Oscar Rivas vs. Evgeny Romanov - Agreement Reached

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Press Release

Today’s scheduled World Boxing Council (WBC) purse bid has been avoided as Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM) announces an agreement has been reached with Titov Promotions, which promotes undefeated mandatory challenger Evgeny Romanov (16-0, 11 KOs), of Russia, for WBC Bridgerweight World Champion Oscar “Kaboom” Rivas’ first title defense.

Under this agreement, GYM obtained the rights to promote Rivas' first WBC defense. "We are very happy with this outcome," GYM President Yvon Michel said. "I would like to thank Mr. Alex Titov for his co-operation. We intend to hold this world championship in June, in Montreal or possibly in Colombia, where discussions are currently taking place. It was important for us that Oscar defends his crown in a familiar environment.”

Trained by Marc Ramsey, Rivas captured the WBC World title last October 22, winning a unanimous decision over Ryan Rozicki (13-1, 13 KOs) at the Olympia in Montreal.

Colombia-native Rivas, who represented his country at the 2008 Olympics, became the first WBC World Champion in the history of the Bridgerweight Division. Romanov, for his part, became the mandatory contender by virtue of his 12-round dominance over compatriot Dmitry Kudryashov (24-5, 23 KOs) last May in Khimki, Russia. Romanov had an excellent amateur career, even registering a knockout victory over Deontay Wilder, the future WBC World Heavyweight Champion, in an international tournament.

“I am happy to be able to defend my WBC bridgerweight belt in familiar terrain and quickly," Rivas commented. “I intend to keep this belt for a long time. In addition, whether my promoter GYM has obtained the rights to promote in my adopted city, Montreal, or in my native country, Colombia, I feel confident and surrounded by the best. It helps me stay focused on my goals."

If Rivas looks as bad as he did in his last fight he is going to sleep.
The guy looked drained and was struggling with a club fighter who normaly weighs 185 to 195.
Rivas had better come prepared

Yeah, if not that joke belt on the line, it would be a nice HW matchup. Rivas is more likely to win, he looks faster and more explosive. Romanov has performed regular so far. However, it's a close call.

Any fight that takes place at Bridget could have just been made at heavyweight.. but these guys are chasing the belt now.

Without the belt these fights would not have been made. Well done from the WBC. As soon as they move this division to 210 and the Cw one to 190 it will be mission accomplished.

Good matchup. Winner could be a top 15 heavyweight. Rivas the much higher-rated fighter on paper. But Romanov hasn't been very thoroughly tested yet, and there's no telling just how underrated he is.

Romanov has been ruled out of the fight, well it won't be sanctioned by the WBC, however he keeps his mandatory status.

If this isnt Babic swoop time what is. Rivas has looked awful lately and its a "world championship"... surely eddie is thinking this could be a fun fight potential. if rivas is a shadow of himself Babic should get flogged, but what else are you waiting for?

Babic or Rozanski are the only legitimate alternatives. Most of the other ranked "Bridgerweights" with a recognisable name haven't even fought at that weight.

ah rozanski. The polish babic, forgot about him. If babic could just manage to beat rivas, then roz would be a fun first defence.... These guys would lose to euro levle cruisers... so the divs a bit of a joke, but if it makes fun fights i gues mabeeey.
