Sergey Kovalev To Face Tervel Pulev On May 14; Site Expected To Be The Forum In Inglewood

Sergey Kovalev has a new opponent for what would be his first fight in 2½ years.

BS.com has learned that the former light heavyweight champion will battle undefeated Tervel Pulev in a 10-round cruiserweight fight set to headline a Triller Fight Club pay-per-view show May 14. The Forum in Inglewood, California, likely will be the site for the card that’ll feature Russia’s Kovalev (34-4-1, 29 KOs) and Bulgaria’s Pulev (16-0, 13 KOs), a younger brother of longtime heavyweight contender Kubrat Pulev.

Tervel Pulev is 39. Though undefeated, he is untested at the championship level.

Kovalev, who will turn 39 on April 2, has not fought since Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez knocked him out in the 11th round of what was a competitive WBO light heavyweight title fight in November 2019 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

The inactive Kovalev was supposed to face China’s Meng Fanlong in Triller Fight Club’s main event May 14, but Fanlong opted to box another former light heavyweight champion, Jean Pascal, in part because the Kovalev fight hadn’t been officially announced. Fanlong had agreed to fight Kovalev at a catch weight of 188 pounds, but he will oppose Pascal at a contracted weight of 175 pounds, the light heavyweight limit at or near which Fanlong has competed throughout his seven-year pro career.

Fanlong (17-0, 10 KOs) and Pascal (35-6-1, 20 KOs, 1 NC) will headline a card promoted by Probox on May 20 in Plant City, Florida.

Quebec’s Pascal will fight for the first time since he tested positive for four banned substances – Drostanolone, Drostanolone Metabolite and Epitrenbolone – late last spring. Failing tests for multiple performance-enhancing drugs caused Pascal’s removal from what was supposed to be a 12-round rematch with fellow former light heavyweight champion Badou Jack on the Floyd Mayweather-Logan Paul undercard last June 6 at the Miami Dolphins’ Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.

Now that he has a commitment from a new opponent, Kovalev can prepare for a long-awaited return that was initially scheduled to take place in January 2021.

Kovalev’s layoff continued because he, too, was removed from his DAZN main event versus then-unbeaten Uzbekistan native Bektemir Melikuziev (8-1, 6 KOs). The polarizing Kovalev couldn’t move forward with the Melikuziev match because he tested positive for synthetic testosterone.

What’s Tervel Pulev been up to since his loss to Usyk almost a decade ago in the amateurs?

He’s 39 years of age and it seems he hasn’t done anything meaningful since his twenties.

16 opponents beaten that had previously suffered a combined total of 182 losses at the time of their bouts against Pulev.

Those are Mark De Mori stats!

de mori's record is so bad, that he's even still topping tervel in this department , with a whopping 211 losses out of his last 16 fights at the time. these dudes need to step their games up if they want to match the dominator

Would you rather Kovalev have fought Meng?

It was probably easier getting Tervel seeing as his brother has both feet in the stroller door.

To be honest, I don’t really know what I want from Kovalev.

He clearly wants to score a highlight-reel KO over a low-risk unbeaten opponent, possessing a superficially-impressive resume, in order to rebuild his “fearsome” reputation.

I just want people to appreciate the fighters he’s recently attempted to orchestrate bouts against weren’t that good, despite the fact they were unbeaten.

When Andre Ward stopped Krusher, we saw the Russian attempting to rebuild his “fearsome” reputation against the padded resume owning Vyacheslav Shabranskyy and Igor Mikhalkin.

It seems that history keeps repeating itself, but no one else is paying attention.

Kovalev is a zero beater.
He smacks that zero right out of the L column.
He saw the Anthony Yarde zero and beat it.
Elieder of the Alvarez clan had his zero beat down by Kov.
Blake Caparillo, Cedric Agnew, Nathan Cleverly all got their zero spanked by Kov.
Pulev will be the next to lose the zero to Kov :yay:

Kubrat Pulev Vs Fedosov might be one to keep half an eye on on this card. Pulev is nearly 41 and hasn't boxed since 2020. Fedosov on the other hand is coming off a fairly decent upset win in Majidov and then Dawejko a few years before that.

*Dos Santos. Not sure. He's just signed a contract with Eagle FC (Khabib's MMA promotion). Wouldn't be surprised if Triller was not being completely honest with JDS or perhaps he just preferred staying in MMA.

Press Release

Triller announced its Trillerverz 5, ‘Lineage of Greatness’ event, which will occur at the Forum in Los Angeles on Saturday, May 14, 2022, and be streamed live on FITE worldwide via PPV or the TrillerVerz Subscription on FITE. It will also be available on all major cable and satellite via iNDemand and commercial locations from Joe Hand Promotions.

The full Fight Club card includes:

SERGEY KOVALEV VS. TERVEL PULEV (10 Rounds / Cruiserweight) - Kovalev last fought on competitive terms with the current #1 Pound-for-Pound Fighter in the World, ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, before getting stopped in the 11th round. His illustrious career includes victories over Bernard Hopkins, Eleider Alvarez, Jean-Pascal (twice), and Isaac Chilemba.

The heavy-handed Pulev, the 2012 Bronze Medalist at the Olympic Games, the younger brother of two-time heavyweight world title challenger Kubrat Pulev, returns to the ring following a knockout victory of Vikapita Meroro on July 29, 2021. He is currently the holder of the WBA International Cruiserweight Title.

Also on the card, Kubrat ‘The Cobra’ Pulev (28-2, 14 KOs) will clash with Andrey Fedosov (32-3, 26 KOs) over ten scheduled heavyweight rounds. Pulev is returning to action after a first-round knockout of Frank Mir on November 27, 2021, at the first-ever Triad Combat Event in Arlington, TX. Pulev has defeated numerous heavyweight boxing contenders, including Samuel Peter, Hughie Fury, Dereck Chisora, Tony Thompson, Alexsandr Ustinov, and Alexander Dimitrenko. His only losses have come to Heavyweight World Champions, Wladimir Klitschko and Anthony Joshua.

From Hollywood, FL, the heavy-handed Fedosov is coming off a show-stopping first-round knockout of Mahammadrasul Majidov on April 17, 2021. It was Fedosov’s eighth victory in a row, seventh by knockout.

Also featured on the undercard, Son of a Legend, Evan ‘Yung Holy’ Holyfield (9-0, 6 KOs), will compete in a scheduled six-rounder in the junior middleweight division. He is the son of Three-Time Heavyweight World Champion Evander ‘The Real Deal’ Holyfield.

Rounding out the card, The Fernando Vargas Dynasty continues with the professional debut of Seven-Time Amateur Champion, lightweight Emiliano ‘El General’ Vargas. He will be joining his highly regarded and undefeated brothers on the card, junior middleweight Fernando ‘El Feroz’ Vargas, Jr. (5-0, 5 KOs) and Amado ‘El Malvado’ Vargas (3-0, 2 KOs), competing in the featherweight division. They are the sons of three-time junior middleweight world champion Fernando ‘El Feroz’ Vargas. All three bouts will take place over four rounds.

Sergey Kovalev: I Can Show That The Krusher Is Back, I'm Excited To Win Title At Cruiserweight

Sergey Kovalev will end a 924-day hiatus when he makes his return to the ring May 14 to fight Tervel Pulev while headlining a Triller Fight Club pay-per-view event at The Forum in Los Angeles.

The subject carrying the most weight for Kovalev (34-4-1) surrounds around the former light heavyweight kingpin making his cruiserweight division debut against Pulev (16-0, 13 KOs) in a 10-round contest.

“I'm really happy to be back in the boxing world because I didn't fight for a long time,” said Kovalev. “I miss fighting. I'm interested in what I can do in the next division where I can fight without losing weight. I'm excited and ready to go win the next title [at cruiserweight].

“Now I won't be losing weight, and my power punches will be the same -- what I did usually. Boxing the last couple of years at light heavyweight was not comfortable for me. Right now I am happy to move up and use my power for victories. I can show May 14 that the Krusher is back.”

Kovalev will turn 39 years old in April. He last fought in November 2019 and suffered a knockout loss to Canelo Alvarez in a competitive fight while earning a reported career-high $12 million payday and dropping his WBO light heavyweight title along the way.

His career has been further stalled ever since.

Kovalev was supposed to fight Sullivan Barrera on April 25, 2020, but the announced bout was canceled due to the onset of the pandemic caused by COVID-19. Another Kovalev bout was announced against Bektemir Melikuziev for Jan. 30, 2021, but the fight was canceled due to a more serious issue when Kovalev tested positive for a banned substance.

Setbacks aside, Kovalev is looking to compete in a weight class in which he can weigh up to 200 pounds.

“Everything is going well. I am doing the same that I have always done. But now I have more energy, more food, more everything. I am happier. I'm excited to move up a division and interested in what I can do,” Kovalev said while smiling ear to ear.

Kovalev will need to reassert himself in order to crusade as a two-division champion. He is 4-4 since 2016, including back-to-back defeats to Hall of Fame fighter Andre Ward in 2016 and 2017, as well as Eleider Alvarez in 2018.

Kovalev redeemed himself against Alvarez with a unanimous decision win in 2019 to regain his title and survived deep waters against Anthony Yarde later that year to eventually set himself up for a shot against Alvarez.

He later admitted that fighting three times that year took a toll on his body.

Pulev will not present the same resistance and world-class pedigree Kovalev is used to, but it will be a test nonetheless to work off ring rust for the Russian.

“The fight will show who is the best,” said Kovalev. “I cannot wait right now. Let's just wait. I don't have any secrets. When I come inside of the ring, I am going to be doing my job – the same as I have been doing since I was 11 years old.”

The Bulgarian boxer Pulev is the younger brother of Kubrat Pulev, who will also be fighting on the card against Andrey Fedosov. Tervel is a 2012 Olympics bronze medalist but has been largely untested throughout his six-year pro career.

“I think it's going to be a very difficult fight because Kovalev is a world-class boxer. But I believe in myself. I'm also a tough guy,” said Pulev. “The key to the victory will be who is better prepared.”

Pulev last fought in January 2021 and scored a ninth-round TKO win against Vikapita Meroro in Tanzania.

The PPV event will be available for purchase via FITE for $29.99.
