Womens professional boxing -

Post by rhino222 »

I dont want this to sound sexist. But the talent pool seems to be very thin indeed. There just are not enough female fighters to have world champions in all of the sanctioning bodies.

From where im sat, and im happy to be proven wrong......

But im half thinking that anyone who is a reasonable athlete and had a modicum of skill could actually be a world champion. Some of the world title challengers are very very weak indeed and even lack the basic fundamental boxing skills that should be in place before a boxing board of control actually lets you have a pro licence. There are exceptions of course.

I thought the mens rankings were a bit drained on occasions but the female ones take the biscuit.

Yeah I agree though the talent pool will increase. If you've got a big girl put her in at light heavy where there are only 8 ranked women

Only 4 of them have wins. Any woman could turn pro and be top 10 the second the bell rings.

All jokes aside, it's not going to happen overnight and there are a few female boxers out there who can box and are a much higher level to those of a few years ago. Not everyone has to watch all the fights but I imagine most people on here will at a minimum watch the highlights of Taylor/Serrano which is more than they would have done ten years ago for any female boxers.

I don't think it's sexist to suggest that the talent pool is thin - I don't think anyone would argue against that.

It's not the fault of the fighters that the sanctioning bodies create the titles - like the men's game, there's nobody stopping these greedy fuckers doing anything.

It's early days, as it once was for the males, and the quality should improve through time.

Call me "woke", but I'd rather watch the likes of Cameron, Marshall and Ryan that some male fighters as it stands.

Shannon Courtney can't claim to being a reasonable athlete or having a modicum of talent

I guess there is a grey area to what a "reasonable athlete" is. I know someone - when amateur female boxing was FIRST allowed in the UK (I believe Wales was the venue for the first amateur female boxing contest) - it was literally a year after that. Well this person was at the time Rugby for Wales (seniors) and also had a Welsh vest in athletics (long distance). She really put her heart into boxing, but I can assure you - while she was 10 stone - after two years of boxing (and she won her amateur contests) - Shannon Courtney would have boxed her ears off and made her look silly. You only need to see her training in the gym to know she is fit and works hard.

I think it is all about levels. Yes compared to the likes of Katie Taylor - there is no way we should be calling Shannon a world champion - and yes if Katie Taylor is the talent level you need to be a world champion then yes you are right on both the talent and the athletic ability. However to say she is isn't a "reasonable athlete" or doesn't have "any" talent is harsh. I think Rhino's original post was seem to imply if we could get a decent athlete from another sport and train her up for a short time she could be a world champion - maybe some of the champions I've not seen but not Shannon Courtney.

Exactly the same as if you got hold of an international Rugby Union centre (the best in the world) and trained him for 2 years in boxing - there is no way he would beat anyone in the British top 15, let alone a world class Middleweight. I think Rhino seemed to imply you could with women. As I said, I do not know the international talent pool, but Shannon Courtney would make any "fit" non boxer in her weight class look silly.

Obv I agree that international male athletes wouldn't slot into boxing with such little training.
Nevertheless Courtney has had very little boxing experience, apparently she only took it up as an obese adult with a drink problem. The Aussie chick has barely fought either and ran her to the wire.
So I do believe a naturally fit woman with a couple of years of experience would have every chance of beating Courtney and becoming world champ.

True what you say about Shannon's past she was obese and had a drink problem but you only need to look at her now and say she has transformed that - she is not obese now and clearly "reasonably athletic". Perhaps you can question her talent yes, but she isn't just a fatty they've taken from the streets anymore.

And yes, the same probably applies to Ebanie - again you can question her talent yes, but clearly she is athletic.

Both deserve respect for blooming working hard.

If the fights are competitive and there's a decent story behind the competitors then it's fine by me. But just the odd one on the bill.

Don't want to see 3 minute rounds. That's a disaster. If a woman gets seriously injured the sport will suffer.

My guess is they are paid less than the men and promoters love that and will pad out shows where they can.

It's total shite, mutton dressed as lamb. Even the much lauded K Taylor is shot to bits and nearly lost to that Kazakh last time and her fights are awful.

How Sky could think Marshall Shields is a PPV event and they have spunked millions on women's boxing from their budget. A 7 figure deal for Shields who nobody has interest in?

Hearn has also jumped on the bandwagon, but not because he actually thinks it's good but because hes a tight bastard and thinks he can sell it while paying them less.

Recent issues drive it home like that circus fight with Jonas for a "world title" with what seemed like a novice on a few days notice, after Jonas jumped up multiple weight classes at 37. Reflects bad on the sport.

Recent interview with Bimbo Bridges bragging about how much she could make doing Only fans/pornography only she's a teacher and there's fornicate all money in Boxing.

Can someone explain how this woman is a supposed role model for young girls/women? Or even children as a teacher. Shes a role model for girls in the same way that Katie Price is.

Women's professional boxing is fine with me, if girls wanna do it then good on em and i'm all for govt subsidies to help fund clubs and get more girls into the sport etc etc.

My problem is when it's foisted on me as a fan of men's boxing and ridiculously over excited commentators and pundits patronise me by trying to pretend that what I'm watching is of a similar quality to men's boxing.

From what I've seen so far it's utter gash.

The majority of fights are just 2 women slinging arm shots. The 2 minute rounds don't help either.

All this equality nonsense needs to stop. Why does everyone pussyfoot around scared to tell it how it really is?

The fact remains, if an all women card was put on, even the supposed top level women, they would struggle to sell tickets and not many would watch.

I don't believe women watch women's boxing, yet we have it forced upon us whether we want it or not.

Same with every presenter these days. All In the name of being "inclusive"

I hate 2022. I want the 70's back, where you could smoke on a bus, slap an arse and watch boxing on terrestrial TV.

The serial killers had a great time in the 70's. You could get away with anything back then.

These days they won't even accept cash at some bars. Disgraceful.

I think it will get better if the talent pool increases. It would be far better still with 8 divisions and one belt in each, but having not been born by Caesarian, that is about as likely as me beating Luke Partridge

I'm definately not knocking them for their spirit, fighting is damn hard at whatever level. The Aussie has balls in abundance.
Nevertheless I am complaining about folk at this level being able to fight for world titles. It demonstrates that the level is lamentable.

I can't say I'm a major fan of it, there was one fight I saw months ago that was quite entertaining but on the whole I'd happily not bother. I'm all for having equal opportunities, the problem is there will never be a huge amount of women interested in boxing so the number of participants just won't be there.

I agree, but I would just question if we can say Courtney is not "reasonable athletic" and has "no talent". Its probably semantics here but for that would suggest that compared to the average population she is "just average". Again, not suggesting she can be compared with the likes of Taylor etc but both Shannon and Ebanie have had genuine easy wins.....so if they are not "reasonable athletes" with "no talent " what does it make those fighters they beat with ease....as I said its semantics but you cannot get lower than "no talent" yet these women who lost to them clearly are. If you said Bridges and Courtney were physically pretty fit with bang average ability I would agree.

I guess the test would be if they banned women's boxing, equal rights aside I don't think many boxing fans would really care, there would be uproar if they banned mens boxing.
