Ron Stander Passes at 77

Post by oogiebe »

What always comes to mind when I hear Ron Stander's name is the picture of him the day after the Frazier fight. All swollen and full of stiches.

But he was a real tough man with a hard punch. The kind of fighter that mostly goes unheralded but essential to the sport we all love so much.

RIP Ron.

The man was an off the wall underdog when he got his shot at Frazier, even his own wife made the comment: "You don't drive a Volkswagen in the Indianapolis 500," when she was asked her husband's chances.

But he had a tremendous heart and did pretty damn good when you consider he was basically a part-time fighter. A lot of guys from that era were not full-time fighters like Chuck Wepner.

Jesus Christ Almighty God bless his family :TU:

Irritates me when I read the stories of the Shaw fight. However it is usually also noted that Stander had broken ribs at the time. Stander was a tough, tough fella.

the shaw fight was most likely a fix. Ron knew the game and how it was played
