Fighters who were gifted a world title?

Post by Glass Joe »

After last night where Jonas got surved a world title on a plate what other examples were fighters gifted a world title?

Shannon Courtenay against Ebanie Bridges, could had been the other way round.
Lennox Lewis being handed the WBC title.
Junior Witter getting a pretty easy vacant WBC title shot against DeMarcus Corley

Khan himself was gifted an opportunity he didn't deserve coming off the defeat to Prescott.

Joshua had his bought for him by Matchroom.

Do you mean fighters who were gifted the title when really they weren't good enough to beat a reigning champion ?

Lewis wasn't exactly gifted the title ,he was more than capable of beating anyonone at the time and had just destroyed Ruddock, whereas Courtney is crap.Witter was on an excellent run when he picked up his title and was very capable

Of course Lewis was gifted him a world title, they phoned him up and informed him he was a champion without fighting for a vacant world title.

I thought the post meant picked up a title when not capable of beating a champion ?

Ok but Jonas proved in the past she wasn't good enough anyway without the gift,Lewis on the other hand was elite

Of course Lewis was elite but he was given his first world title without having to win it in the ring.

If we're counting WBO as world champs, virtually all British WBO world champions bar Naz. Collins had failed twice at real world titles, Eubank never even tried etc. Lots of these examples.

Herbie Hide is perhaps the definitive one. 'Two time champion' despite beating two corpses and defending successfully only against cans. Bowe and Vitali demonstrated how out of his depth he was at championship level.

Him and Tucker should have been for the vacant belt.

Being made champ in a boardroom is a bad look.

Enzo Macarinelli against Marcelo Dominguez (was for the interim but he was upgraded afterwards).

Nathan Cleverly against Nadjib Mohammedi.

Billy Joe Saunders against Shefat Isufi.

FW was always great getting vacant title shots against crap opponents.

Ricky Burns against Michele Di Rocco.

Yeh notably he’d had to have fought the next available.

You don’t just get given a belt, unless you’re already the interim.

He did have one or two fights before going up to 140 and challenging for the belt.

But he did BEAT the champion.

I always think, had Fury not had to lose the IBF or any of his belt, then Martin wouldn’t have fought for the vacant belt, which was then gifted to him after His opponent broke his leg. Then who knows if Matchroom would have pushed it and if AJ’s career would have been so much more different.

Glazkov was favourite.

When Martin won, he basically called out AJ and sold his belt for the $6m he received.

A very good business move.

Unfortunate for Zepeda who have injured his shoulder so early on. Look at what he’s done since.

Well Larry Holmes, Aaron Pryor, Donald Curry and Marvin Hagler were all gifted their IBF titles.
But I'd hardly call them undeserving

Lewis was gifted his title but who's fault was that? He wanted bowe and confronted bowe at his title win against holyfield but bowe decided to bin the belt,Lewis was worthy of that title and his resume and title defences can confirm this.
Look at Bruno he was gifted his wbc knowing that whoever he fights after that the title ain't gonna be his after it.
Same as Jonas, whoever she fights next is taking that title
