Re: Paul Sykes... where is he now?...
Well of course. I went to Wakey to stay over night with my son and his Mrs. Then did some shopping and called at Leeds to pick up my grandson from school. Had a very good day.
Re: Paul Sykes... where is he now?...
Sykes must have done a stint in a Liverpool jail because he linked up with the Maple Leaf amateur boxing club in the city in 1973 and went all the way to the ABA semi-finals where he was outscored by Birmingham's Garfield McEwan, who went on to win the heavyweight final with a decision over big Welshman Neville Meade. Sykes later stopped Meade in the pros, climbing off the floor to finish him in the fifth round for his greatest win.
I can remember chatting to Tommy Miller about Sykes at a dinner show in the 1980s. Tommy managed Sykes throughout his short professional career and said that Hull's useful Roger Tighe had been allowed into Wakefield prison to spar Sykes in the 1970s, so clearly the prison authorities did make an effort to rehabilitate Sykes. On his release, Sykes linked up with Miller, who took him to several gyms in the north for sparring and Sykes looked good against Phil Martin in Manchester, although Phil was just a light-heavyweight. Tommy said that Sykes had all the ability in the world but nobody could keep him in line, particularly after his defeat to John L. Gardner for British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles at Wembley in June 1979. The fight was screened 'live' by the BBC and the challenger's capitulation in the sixth round was seen by an awful lot of people.

Great effort, want to do the same one day. Have watched that documentary so many times, can nearly remember it word for word. Imagine being stuck in an enclosed space with someone like that.
Bit disappointed with the wording on there though. Could have been any of the following:
I knew what to do with sharks
Sometimes people get stuck in the groove
I did what every right thinking man would have done
I knew the rules, I helped write them

He seduced his wife when she was 13/14 and he was 30 something. He’s definitely suspect.high tower 1 wrote: ↑05 Mar 2022, 05:11 Someone on here mentioned Sykes doing security for saville. Wonder if he was a paedo too ??

Same people that state "I'd kill any peado if they came near me"
And hero worship a peado because he's a hardman

Re: Paul Sykes... where is he now?...
I lived literally yards from Sykes growing up on Lupset.
He wasn't respected or hero worshipped in any way on our estate. He was feared as a violent menace.
He was mostly in the nick when I was growing up. He was out for a while when I was about 16 to 19. Would always see him in the bars and clubs. Proper headcase
I will say this though, I saw him taking more hidings than he dished out. Usually groups of lads or doormen after he'd had a skinfull. Good enough for him, deserved everything he got.

Re: Paul Sykes... where is he now?...
That's true. The only people who worship him never met him. I saw him at a few shows in the early nineties and nobody wanted to be around him. Not because they were scared, because he was an absolute pissed up nuisance. I'm sorry MasterG, I couldn't have gone to his grave. There's an awful lot more deserving people than him on that cemetery.
Re: Paul Sykes... where is he now?...
I've never in any way said that I respect him or worship him. If he had never been a boxer I'd not have gone to his grave. I hate bullying and no way condone what he has done, so I'm not glorifying his behaviour. Karma came around on Sykes and he died a somewhat pathetic man. I respect any boxer and that's my reason I was there, also I was in the area of Wakefield. If I'm in any graveyard, I do tend to look over war graves and commonwealth graves too.mickey1975 wrote: ↑06 Mar 2022, 07:10 That's true. The only people who worship him never met him. Yes Mick there are a lot of more deserving graves in every cemetery but I don't have the information of who is buried there. I do see your point

It’s amazing how many people know the man. There must be at least 8 posters on this thread over the years who knew him personally.
None had anything good to say about him either !

Not quite as bad as "Here lies a soldier" on Lennie Murphy's grave like but still quite charitable

I’d probably visit his grave too for a pic. All my mates have watched the Sykes documentary and pissed ourselves laughing at him. He is a cult hero.

Didn't know him at all. Knew of him, and was unfortunate enough to be around him at times.high tower 1 wrote: ↑06 Mar 2022, 12:32 It’s amazing how many people know the man. There must be at least 8 posters on this thread over the years who knew him personally.

Re: Paul Sykes... where is he now?...
Let's me honest, all of these "hardmen" are actually bums. Just look at their pro careers
Paul Sykes - A joke who ran away in a fight and then got KO'd by a Nigerian BUM
Ronnie Kray - Lost to a 5-3 bum
Charlie Kray - Finished up with a BUMs 11-6 record
Cliff Field -- 11-4, 4 TKOs
Johnny Waldron - Did nothing, drew against bums like Bob Pollad (3-3-1) until losing to Dennis Andirews (9-2-1). He got a win over Poundshop Henry Cooper.
Lenny McClean - Too scared to even turn pro. Got KO'd by bums with the slightest bit of training (Field and Waldron)
At the end of the day, they're all bums who think they're tough because they knocked out a few people half their size on the street or someone pissed out their head.
Yet people idolise these clowns.
