I scored it for Calzaghe when I watched it live. Seeing the slo mo, it was obvious Calzaghe was missing loads and Hopkins landing clean. He landed a lot more clean punches than Joe.

Compubox must have been well out then as they had Joe landing 100 more punches than Hopkins.

Hopkins shots were bigger though. From memory I had Hopkins winning the fight but that was down to the quality of shots rather than the volume.

if hopkins landed more shots and a lot better shots, plus got a kd, doesnt sound like it was even close! what did you guys score it

hop i thought started well in the first 3, but was pretty much all downhill there and totally shelled up. he looked distraught at times in there and was getting bullied around. i thought the 115-112 and 116-111 were pretty much right

Interestingly all three judges had it razor tight which is how I view it. My scores have varied from actually agreeing with a draw to a Hearns win by 2. ... on a complete aside if Leonard didn't have Pepe Correra in his corner he would have won convincingly. Hearns was fucked for a few rounds after being hurt in the 5th but Leonard was too busy looking for the one punch. Had Angelo been in there I am sure he would have tactically got it much better.

I thought (upon replays - live I thought differently) the Calzaghe just nicked the Robin Reid fight - but then live I scored Kessler vs Calzaghe a draw.

And "here goes" Sven Ottke BASED ON THE REFS POINTS DEDUCTIONS beat Robin Reid. Now, I did not agree with those point deductions. General consensus seems to be that Reid won by about 5 irrespective of the ref - no, no chance. Reid would have won had there been no point deductions, but not by wide enough a cushion to have those point deductions.

In other "robbery" fights.

Beltran beat Burns
Dirrell beat Froch
Jones beat Johnny Nelson - the three above were CLEAR wins also.
Hopkins beat Calzaghe (yes I am in the minority on this forum I know)

And I will say - Klitchscko vs Fury was bloody close - no more than a round either way and the more I watch it the more I go did Fury do enough?
Hopkins did outland Calzaghe. It was one of those strange hard to score fights. I actually watched the whole thing on slo motion after. Joe missed a large amount of punches and Hopkins landed lots of clean counters. Popkins antics in the fight were very shameful however and I’m glad Calzaghe got the decision. He was far more up for a fight than Bernard.
Yes I know people throw the compubox numbers saying why JC won, but for me ring generalship was key and Hoplins seemed to have the last say in most exchanges. Yes Joe crawled it back but I thought Hopkins was a decent size winner. Yes I didn't like his tactics in the end but it's not the judges responsibility to dock points. A bit like when people defend Froch against Dirrell.

Genuine to this day felt that Hopkins lack of urgency and smothering tactics in the latter part of the fight were part due to Roach/Hopkins assuming they were in a commanding lead. Hopkins to this day thinks it was a schooling and Roach didnt even think it was close. The score card who had it Joe wide was a shocker. Given the kd and point deductions I fail to see how anyone can score it Joe wide
hopkins thought he was robbed vs chad dawson in the rematch too, won maybe 3 rounds in that. he constantly complained about pretty much everything in his career so par for the course. hopkins and roach would have to be truly delusiional to think they were miles ahead as well.......even most people who score it to him acknowledge it being close

he was tentative from like the 4th round too, way too early to be concluding he'd already won and could coast

so i dont buy any of that as supporting his case

Yup in real time. Guys sit and press buttons as the punches appear to them to land.

I scored it for Calzaghe and I really didn’t like Hopkins in the fight. I couldn’t really see how there were people saying Hopkins won. Then I came across a slow motion video of the fight and Calzaghe landed very little in his flurries ans Hopkins landed a lot and very cleanly.

Had it 4-2 Catterall at half way and all square after 10, with Josh winning the last two.

Have watched it back and haven't changed my mind BUT there were a hell of a lot of close rounds.

Question - which other fights where people have screamed robbery did you agree with the winner? I had Bradley beating Pacquiao too FWIW...!
Hello Stevie Wonder

Taylor lost by a mile. Corrupt ref/judge IJL had a nice brown envelope again I bet.

I can't remember exactly what I scored it but I thought it was dead close, I remember thinking 'robbery? What robbery?'

Saying that I also thought Canelo boxed well in the GGG rematch and was good value for the draw.

You're a better man than me if you sat through that fight more than once! At the time I had it to JC by a point, but life is too short to bother watching it again to see whether I've changed my mind or not.

I agree regarding Ward won vs Kovalev - it was close enough to warrant a rematch but I did not see the controvesy. I thought GGG nicked the rematch but must admit perhaps my scoring was swayed by fight one and GGG more definitively winning that one.

Also Floyd vs JC Castillo and also Maidana 1 - couldn't understand why the public desire for a rematch in either one. Only Floyd fight I could see a case for him losing was DLH.

Yeah as a major stroker of Joe I wasn’t comfortable watching that, he really struggled to land clean and sacrificed (even more than usual) in terms of punch technique given up for throwing a very fast combos
just basically spamming the target with volume. Yeah, spamming, I like it. I scored to Joe by one but you’ve got to know I’m scoring every close one his way.

Fvcked if I’m rewatching it mind, I’ll maybe give Ward Kov a bash later. That was another one i scored giving Ward a narrow win and all the close rounds IIRC

I’m was arguing heavily in favour of Calzaghe and someone linked me to the slow mo. Once I started I didn’t want to half ass it and stop.

Spamming the target is exactly what it looked like. He missed 3 out of 4 punches easily and old Hopkins would crack him either head or body on the way to falling in with the head and holding. Time and again.

And even the ones he landed were cuffing shots with no shoulder or hip through them really. If Hopkins was suffering it could only be from the pace IMO cos Joe for sure didn’t hurt him. Maybe got to him a tiny bit to the body but not that I’d remember

How did you have Ward / Kov mate?

errrrbody got ward winning it seems.......some good cross over with the ppl who had poppy winning. id say maybe it's a style thing (slick 'crafty' boxer type of thing) but ward and hop fought those fights very different. hopkins evasive and negative, ward taking it in close after kov got the better of outside boxing - eye of the storm type of thing there.

i can see ward by 1 point if you give him the benefit of the doubt, but for me hopkins defo didnt beat calzaghe. when you outwork a guy by 2-1 ratio and turn him into a shelled up crybaby for 9 of 12 rounds you dont have to be as accurate as him.

Horrible fight. Calzaghe is that fast and Hopkins that negative it looked like Joe almost chased him out the ring. It was a different fight in slow motion. Can’t watch them all like that tho 🥴

Yeah I take most of those points it’s just that even the shots Joe did land (my bias is to him not Hopkins) were just cuffing and or glancing, I mean he wasn’t throwing anything hard anyway in single shot terms, at that point in his career, but normally he was landing considerably more of them.

I don’t recall him landing shots that really shook Hopkins head.

Where Ward Kov is concerned I’m defo a candidate for just preferring Ward’s style. But with Joe-Hop I’m feeling like giving the benefit of the doubt in every close round to my man, Joe, *and he still just squeaked it*

It was a few years ago now, I can mostly remember being shocked by how many punches I thought Joe landed, missed. I’d say it was clear for Hopkins in terms of punches landed but he did run and spoil most of the fight. He landed a lot of head buts and forearms as well.

I don’t get stoned anymore so no way I could do it all again. I did have a look for the fight but I can’t see it In slow mo, although you can replay it like that in YouTube on any version. Pick a few rounds and have a go? Calzaghe is missing by cms most of the time. He must hit hard because Hopkins is bothered by what does land and Joe looks unfazed by much aside from the excellent knockdown punch.

Edit: I managed a couple of rounds. Crazy how much Joe misses.
