Mickey Walker
Mickey Walker
Only seen a few clips of this guy but have read up on some of his fights. His record is pretty amazing. Considering that he could go relatively competitively with a number of HWs I can only imagine that he was a monster of a welterweight.
How do the good people at Boxrec rate Walker at Welter?

......an all-time great. when he was in against schmeling..giving away height and reach against a good heavyweight he was taking a battering....so much so the max himself look to the referee to stop it...he just wouldn't quit..kept getting up an finally the fight was stopped .....i don't recall whether it was his corner that stopped it or the referee....i haven't watched this in a long time... but the courage and determination was strictly mickey .

Walker-Schmeling might be the greatest example of courage in boxing one can show on film. Walker, a natural middle, taking on a still prime ex-heavyweight champion and coming FORWARD despite repeatedly getting nailed with Sunday counter shots.Jaclem wrote:......an all-time great. when he was in against schmeling..giving away height and reach against a good heavyweight he was taking a battering....so much so the max himself look to the referee to stop it...he just wouldn't quit..kept getting up an finally the fight was stopped .....i don't recall whether it was his corner that stopped it or the referee....i haven't watched this in a long time... but the courage and determination was strictly mickey .
Re: Mickey Walker
Mickey fighting bigger guys was not an issue for the toy bulldog. He gave the much bigger Jack Sharkey hell in fighting him to a draw before fighting Schmeling. Plus you gotta love the fact that he was one of those type of guys who could start a brawl in an empty room.
Re: Mickey Walker
The way he went after LHW Mike McTigue while still only a welterweight was impressive. Then again if you didnt go after there wasnt going to be a fight.

Re: Mickey Walker
I rate Walker rather high on the p4p list. He kayoed many a heavyweight contender when he was really a blown up welterweight weighing less than 170 pounds while doing it. As a middleweight he was great, but not as great as say Tiger Flowers (who was robbed in a decision to Walker). As a welterweight he was also great. It makes me wonder how he would have did as a light heavyweight; with the Carpentier's, McTigue's, etc. in the field at that time.
Re: Mickey Walker
We know how he did against mctigue. He dominated him once in a nd fight and kod him in one round in another.

Re:
That assessment seems quite right. The great Mickey Walker was a hell of a fighter. Somewhere between 15th and 25th slots in the all time p4p rankings he should be in.Les Darcy wrote:I rank him higher at middleweight. He's a fighter for me that does better in the P4P rankings rather then in a single division. I rate him 8th at Welterweight, 6th at Middleweight and 18th P4P of all-time.
