George Foreman: Best win?

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Carrying on with my 'Best Win Series'..

Image

He had recorded 76 wins, with 44 KO's!

Record:

Had a record of 5-3 (4 KOs) in World Title fights.
Had a record of 6-4 (6 KOs) against former or current world titlists.

Which was his best and/or defining win?

What was his best KO win?

Some names that he has fought include:

Joe Frazier
Ken Norton
Ron Lyle
Dwight Muhammad Qawi
Gerry Cooney
Jimmy Ellis
Michael Moorer
Axel Schulz
Lou Savarese

--------------------
Another question..

Regardless of win/loss.. Who was his best opponent?

From the list above, this would include the likes of:

Muhammad Ali
Jimmy Young
Evander Holyfield
Tommy Morrison
Shannon Briggs

I'm hoping that you aren't being serious here.

Best ko win or career defining win? Tossup between Frazier and Lou Savarese.

Best opponent?
Tossup between Ali and Shannon Briggs.

Best KO Frazier and that’s his defining win. His come from behind KO of Ron Lyle is second.

Best fighter faced Ali, with Holyfield a close second.

And then his face straight after, he was like, "have I finally done it?"

looking around and then turning to his corner.

Best win? Frazier 1 or Moorer. Or Norton. :OhYes:

GF shocked the world in Jamaica. He showed it was no fluke against Norton, and Moorer speaks for itself.

Best opponent was Ali.

Can the OP explain why he included Jimmy Ellis in the list?

Does the OP know the difference between 60s Jimmy Ellis and 90s Jimmy Ellis?

They are different fighters altogether, the Ellis that Foreman fought was a white guy lol. I assume he meant Jimmy Young

Yeh, they were complete different boxers.. My error. I mentioned Jimmy Young on the lower lost, as he lost to him.

Don't read too much in the names I've written.

For example, his best KO, you might pick one from his earlier fights.

Best wins: Frazier, Lyle, Norton and Moorer. If I had to pick just one of those I'd say Moorer because it made history.
Best Opponent: Muhammad Ali

The Moorer fight made history because Foreman was so old. It is the answer for a great trivia question.
The Lyle fight was a fun fight to watch and showed that Foreman had a lot of heart.

The demolition of Frazier was the best win. Frazier was the best fighter he beat. No on else has a one sided victory over a great heavyweight like Frazier.
Obviously Ali was the best fighter he ever fought.

George Foreman defining fight: WTKO2 Joe Frazier...January 22, 1973...."Down Goes Frazuh!, Down Goes Frazuh!, "Down Goes Frazuh!"

Frazier went down 6 times!

Other great fights of George Foreman:

WTKO2 Ken Norton, LKO8 Muhammad Ali, WTKO5 Ron Lyle, WKO2 Gerry Cooney, L12 Evander Holyfield, and WKO10 Michael Moorer.

Foreman was also The Ring Fighter of the Year in 1973 and 1976.

Won his first 40 fights.
Olympic Gold Medalist.
Oldest heavyweight to win a piece of the heavyweight crown at 45 years of age.
Two-time world heavyweight champion.

Beat 2 out 3 hall of fame boxers.
Beat 4 out of 6 world champions.

Tremendous resume.

Given his age, Briggs, Savarese, Schulz, Coetzer, Stewart and Cooney are remarkable wins.

Briggs got the decision against Foreman and Savarese and Schulz only lost by SD and MD. The Schulz one was said by many to be the wrong call too, lots thought Schulz beat him.

The Briggs verdict was so outrageous the FBI launched an investigation. They were Marc Ratner's judges, last seen gifting Marc Ratner's Ray Mercer the win over Tim Witherspoon. Everyone knows Foreman beat Briggs.

Foreman beat Savarese. The Italian American judge gave it to the Italian American fighter. Everyone else, HBO, Boxing Digest, The Ring, Boxing Monthly, and Lou Savarese, said Foreman won.

Schulz I agree was a controversial one.

Always thought that during his 2nd career, his performance against Cooney might have been his best.

Surely showed that even after 10 years out, he came back and not like he was KO’d at all. Took Holyfield the distance.. and fought some prime boxers.

The Moorer fight looked suspect. The sudden drop like he got shot and the whole reaction after looked contrived. Also the fact that Moorer did not demand an immediate rematch and was later rewarded with another IBF shot. No disrespect to Foreman, he was a big moneymaker and Moorer was a boring dud as champ. Wouldn't be shocked if Moorer sold the belts and got a percentage of future Foreman title fights like the Louis-Braddock arrangement.

The facial swelling Foreman suffered from Stewart was incredible and brutal. It's the only fight Foreman ever was beat up like that.

The punch put his teeth through his mouthguard.
Moorer wasn't in a position to demand anything, it was seem as a gimme fight and Big George despite not being the champion was the main attraction.

Is Foreman's success in the late 80's and early 90s proof that the quality of boxers declined from the 70s? He didn't beat everyone nor did he fight everyone but he was one of the top guys around. I'm not so sure that version of him would be in the 70s though.
Does this then show how much it declined into the 2000s with how successful and competitive Holyfield was able to be into his 40s?

holyfield lost to every good opponent he faced in his 40s, in several cases hardly winning a round, many of his opponents during this time were already in their 40s themselves

getting schooled by the likes of sultan ibragimov isnt really proving much
