Manny Goodall, who promoted Sykes, banned Boxing News when he read the preview of Paul's nothing fight with an African fella by the name of Lisimo Obutobe in Blackpool in October 1978. Obutobe was based in Europe but the meagre number of wins on his record came against men who, to this day, remain a complete mystery so BN listed the recognisable names, such as Lucien Rodriguez, Jean Pierre Coopman, Rudi Gauwe and Alfredo Evangelista - all of whom had stopped Obutobe. This enraged Goodall, who also accused Boxing News of southern bias because on the same night as Sykes-Obutobe, John L. Gardner took on Billy Aird for the vacant British heavyweight title at the Albert Hall and BN previewed the 15-rounder in the length it deserved. Harry Mullan wrote the preview himself. (Harry had a soft spot for Aird but overdid it when he tipped him to beat the rapidly improving Gardner, who pummelled Aird and forced him to retire at the end of the fifth round, cut over both eyes.)
How Goodall could compare the Sykes-Obutobe eight-rounder to a British title encounter is beyond me. Sykes stopped Obutobe in six rounds but the ban did him a favour next time out when, by all accounts, he looked lucky to take a 10-round decision over American Conrad Tooker in Wakefield. Then Sykes was mauled in six rounds by Gardner at Wembley and it was all over for his title aspirations and all over for Goodall, who went back to promoting dinner shows in Bradford.

I don't know what he did. Kids from rough estates in Hull with their dad serving a long time in prison don't generally get into England's third best uni. Unless it's quite common around your way.

The percentage of 18 year olds going to university has been increasing for quite some time; In fact in 2019 50% of 18 year olds went to university; and more than a fifth of these were from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Whilst Tony may not have been the best role model for his children, its a good guess that his childrens mother was.

Both my children lived on a council estate for part of their childhood; both went to university. So to answer your question - i`d say kids off council estates going to university is quite common.

I'm guessing they went to oxford or cambridge, as did all your neighbours. Anyone on here who is familiar with Hull will tell you its extremely rare in certain areas.

Mine went to Cardiff University actually (another Russell group university as Durham). No idea about all my neighbours sorry.

As your boxing views and opinions, your views on universities and those attending from disadvantaged backgrounds is similarly blinkered and uninformed.
White working class males are the least likely group to attend university - I`d argue that is because their white working class parents share the same views and opinions on attending university as yourself.

Exeter isn’t that highly ranked, is it? I know it’s Russell Group but didn’t think it was even top 10 tbh.

Russell Group is an odd one. A network of around 10 universities, but if you want to get into the financial industry it's essential to either go to one or a university ranked consistently in the top ten. I'd agree Durham is a tough one to get in. Usually you are looking at A* A* A on most courses.

I went to Cardiff Uni which is Russell Group, shocking to see it down at 38th place on that first link. Was easily top 20 when I was there.
