Manners has really upset Tony Booth with his story telling.

He did a few IFL interviews whilst in the bubble, one saying Booth only lasted one day sparring Calzaghe. Booth hit back on Fb....They boxed a draw in Leeds years ago, and Manners is from Leeds.... they don’t get along. Tony did five days down there but on the last day Enzo phoned him to say Joe had a cold so he got the train home. He was gutted as he never got his days wages and wrote the story in his book. Joe paid him when Tony had a dinner show in Hull years later.

Any idea where I can get a copy of his book, Mick?

It’s sold out. He’s doing a reprint or an updated one adding all his prison days and promotions.

Is Booth's book a good read? I've often thought these 100 losses type journeymen would have a good story to tell.

Yes. He’s not your average journeyman. He had more wins as well than any active British boxer at the time, too. His documentary he did on Setanta is on YouTube, he’s a crazy man.

Always remember Tony Booth engaging me in conversation after the Tommy Coyle v Martin Gethin fight...he was absolutely legless and I’ve no idea what he was trying to say to me, but he’d obviously had a great night!

Porky Russ mentioned big Sykes in a recent clip about his time in Hull prison. He was known for lurking around the landings , knocking guys out before dragging them into his cell to bum them.

Anyone on this forum who’ve been in jail ? If so how common is that in UK prisons ?

Graham Brett had a notorious pro fight with a fella by the name of Charlie Coke at the Bloomsbury Crest Hotel in the early 1980s. I cannot remember the circumstances of the fight but I remember Harry Mullan going on about it, although Harry went on about a lot of things. I will have to dig out the issue.

Great clip.

You can imagine afterwards Langdale saying to his mates why the fook did you start calling him a fat barstard ?

Looking at Langdales record I didn't realise he lost twice to Boxrecs very own Lee Kellet

Going back a few years but Kellet posts with Howard Daley - and their subsequent fight that ended in a draw, was good at the time

It's not common and it's only rumoured with Sykes.

Like in normal life, if you are gay you are gay, folk who think jail is some big centre for gay rape are deluded.
I don't think you are more likely to be raped inside than outside.

How did Sykes end up sparring with Holmes? Was he a paid sparring partner or was it just an exhibition type thing where Holmes took on all comers? I've only seen the one photo.

I've actually answered my own post earlier in the thread, Coco. Referee Roy Francis let it go on far too long, with Brett taking a beating.

Larry came to London in June 1978, three weeks after his thrilling world title win over Ken Norton. I have no idea why he came over and he posed with Sykes at a press conference. Maybe Holmes was en route to Spain because his first challenger was Spain's Alfredo Evangelista.
