Are Tyson Fury and Dillian Whyte playing mind games as WBC champion threatens retirement?

Post by Enlightened-One »

"Are Tyson Fury and Dillian Whyte playing mind games as WBC champion threatens retirement?"

The DAZN Boxing discussed Tyson Fury's claims that he would retire following his fight with Dillian Whyte.

The DAZN Boxing Show considered the effect of Dillian Whyte failing to turn up for his press conference with Tyson Fury.

Whyte has reportedly been unhappy with the terms of his deal to fight for the WBC world heavyweight championship and has largely been silent in recent weeks. He fights Fury on April 23rd at Wembley Stadium, and ahead of the clash it was Fury alone who sat in front of the press, without his rival.

Akin ‘Ak’ Reyes and Barak Bess considered the effect his absence might have had on the current champion.

Barak said, “That’s what silence does, sometimes, when people are waiting for a reaction. Fury does things for a reaction and gets under your skin. When you’re silent, it gets people wondering.

“Now I hear he’s holding out because he wants more money to promote the fight. This could be part of the mind games too.

"What I’m saying is, these kinds of mind games, all it did is just give Fury access to be the only one at the press conference, and centre of attention, which he loves anyway. I don’t think it bothers him.”

Ak saw Whyte’s decision as one that will have limited effect.

“At the end of the day these guys will share the squared circle,” he began.

“I don’t think him showing up makes any difference to how it plays out.

“I’m concerned [Fury’s] hinting at retirement. This whole country needs to see [Anthony] Joshua vs. Fury. That’s still a fight that everybody needs to see happen down the line even if it’s 2023.

"I don’t buy it, I think Fury continues to play mind games with the public.”

Thoughts?

Tyson Fury’s contract with Top Rank and ESPN expires after the completion of the Dillian Whyte fight.

‘The Gypsy King’ is probably using the “retirement” angle as a negotiation tactic to either negotiate a lucrative contract extension or to sign a huge deal with another promoter/network.

There are quite a few big fights that should compel Tyson to prolong his career (i.e. Joshua, Usyk, Joyce, Ruiz Jr. etc.).

We might even get to see Fury and Joshua signing a two-fight deal if Usyk is forced to remain inactive due to his current activities in the Ukraine.

And if the Dillian Whyte is very competitive, which I expect it to be, then Tyson has the option to engage in a highly-lucrative rematch.

I can’t imagine Fury walking away from the sport of boxing leaving so much money sat on the negotiating table.

I think he'll continue on a free agent. I think at the time he signed it, he needed that US deal. Arum was not going to work with him and have him on PPV without a multi fight deal.

Now, he is on good terms with Arum, he's worked with PBC before, Hearn would not hesitate to work with Fury no doubt.

He can do fight by fight basis, no cap on income.. Best way for well established boxers with commercial value. Let people fight for you.

You know anything about his contract with Queensberry EO?

Tyson Fury is only a few weeks away from the four-year anniversary of his contract with Queensberry, which was around the same date ‘The Gypsy King’ also announced his deal with BT Sports.

The precise terms of those deals were not disclosed.

There haven’t been any media announcements about those deals being extended. And boxing contracts relating to fighters rarely last more than four years.

So I’m assuming he might also be out-of-contract with those parties soon (immediately after the Whyte bout).

You could very well be proven right, Fury could choose to go down the Canelo route, by becoming a free agent that works with the highest-bidding network/promoter on a per-fight basis.

Many boxer are network free or even promotional free, which makes it easier to make fights of course. Some will want t be tied down.

But only the elite can demand top purses. The likes of Canelo/AJ/Fury.. They don't NEED TO be tied tot any contract at the moment.

I completely agree, remaining a free agent is the best move for most commercially popular fighters, unless some network offers an unrealistic sum to tie them down for multiple bouts (i.e. the $365m six-fight deal that Canelo initially signed with DAZN).

As much as I despise Fury's slick money extraction business model, and let's face it - it's been extremely successful so far, at least financially, and he, like most, certainly doesn't care for the good of the sport, he's certainly a master of the boxing mindgame.

Time and time again he seems to reduce his opponents to mindless tongue tied imbiciles. I was appalled at the way he reduced even an educated pugilist like Wlad to such mundane levels.

However, finally, Fury has some real opposition when it comes to mind games.

Dillian White can also let his tongue go when he needs, or he can do the opposite.

It's not only Fury that can keep his opposition fretting during camp whether he will show up on the night or whether he won't.

This diva like delicate game of brinksmanship can be a powerful psychological weapon and 2 can play it. Just as long as the promoters, the fans, the networks all know that they will show up on the night.

Usyk is the guy that will beat Fury, but I doubt it happens.

Fury is ducking AJ! He absolutely ducked AJ last year when he could have dropped the belt and fought AJ for maybe $100m more than what he earned for wilder 3. But he went for wilder instead.

Now he's talking about avoiding AJ again. Fury is a weirdo.

Or maybe Fury subconsciously knows he's shot and he's going to get brutalized by Whyte. They'll say the three wilder fights took it all out of him.

What makes you think Fury is shot?

And the whole point of the AJ fight was it was supposed to be undisputed.

I wish we got every combination of Tyson vs Holyfield vs Bowe vs Lewis in their primes. I also would hope that we would get every combination of Fury vs Joshua vs Usyk vs Wilder. Some people might act like the losers (Joshua and Wilder) are damaged goods and don't want to see them anyway. But it'd be great if those people would keep that opinion to themselves, because for real boxing fans, it would be great to get every combination of the elite four.

Well stated. I'm thankful that they are all still fighting, and don't care what combination we get.

Are you a young swedish fellow or maybe another clone of our trollfriend 655504034 or bandog?

Assuming option A I will tell you what's wrong with your logic. The verdict against Fury regarding the third DW fight wasn't about the WBC belt. It was about contractual obligations and Fury would have had to pay damages if he would have skippes the third fight. Any promoter making a fight against him with some other opponent would also have been wide open for litigation if this issue had not been settled.

Fury has not retired yet and AJ just lost his last fight and almost by Ko at that.

You need a really active imagination to claim that Fury is ducking AJ.
