James Toney vs Vassiliy Jirov

This sweet science masterpiece by Toney will never get old. Although Jirov deserves a credit too, he was like a brainless fighting machine, relied on his dumbass corner and was working hard relentlessly. Yet Toney was perfect. Especially I love Roach's advice to put Jirov on his ass before the 12th and the trick in that round, when Toney pretended to be hurt, laid on the ropes, let Jirov work more and get opened, after what James followed Roach's instruction.

love how he keeps his tempo high, this one is quite close IIRC but the rematch (again IIRC) was something of a masterclass by Mitchell. great, great ring technician with one of the best engines I have ever seen.

It was a bit of a war if I remember right Tam but because I'm not going into detail these days with the old fights I can't remember exactly, Robinson tended to be in exciting fights for a non puncher and loved a scrap but Manfredy beat him quite handily from memory

Lockridge was a fantastic fighter.

He was, he folded Mayweather like a cheap deckchair

Cheers to CP for Mitchell-Lopez 2 coverage and Hands for flagging it.

A really fascinating fight with Mitchell giving a perfect example of tactics, supreme fitness and the jab doing the business.
Technically he's on point as well, Mitchell is pressing (he absolutely has to) but rarely getting tagged.

Fair play to Mitchell for his mental toughness.....literally did not have a friend in the house, very definition of the away fighter with a huge mountain to climb

He’s superb at this. He doesn’t look pretty but like say Usyk he has the skill of always doing *something* to control the tempo, with his footwork and feints and body movement when he isn’t using his fists. I’d love to have seen him against some of the real talents at the weight over the years, it would be fascinating to watch a Chavez or a Nelson try to impose their tempo on him, because it seems to me that imposing your game plan on Mitchell was very tough indeed

Always wanted to see that but never got round to it, how was it? I heard it was a pretty good fight for what it was - two auld sluggers way way past their prime.

It was decent enough to be fair, Coetzee dropped Barkley with a cuffing right hand in the 2nd but Barkley regrouped well enough, he rocked Coetzee with a left hook in the 10th which had him reeling and Barkley teeing off, if it was 2 young guns then you'd maybe say the ref stepped in a bit early but no complaints from Coetzee and just like that Iran Barkley was the new WBB Super Heavyweight champion of the world

I remember that fight. I think it was on ESPN. If I remember correctly, Coetzee started out pretty well in the early rounds, but then faded. It was weird seeing Barkley so big.
