Carl Williams was indeed over the hill but in the same paragraph you point to a 40 year old Pulev as a notable win for AJ?

Takam is just a journeyman, not sure why he's there.
Takam might be a journeyman, although I did forget Parker but anyway I'll ask again name next one fighter WHEN THEY FOUGHT FRANK that Bruno won that woukd have beaten Takam. So I dont mean the McCall who kod Lewis, but the McCall who had been in and out of mental institutions and cried into the ring. Likewise it's not the Carl Williams who ran Holmes close.

I'll never call Lewis victory over McCall a good win because practically any heavyweight would have beaten that McCall
McCall would have beaten Takam the night he lost to Bruno. Unless you think the non-puncher Takam had something to hold McCall off.

You seem to be confusing Bruno/McCall with Lewis/McCall 2?

Also, Coetzee would beat Takam. Again, it's not like Takam is poleaxing anyone in the first. Coetzee looked the same as ever versus Tillis before Bruno.
Ami I getting them mixed up?

Go to 13:44 - to quote Ian Darke "He's crying like a baby on his way to the ring". and then he does a sprint - erratic behaviour to say the least - he was mentally fucked.

Stu, he cried on his way to the ring in 1994 versus Lennox Lewis too -- his best performance.

Yeah it was the Lewis rematch where he capitulated to a breakdown. He wasn’t the cleverest against Bruno, but against Lewis (2) he became only dangerous to himself.

McCall of course did outpoint the ageing Holmes in the fight to Bruno, where he was a bit flat but did come through okay in the end. Much later handling Sinan Şamil Sam, who bounced Danny Williams off the canvas many times. It may not have been vintage McCall against Bruno, but I don’t think domestic level fighters such as Williams and Skelton would have won that fight.

based on losing handily but gamely to joe frazier, bugner also rates above them all (these dudes actually claimed this in the bh section lolz). i guess by extension ringo bonevena is better than any hw to debut in the last 30 years too!

cleveland williams even rates over tyson fury :yay:
On another of your meandering tangents again, "bruh"? Surprised Jack Johnson wasn't mentioned.

Again, what wins did Joshua have that were bigger than beating McCall and Coetzee? Remember, wins over senior citizens don't count.
Also, who did Bruno lose to that was as bad as Andy Ruiz?
No tangents please. Come on bruh, lets have the names.

I think we’ve established that the McCall win was decent enough. Considering McCall’s iron chin, I think it must be fair to say the best Joshua could expect would be a slightly wider points win. I suppose at worst Joshua might have cracked under pressure if McCall hadn’t been stung early as he was against Bruno. I don’t think it would be a match Joshua would have relished and possibly he may have collapsed mentally and been stopped if he wasn’t totally focused.

…but the Coetzee fight was nothing really. He was totally done.

The Ruiz question one is a bit weird. I suppose the slightly basic but strong Bonecrusher Smith would have been outpointed. Similarly tubby and skilled Tony Tubbs turned that trick at his peak.

Coetzee looked good in his previous fight versus Tillis. Have you seen it? He was far from done.

I just don't share your confidence in Joshua's chin. He's been decked, hurt and wobbled too many times for me to confidently back him against an 80s Bonecrusher Smith, who for all his limitations clearly possessed KO power.

Even at the time nobody was particularly amazed by Bruno running over the South African. Coetzee was the type of opponent Mike Tyson would have done in about 60 seconds without breaking a sweat.

The other South African fighter, Pierre Coetzer makes for an interesting yardstick. Outwardly it looks like Bruno beat him in a similar number of rounds to Foreman and Bowe. But you can see a bit more about levels in boxing from watching the fights. Foreman and Bowe really beat down Coetzer. From memory the Bruno effort was less emphatic and as per the Carl Williams fight, a friendly British ref lends a hand by jumping to award the stoppage.

It was a big surprise at the time that Bruno beat Coetzee so easily. Coatzee was still a ranked contender. He had never lost so badly before. Not saying that Coetzee was some legend or anything like that. Neither was Bruno for that matter. He was certainly in the same league as Tyson, Bowe, Lewis, or Holyfield. He did have some ability though.

It was nice win for Bruno.

There was footage of a sad looking moustached Coetzee getting his plane back to South Africa after the fight. It was the end of the line, apart from a silly comeback effort 11 or so years later. I guess in terms of level, I guess he was Frans Botha without the ambition to fight on endlessly.

He was a higher level fighter than Frans Botha. Both couldn't break an egg. Coetzee had good power and was a better all around fighter.

Coetzee was head and shoulders above Botha. The eye test tells you that, as do the results. Silly comparison.

I don’t think he was head and shoulders above. Frans did have some unorthodox skills. Good enough to beat Schulz, even if they gave a split draw in Germany. I think he probably would decision Coetzee. The only South African heavy that appeared eye catching good was Corrie, and he really couldn’t be bothered to train. I think he preferred golf!

mccall was a crack addict who was accordingly hot and cold. beating him is good, but nothing really all that amazing. tony tucker and orlin norris beat young olli too, which by your standards puts them ahead of anyone to box at heavy in the last 2 decades or so lol. coetzee was a strong fighter but hardly some type of elite fighter that simply hasnt been around plenty over the last decade. he'd been ko'd 2 fights earlier and retired right after, he was at the end of his line

mccall + coetzee is not nearly as impressive as you're ranking it, and josh has a much deeper body of work than bruno. even just usign the younger guys aj beat like parker + whyte it's close, then there' wlad, povetkin (olympic champs), and plenty others

Those were the biggest names that he beat, but really are minor factors when rating him.

What "defining wins" do these guys have? There are some nice wins but nothing that really leaps out at you.

Being competitive with Joe Frazier is more impressive than what anyone else has ever done.

Guessing you never saw Tony Tucker fight; he was before you time.
AJ beat Parker and White? Wow. He beat the 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist in 2017. Incredible. And Povetkin was just 39, when AJ fought him. Lets not forget going 1-1 vs Ruiz. What a career.

We should start rating Shannon Briggs among the greats for beating Foreman.
