version of Duran from the Cuevas and Moore bouts should be too much for Ayala. Duran would likely win a clear cut decision, or possibly get a tko in the later rounds.

Ayala's defense wasn't that good and he got caught and hurt a few times before facing top-notch competition. Duran would have stopped him between rounds 4-7.

Roberto Duran got to come well prepared a la Davey Moore bout. Anything less than that like in the Wilfred Benitez or Kirkland Laing state would get him murdered by this young shark named Tony Ayala, Jr.
