Prefight I was wired for a good fight after rewatching Canelo/GGG 1 without scoring just to enjoy that fight, but then I lost the first round of Choc thanks to DAZN problems that have started to become irritatingly endemic. My major impressions are Martinez was grossly flat compared to his normal joyous exuberance taking it to his opponent. That he took a Great fight on short notice and couldn't even make the higher wt limit tells me his training was primarily weight loss, hence flat performance and affectations.
Punch Monkey numbers are for punch monkey fanboys. Dempsey, Marv, Big George, Flywt Manny, ain't gonna land 350 "body landed" power punches because poor Moe/Larry/Curly gonna be laid out 250 punches before then, I mean, what color koolaide you boys keep drinking, the purple slurple?
The lower divisions can be extremely competitive, but they lack the larger talent base of LW/W/M/LH/H. Choc always been basic forward plodder throwing a ton of arm punches that usually do the trick. Eats a lot of shots, and now over 50 fights, he's clearly past his best which is better than all not named Sor, but...
Martinez jumped on him at will thru the fight to drive him backwards, and after a few times of that, Choc started having blank blinking moments like he didn't know where he was before regrouping. Martinez never stayed on top for the finish, usually retreating back to ropes for a rest, ie his weight loss training focus clearly leaving him bereft of stamina in a step up fight where he needed it the most. Much is made over some vague drug issue with Eddie Reynosa being his trainer, but Eddie just the cut man for this, so while while he trains out of Eddie's fantastic gym, he like many have their own trainers. I've even seen ol'man Chepo still manning the corner of some lesser fighters.
I'd advise Martinez to stay in this division that I think he could dominate with proper camps. Very unusual dynamic style coupled with power reminds of a young Naseem without the showboating. Choc needs to retire. He seems to have had something of a tragic life, and being punch drunk shouldn't be a part of such a classy guy. Take the Estrada fight if he must for the $$$, and if he replicates this fight, he can retire a Hero going out on his terms.
And if I ever return to Mexico, the Reynosa gym is in a "favorable" part of Mexico that I'd enjoy. Maybe they let me spar Canelo...NOT
