Press Release

The 12-round, lightweight Texas showdown will take place at San Antonio’s historic Alamodome on Saturday, April 9th, and will be streamed live worldwide on DAZN.

Tickets for Garcia vs. Tagoe go on sale Tuesday, March 1st at 10:00 a.m. CT and are priced at $250, $150, $100, $75, and $40, not including applicable facility fees. Tickets will be available for purchase at Ticketmaster.com or in-person at the Alamodome Box Office, Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. CT.

Fans have been awaiting the return of the boxing sensation, Ryan “King Ry” Garcia, a skilled, lightning-fast puncher who has steadily climbed the ranks of the lightweight division. A big win against Tagoe, a top ten contender, would propel Garcia to the top of the division. Garcia has defeated tough contenders like “Ruthless” Romero Duno, Francisco Fonseca, Carlos “The Solution” Morales, and Jason “La Maravilla” Velez. Garcia was last seen in a spectacular seventh-round stoppage of 2012 Olympic gold medalist, Luke Campbell.

“I am excited and motivated to be back in the ring finally. I’m ready to do something special and give the fans a show they will never forget,” said Ryan Garcia. “I always want to make sure I give all my fans something memorable every time I fight.”

Emmanuel “The Gameboy” Tagoe, from Accra, Ghana, has accumulated various titles since his professional debut in 2004, including the IBF International, WBA International, and WBO Africa lightweight titles. The 32-year-old is currently ranked #10 by the WBC in the lightweight division and has risen in the division’s ranks since his U.S. boxing debut in 2013 with a ninth-round stoppage of Gerardo Robles on ESPN2. His last outing came on November 27th, 2020, when Tagoe met former WBO NABO champion Mason Menard in a 10-round lightweight contest, defeating Menard via majority decision with scores of 98-82, 97-73, and 95-95.

“I have always wanted a fight against Ryan Garcia. It’s a dream come true for me to be the main event in such an important fight,” said Emmanuel Tagoe. “I am grateful to my manager, Peter Kahn, and promoter, Lou DiBella, for providing me with this opportunity. Thank you to Golden Boy Promotions for finally getting this fight done. This is the second time I will be fighting on DAZN, and I will use this opportunity to show myself off to the world. All of the pressure is on Ryan. I am going to make Ghana proud, and everyone will know who Emmanuel ‘Game Boy’ Tagoe is after April 9th in San Antonio.”

“Fans have been anticipating the grand return of Ryan Garcia to the ring,” said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman, and CEO of Golden Boy. “Ryan has captivated the sport with his incredible speed and power, and on April 9th, fans will get to see a big Texas showdown at the historic Alamodome. Emmanuel Tagoe is a top 10 lightweight contender, so this will be a challenging fight for Ryan. I can guarantee that April 9th will be a night fans will remember as Ryan’s Grand Return to boxing.”

“It’s great for boxing that Ryan Garcia is returning to the ring and, after a significant layoff, Ryan is taking on a legitimate top ten contender,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “Emmanuel Tagoe has won 32 fights in a row, is hungry, and is one of the top boxing talents from Ghana. A hungry Ghanaian contender is a dangerous opponent, and the world is going to see it on April 9th.”

“Ryan Garcia is fast becoming one of the biggest names in the sport, and we are thrilled to see him return April 9th against a very tough competitor in Emmanuel Tagoe,” said Ed Breeze, EVP Rights, DAZN. “Ryan has already made a huge statement in the highly competitive lightweight division, and we look forward to broadcasting this can't-miss event live and exclusively worldwide as part of a completely stacked spring boxing schedule on DAZN.”

“We are excited to host this wonderful matchup and to welcome back Golden Boy Promotions to the City of San Antonio and the iconic Alamodome.” said Stephen Zito, General Manager of the Alamodome.

So he’s not fighting Farmer,

He’s not fighting Rolly, even though the WBA tried to get the fight re-done.

Tagoe isn’t the worst opponent, also considering Garcia hasn’t fought in 13 months.

Biggest hype job in boxing. Like Eubank JR, he looks great fighting pads and speed balls. One of the top guys in the division wipe the floor with him.

press conference quotes

Below are what the attendees had to say today:

RYAN GARCIA, LIGHTWEIGHT CONTENDER:

“I’m very excited, it’s been a long time. Tagoe is a legitimate contender, I have nothing but respect for him. He has a big opportunity here, he’s been looking for a tough fight, a fight that will make or break him; and I am looking forward to a dog fight if it happens to be one.

“I am definitely not looking past him, whether people think he is a good contender or not, and I respect him and I know this will be a good fight.

“I have been boxing my whole life. I know what it takes. I know the discipline you need, the sacrifices you have to make. What makes me feel confident is all the experience I have in the ring; over 200 amateur fights, 21 professional, been in some top training camps. I feel very comfortable and confident. I know whomever is in front of me, it will not be easy, that’s for sure. If it’s a quick or a long fight, I am ready for whatever.”

EMMANUEL TAGOE, LIGHTWEIGHT CONTENDER:

“I want to thank my promoter Lou DiBella and manager Peter Khan for giving me this opportunity to showcase myself to everyone. I know people don’t know me, but after this fight, people are going to ask, who is this guy!?

“I know Ryan Garcia, I respect him a lot as a good boxer but he is not my style.”

OSCAR DE LA HOYA, CHAIRMAN AND CEO OF GOLDEN BOY:

“For Tageo, to lose his professional debut and have an undefeated record after that for many years, shows that he has tasted defeat but he doesn’t want to taste it again which makes him very very dangerous.

“Ryan has been off for 15 months and we are glad that he is back. He is healthy, he is ready to go, but he knows that this is not a walk in the park.

“Ghana has some amazing boxing history with Azumah Nelson and Ike Quartey. I know it’s going to be a really good fight. I know both guys are going to be ready, both guys are going to get into the ring with nothing to lose and with everything to lose. If there is someone who knows fighters like to Tageo, it’s me. I can see it in his eyes.”

JOE MARKOWSKI, DAZN EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT:

“Ryan is a longtime DAZN fighter who moves the needle in a way that many fighters don’t. We applaud your bravery for speaking about your struggles, and we are delighted you are healthy and ready to fight on DAZN

“Ryan starts off some amazing content on DAZN, this fight is not going to be a walk in the park. My friend Lou DiBella has been talking to me about Emmanuel Tagoe for some time. Those of you that know Lou, when he talks you have to listen. But he has been talking about this matchup for a while and we are excited to be hosting it.”

SPECIAL STATEMENT FROM LOU DIBELLA, PRESIDENT OF DIBELLA ENTERTAINMENT:

“Hi everyone. Ryan Garcia is one of boxing’s most talented young stars and it’s good for the sport to have him back. I want to commend Ryan on his candor and mental health advocacy. I think his honesty will help a lot of people in battling the stigma associated with mental health care. I want to thank Ryan and Golden Boy Promotions for giving Emmanuel Tagoe, yet another talented, hungry fighter from Ghana, an opportunity to show his talents on the world stage. With Ryan’s immense popularity, he and his promoter could have come back against anyone. In Tagoe, they chose a legitimate and dangerous contender, who has won his last 32 fights. Emmanuel isn’t an easy touch; he’s a real threat. I applaud Ryan and Golden Boy Promotions for seeking this kind of challenge and I look forward to a great fight on April 9.”

Gabriel Rosado-Shane Mosley Jr. Eyed For April 9 DAZN Card Topped By Garcia-Tagoe

Two veteran boxers in need of a win will meet at the crossroads.

Boxing Scene has learned that plans are in place for a middleweight clash between Gabriel Rosado and Shane Mosley Jr. The bout will serve in supporting capacity to the return of top lightweight contender Ryan Garcia, who faces Ghana’s Emmanuel Tagoe atop an April 9 show from Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Rosado and Mosley are both coming off competitive losses in their previous fights.

Philadelphia’s Rosado (26-14-1, 15KOs)—who now lives in Los Angeles and trains in Hollywood—came up short in a spirited twelve-round slugfest with former WBO junior middleweight champ and current middleweight contender Jaime Munguia (39-0, 31KOs) last November at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. The hard-fought defeat came five months after a career-resurrecting third-round knockout of unbeaten Bektemir Melikuziev last June in El Paso, Texas.

The fight with Mosley will mark his sixth to air on DAZN, along with one other bout taking place on the non-televised undercard of a DAZN show. The 36-year-old former title challenger has remained a fan favorite during a 16-plus year career known for his willingness to accept any opponent with few questions asked.

Mosley (17-4, 10KOs) has not fought since a disputed ten-round, majority decision defeat to Ireland’s Jason Quigley last May 29 in Las Vegas. It was a bitter pill to swallow for the second-generation boxer, as Quigley went on to challenge for the WBO middleweight title in his next fight.

The defeat snapped a steady run for Mosley, whose father Shane Sr. is a Hall of Fame-elected former three-division champion. The younger Mosley claimed a fifth-round stoppage of Cristian Olivas last February in Indio, California, his fourth straight win after dropping a ten-round decision to Brandon Adams in the season five finale of ‘The Contender’ in November 2018.

Rosado-Mosley comes as part of a card that will see Victorville, California’s Garcia (21-0, 18KOs) fight for the first time since an off-the-canvas, seventh-round knockout of England’s Luke Campbell last January.

The 15-month stretch between fights included a mental health reset for Garcia along with physical rehabilitation following surgery to repair his injured right wrist. The fight with Tagoe (32-1, 15KOs) will mark his first under new head trainer Joe Goossen following his recent split from two-time and reigning Trainer of the Year Eddy Reynoso.

Anyone got any thoughts on taego?

Hardly seem h fight so was looking at his record. At a glance it was awfully, but then O had a bit closer look and it's not as bad.

The MD that concerned me was actually probably a clear win looking at famcoring, he was just away in America.

He has 1basicaly shut out a few decent guys (not good but not complete mugs.)

And his only loss he was knocked out on debut at the age of 15... (Allegedly)

If his listed age is corret then I think this is an ok comeback fight, not as good as everyone wants but decent enough for being inactive, new trainer ect. Your basically undefeated if your only loss is at 15...

ive seen him box a few times. decently quick and slick. better than the typical ghanian brought over, but i dont think he offers much at this level.

has very little power too. tagoe is the only guy to beat menard not to get a stoppage, and menard got iced in 2 in his next fight by an 11 fight prospect. tagoe clearly won that fight and it shouldnt have been an md, though he did drop some rounds

i dont mind it for a comeback fight to shake off some rust before taking on a tougher challenge next. tagoe might be able to do some tricky surviving for little while and be a bit pesky, but it doesn't interest me and i probably wont watch
