Rigondeaux Recovering After Freak Accident at Home, Vision is Affected
Guillermo Rigondeaux faces a difficult battle to rescue what remains of his career in the ring.
The Cuban boxer suffered injuries to his face and both eyes, after suffering a domestic accident that kept him hospitalized until noon this Friday.
According to his manager Alex Bornote, Rigondeaux was cooking in his Miami home when a pressure cooker exploded in his face and affected his vision considerably, to the point that he is considered to only have a 20 percent of it, putting his future as a boxer on hold.
“It really is an unfortunate thing,” Bornote said to George Ebro. “When the pot exploded and we saw how Rigondeaux was left, we thought the worst, because his face and eyes looked very bad as a result of the impact of the explosion. But we hope that he recovers.
According to the manager, Rigondeaux underwent several eye tests to determine the depth of the injury, but initially they believe that only the retina was affected and, if confirmed, the tissue would regenerate on its own with full recovery of his vision. But if something more complicated is detected in the optic nerve or beyond the retina, Rigondeaux will require an operation and then the prognosis for his vision would be more reserved, so the tests in the next few hours will be vital for the two-time Olympic champion.
"In any case, this is a heavy blow for Rigondeaux, because we were already working on a next fight," Bornote added. "The important thing now is that he recovers his vision completely and later we will make a determination about his future."
This blow to Rigondeaux comes days after he returned from Dubai with a unanimous decision loss to young Filipino Vincent Astrolabio - a loss that already complicated the veteran's future in professional boxing, although he was confident of a quick return to action.

He had a great career but at 41 he won't be returning from this eye injury.
I wish him nothing but the best

Bad news. I hope he fully recovers, for the sake of his life after boxing.
I was a fan, but I think his career is over anyway. He had no business losing to the last guy.

should probably call it a day. a rematch with the pressure cooker is too risky, and fights with the frying pan or oven might not end well for him either.
he could comeback and fight chumps like the microwave, but what does that really accomplish?

chocking hazards with food, hot vegetal coocking oil splashing or pressure cooker explosion in the face, slipping on a wet floor/in the shower are almost deadly home hazard accidents.
It may look funny but it isn't at all.

We lost Judah vs Mosley due to a shower related accident if i recall correctly. While it may seem like a pleasant and safe time in private, the bathroom in your home is one of the most dangerous places you can be.apollo creed wrote: ↑07 Mar 2022, 02:07 chocking hazards with food, hot vegetal coocking oil spalshing or pressure cooker explosion in the face, slipping on a wet floor/in the shower are almost deadly home hazard accidents.

Re: Rigondeaux Recovering After Freak Accident at Home, Vision is Affected
Rigondeaux Should Make a Full Recovery, Says Team Doctor
The doctors who are treating him hope the Cuban boxer recovers all of his vision, because no major injuries were found in the cornea or in the macula of both eyes.
Rigondeaux, who suffered burns to his face and eyes when the pressure cooker exploded on Thursday night, is recovering at his Miami home after spending several hours in a hospital where he received first aid.
Osvaldo Nordelo, the main doctor who has been treating Rigondeaux for a decade, expressed a confident feeling in the boxer making a full recovery, without ruling out that he can return to boxing.
“I left his house and I can attest to Rigondeaux's tremendous improvement," commented Nordelo to George Ebro.
“It's not that he's lost so much of his vision, but it's more of his ability to withstand the intensity of lights. His cornea and macula were not broken, but they did suffer burns.”
According to Nordelo, the affected tissues generally regenerate relatively quickly and, if a mishap does not occur, Rigondeaux would recover one hundred percent of his vision, something that was of great concern to his family and team.
Rigondeaux, 41, was cooking black beans when something went wrong and the pressure cooker exploded, leaving him with two severely burned corneas and injuries to part of his face, but quick action by doctors at Kendall Regional Hospital averted further problems.
"In any case, this is a hard blow for Rigondeaux because we were already working on an upcoming fight in August," explained the manager of the Cuban boxer, Alex Bornote, to George Ebro.
"The important thing now is that he recovers his vision completely and later we will make a determination about his future."
This blow to Rigondeaux comes days after he returned from Dubai, where he suffered a unanimous decision loss to huge underdog Vincent Astrolabio.

I genuinely try not to spend too much time standing in front of my microwave or washing machine, just in case they do explode whilst on. Kitchens can be bloody dangerous places.

I agree. Thats why rubber bath mats and flip flops should be indispensable in a bathroom.chucktaylor wrote: ↑07 Mar 2022, 03:14We lost Judah vs Mosley due to a shower related accident if i recall correctly. The very first line in this article says "He's trying to save his career"
Nah f*ck all that, he's trying not to be blind for the rest of his f*cking life. Boxing's the least of his concerns right now I'd think.

You can get automatic ones that shut off when the pressure gets too high.Ruthless-RKO wrote: ↑08 Mar 2022, 13:02Feet. And a few other things.adislav123 wrote: ↑08 Mar 2022, 12:40 fvckin' pressure cookers! for what does one need that shit anyways?
A friend of mine had an accident with a pressure cooker when he was younger in Brasil, he got really out of it, and put the pressure cooker on to do some beans, then fell asleep.
It was one of the stovetop ones, and it eventually exploded, and when he woke up, there were firemen in his living room, who had broken down his door, and his curtains and some of the living room furniture also were on fire.
