Jermall Charlo vs. Jaime Munguia - June / July 2022

Post by Ruthless-RKO »

Jermall Charlo vs Jaime Munguia in talks for June or July - By Patrick L. Stumberg

Munguia had been negotiating with Janibek Alimkhanuly for a WBO interim title fight

Though he’s got an interim title fight with Janibek Alimkhanuly on the table, Jaime Munguia is still exploring his options. ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez, confirming earlier reporting from Keith Idec, brings word that Munguia is in talks to challenge Jermall Charlo for the WBC title in June or July.

Munguia (39-0, 31 KO) was technically supposed to face Carlos Adames in a final eliminator after Adames upset Sergiy Derevyanchenko in December, but there’s nothing stopping Charlo (32-0, 22 KO) from taking the fight as a mandatory defense. Well, there is that felony assault charge, but when has something like that slowed a champion down?

This would be Munguia’s fastest route to the title, and the thought of him and Charlo beating the living piss out of each other is more than a little tantalizing.

As for Alimkhanuly, the offer would presumably go to #3 Chris Eubank Jr., which would be another very interesting clash of styles. Not sure how Adames would proceed; the easy thing to do would be to just name him the mandatory challenger, but the WBC could instead go down their rankings and order him to face...#3 Chris Eubank Jr.

Okay, maybe #4 oh wait that’s Alimkhanuly again.

Honestly, I’m looking forward to that clusterf*ck as much as I am the ensuing fights.

I hope I'm wrong, but I predict Munguia rejects both Charlo and Janibek fights, and waits on 40 yr old GGG. I think Adams, who upset Derevenchenko, would be a good fight too.

Waiting on GGG would be a dumb move from the Munguia camp.

If GGG had any intention of fighting Munguia it already would have happened.
Plus GGG is already booked for 2022.

Personal opinion: Munguia won't accept fights against Charlo or Alimkhanuly. Jaime would very likely jump at the chance to fight the likes of Golovkin, Eubank Jr. or Murata though.

I agree. I would look forward to him vs Mall Charlo. Tough fight, but would make good money, plus it's an immediate title shot.

I think it will be Munguia and his team who will avoid this fight. He can fight bums for 2 or 3 years because he is young. But Charlo is in his 30s and waiting at least one year for Canelo paycheck is pretty long. He should definitely look for some career defining fight

Charlito rejected potentially career defining fights against Andrade and Benavidez. :OhYes:

When did Charlo reject the Benavidez fight? I always thought it was the other way around.

• February 2021 - “I campaign at 160. David Benavidez is at 168,” said Jermall Charlo on social media. “I want to fight the mother f****, meet up somewhere. I’m with it.”

• March 2021 - David Benavidez: “I never said anything about Jermall Charlo. The only thing I said was I’d like to get a fight with him, and then he did an interview and said he’ll knock me out and break my neck.

“He wants to do a catchweight. I didn’t say I was going to do a catchweight. I didn’t say I was going to go down.”
Benavidez said.

And Showtime's boss, Stephen Espinoza, has only just tweeted the following:

What do you think apollo creed? Do you believe that Andrade's never rejected bouts against lots of top-ten world-rated fighters? :OhYes:

Stephen Espinoza is clearly claiming that Showtime offered Andrade the Jermall Charlo bout during late 2019, but Boo Boo rejected that opportunity.

I love this fight. Hats off to Munguia for taking a huge step up in competition. Some may think since Munguia destroyed a guy Mall struggled with, it's his to lose, but I favor Charlo in this one. (hopefully he stays out of jail)

Lets hope Charlito doesn't avoid/turn down the fight with Munguia , like he did with Andrade. :OhYes:

Take the fight and sign the contract Charlito! :OhYes: :box:

Charlo wins this easy, every fight I have seen of Muniga which is maybe three of them, he never really has to worry about his opponents punching power so he gets to operate how he wants, this would be completely different I go Charlo by TKO.

I wonder sometimes if Munguia is disciplined enough to get to the elite level. He struggles making weight, and doesn't look cut or ripped like it was a super struggle. Time to lay off the burritos?

did you see charlo's last fight, where he had a tough 12 round decision vs a guy munguia destroyed in 2 rounds

True. I think Charlo is declining as a fighter. His last fight in 2021 was vs Montiel in a 12 round unimpressive win by Charlito. Munguia KO'ed Montiel in 2 rounds and also he's in good shape.

I guess Charlito's plan was to get a big fight with Canelo and since it didn't work it out, then Munguia seemed a good option to cash in.

I hope Charlito doesn't quacks out from this fight and he signs that contract. :OhYes:

On the other hand, Munguia was in tough fight with Hogan. Charlo just outclassed him. This is 50:50 fight

Yeah, true. Charlito doesn't want to risk his 0. Mung has much better options like GGG and Canelo! :TU:
