Guillermo Rigondeaux vs. Vincent Astrolabio - February 26, 2022

Rigondeaux vs. Astrolabio in Play For February 26 in Dubai

Filipino Vincent "Asero" Astrolabio, a fighter who trains in the Manny Pacquiao Boxing Gym, has a very tough mission ahead of him.

Plans are taking shape for the Astrolabio to face former world champion and complicated southpaw veteran "The Jackal" Guillermo Rigondeaux on Saturday, Feb 26, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Can Astrolabio pull off the big win? His long-time coach, the experienced Nonoy Neri of Davao ’s MP Boxing Gym, says yes.

The hard-swinging General Santos City native, Astrolabio (16-3, 12 KO's), gets the biggest break in his pro boxing career when he battles the crafty Cuban 2-time Olympic gold medalist at Dubai's Marina.

Their 12-rounder would be for the vacant WBC International bantamweight belt – jointly promoted by Phuc An Nguyen in association with Brico Santig of the Highland Boxing Team – and the bout has already been approved by Mauro Betti, who is Vice President of the WBC as well as chairman of the WBC International Committee.

"Astrolabio is much younger, has a power punch and a big heart," said MP Boxing Gym coach Nonoy Neri, the man who together with Freddie Roach and Buboy Fernandez helped train Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao.

Rigondeaux clearly outclassed and outsmarted the brilliant “Filipino Flash” Nonito Donaire, not an easy thing to do; but he did, and we all remember that.

But that was nearly 9 years ago.

However, even though some of his fights have been suffocatingly boring – such as his split decision loss to John Riel Casimero last August – Rigondeaux's boxing ability is undeniably top-notch.

But at 41, Rigondeaux (20-2, 13 KO’s), is far from his prime.

The Cuban stylist confirmed that he's training hard for the fight.

"We're back and we're coming with a lot of enthusiasm, you know my thing is boxing," said Rigondeaux to George Ebro. "I don't know where this new chapter in my career is going to take me, but I'm excited and I'm training very hard for this fight."

Rigondeaux Vows To Bounce Back in Dubai, Get Himself Back in The Mix

Former world champion Guillermo Rigondeaux continues to train for a planned return next month.

The Cuban veteran will face Vincent “Acero” Astrolabio on February 26 in Dubai, as part of a series of boxing cards in the United Arab Emirates.

At just 24 years old, Filipino slugger Astrolabio is a man who has spent most of his career in the native land, with a couple of trips to China and Indonesia, but this would be his best opportunity to show himself against a veteran with such a long history as Rigondeaux.

“We know that this is a fighter from the Philippines and we are going to be ready,” Rigondeaux told George Ebro. “We are already in full preparation to reach that commitment in the best possible way. Whoever it is, we are going to return with victory and with hope of what may come in the future."

Born in General Santos, Astrolabio (16-3, 12 KO) faces a very complicated task against the two-time Olympic champion, a man with tremendous experience and ample skills from a defensive point of view.

Rigondeaux had his best moment when he beat an immense Nonito Donaire in 2013 - but a few months ago he lost by way of a split decision against John Riel Casimero.

"All that is history and now we look ahead," added Rigondeaux, 41 years old. “Anyone who steps into the ring with me knows that things are not going to be easy. With me you have to have all your senses alert, because the Jackal can spring a surprise at any moment."

At the moment, Rigondeaux is preparing in the Mundo Boxing gym at Tropical Park under the orders of Professor Pedro Díaz, with whom he has worked with on previous occasions and with whom he had his most resounding victory against Donaire, who at that time was recognized as one of the best boxers of the moment.

"Having Guillermo with us is a privilege," Diaz said. “He knows that he will always have the doors open in Mundo Boxing. Seeing him train allows us to perceive the kind of athlete he is, how he maintains himself and takes care of himself. We think he still has a lot left in boxing."

Herrera vs. Lausa For WBA Asia Belt on Rigondeaux-Astrolabio Card

In a battle of unbeaten 130-pound warriors, Filipino "Demolition Man" Jenel Lausa is all systems go for his tough battle against former Cuban amateur standout Jadier Herrera for the vacant WBA Asia South super featherweight strap - on Saturday, February 26, at the Marina in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

"The clash has been confirmed by the WBA Asia head office in Seoul, Korea," says fight co-promoter Brico Santig of the Highland Boxing Team.

A victory in “The City of Gold” Dubai could propel the winner for more thrilling and rewarding missions later in the year, as well as a possible inclusion in the WBA world rankings.

For the Filipino Lausa, the battle will be his first fight outside of his native land. With stakes high, the fight could be the perfect stage for the Manny Pacquiao compatriot to showcase his fighting spirit and caliber, a real booster to his career.

However, even though Lausa (10-0-1, 6 KO's) has kept himself in the gym, daily training and sweating, he hasn't climbed into the ring since his last combat in Digos City, Davao del Sur, Philippines, in September of 2019.

In that latest clash nearly 2 and half years ago, Lausa repeatedly floored and subsequently stopped in five chapters brave East Timor journeyman Carlos Lopez (28-11, 8 KO's).

Herrera might the toughest, most difficult foe whom Jenel has faced so far in his 7-year pro boxing career.

In sharp contrast, Herrera has kept himself super busy in complete and constant fighting mode, being far more active than the tough Pinoy super featherweight.

Point in case: during 2021, the 19-year-old Herrera (5-0, 5 KO's), born in the beautiful Camaguey in Central Cuba, fought intense amateur and pro clashes.

In April of 2021, he competed in the 60 kilos weight-class at the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships in Kielce, Poland, making it to the quarter finals.

Herrera did not win any medal in Poland, but learned valuable fighting experience.

Then last July he turned pro, kicking off his professional career in the spectacular city of Dubai, where he is currently living, training and fighting, handled by promoter Phuc An Nguyen.

As a result, during the last 6 months Herrera has fought 5 times, winning all those wars by way of knockout, including a round four stoppage win over veteran Filipino warrior Eduardo Mancito (18-13-2, 9 KO's).

This interesting collision between Lausa and Herrera is the co-feature for the international card headlined by Filipino bantamweight Vincent "Asero" Astrolabio (16-3, 12 KO's) taking on former world champion Guillermo "El Chacal" Rigondeaux (20-2, 13 KO's) for the WBC International strap.

Rigondeaux: I Don't Think I Have a Long Road Ahead, I'll Continue As Long As I Can

“We will be showcasing Cuban boxing in Dubai. We are going to be the ambassadors for Cuban boxing,” Rigondeaux told Khaleej Times.

“I don’t know much about [Astrolabio], but I know that he is a strong boxer and we are going to put on a good show on February 26. I just arrived here in Dubai [on Tuesday], but my preparations [for the Feb 26 fight] has been 100 percent at Miami.”

“I have obtained all the titles in boxing and I don’t think I have a long road ahead. But I am going to continue as long as I can,” Rigondeaux said. “My family and my discipline. My family is my biggest motivation.

“I think for young boxers, it’s very important to find a good team, a team that they can count on. And, of course, we have come from Cuba. All the good Cuban boxers are here [for People’s Fighters event]. They can come and train with us!”

LIVE Undercard Results From Dubai

The Rigolution travels to Dubai, as Guillermo Rigondeaux is set for his next fight.

Miami's Rigondeaux (20-2, 13KOs)—a two-time Olympic Gold medalist and former lineal junior featherweight champ originally from Santiago de Cuba, Cuba— remains at bantamweight, where he faces Philippines Vincent Astrolabio in a scheduled 12-round regional title fight. The bout headlines an eight-fight card taking place Saturday evening (local time) at Dubai Marina in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

The show is streamed live on the YouTube channel of event promoter People's Fighter.

UNDERCARD RESULTS

Jean Junior Messi Elime overcame a stiff challenge from Uganda's Ali Sserunkuma to earn a sixth-round stoppage in an entertaining junior welterweight affair. Messi Elime (5-0, 3KOs) closed the show in style, flooring Sserunkuma (1-1-1, 0KOs) with a left hook. Sserunkuma beat the count but was deemed unfit to continue by the referee who halted the contest at 0:55 of round six.

Messi Elime turned pro last February in his native Cameroon before relocating to Dubai, where has spent his past four fights.

Dayan Gonzalez made quick work of Egypt's Mostafa Elhamy (1-1, 0KOs), scoring a first-round knockout in the opening bout on the live stream. The brief affair saw Gonzalez (3-0, 2KOs)—a Cuban junior lightweight now based out of Dubai—immediately take the fight to Elhamy, rocking the Egyptian with an overhand right before a left hook to the body forced the full ten count midway through the first round. The official time was not announced.

Rigo got dropped and lost a close decision.

All three judges scored the contest 95-94 in favor of Astrolabio, whose eighth round knockdown of Rigondeaux provided the margin of victory.

He may as well retire now.
