How many more of the past/current heavies used steroids?

Post by yiddo14 »

Just been reading back on when Tommy Morrison admitted he used steroids back in the day.
Got me thinking about how many of the recent heavies have used steroids in the past,or indeed, still do?
V.Klitschko admitted using them in the past.
I see Mavroric on TV the other day,and he must only weigh 12 stone!!Thats about 4 stone lighter than in his fighting days!!
Even looking back at the likes of Riddick Bowe and Lennox Lewis(olympic final)I can't help but notice how much weight they went and put on once they turnt pro.Bowe in particular was like a rake when he fought Lewis in the olympics.
Even David Tua looked slender back in 92 olympics,I would have assumed this guy was always built like brick, but he was much, much lighter back in 92.

Hey,maybe it's me just being paranoid

Related to this, I find that from the late 1980s the average weight of the top heavyweights grows much quicker than the average height....

Hard to judge on the guys you gave us...

Mavroric has been effected by some bizzare wasting disease since his fight with Lewis.

I assume most of the weight gain with Lewis and Bowe are due to:

1. Simply getting older
2. Hitting the weights
3. Fighting less often in their pro careers than their amateur careers

If you injected some guy with steroids every day for six weeks, he isn't magically going to grow muscles or look like Hulk Hogan. Steroids allow the body to train harder than before. If Barry Bonds hadn't taken steroids before his home-run campaign, he wouldn't have been able to hit the gym nearly as hard.

It's working out that makes muscles, not steroids.
I understand that you can't start using steroids, sit around doing nothing and expect to get big, quick.
A couple of firends of mine are on them, and they say you still have to eat properly and train often.

Also,I was'nt aware that Mavrovic had some kind of muscle wasting disease!! That certainly explains his dramatic weight loss.

My feeling os that performance enhacing drugs of various kinds are rife throughout all sports, especially ones with such a huge earnings differential. Being a top 100 ranked tennis player affords you a decent life. Being a top 20 sprinter isn't going to make you rich...

A friend of mine who about 10 years ago was an olympic standard athlete in track & field told me at the time at least 75% of T&F athletes were on or had used steriods, growth hormones etc etc.

I'm not blaming the athletes or fighters. I understand why they do it, and, like Decagon says, they still have to train hard. The thing is you can't leapfrog to greatness, roids, etc, are not a shortcut to skill.
