Round-by-Round: Michael Conlan vs. Leigh Wood - 12 March 2022

Re: Round-by-Round: Michael Conlan vs. Leigh Wood - 12 March 2022
I listened to the fight on the radio and Ronald's hickory dickory dock commentary was bizarre but I also heard this from Steve Bunce sat next to him.
End of the fifth round.
-Ronald McIntosh "...let's see if we can head to the red corner and listen in to the instructions from Adam Booth..."
-Booth heard saying "nice deep breaths" a couple of times and something else that's inaudible.
-A few seconds without any voices.
-Bunce "Ha. You've gotta love that. D'you know what Adam's doing?...He's gurning...He's mouthing the words so that you can't hear them out here but Leigh (sic) can see them. So he's actually talking to him...silently, yeah. That's really smart. That's absolutely brilliant. So we're not picking up on it."
(All the while that Bunce was talking somebody that probably is Adam Booth can be heard talking in the background.)
What masterplan could Booth have been trying to keep underwraps from 'Scoop' Bunce? Are lip-reading boxers about to take over the boxing world?

bunce is a weirdo
Re: Round-by-Round: Michael Conlan vs. Leigh Wood - 12 March 2022
Disappointing that Bellew believes there is an automatic 10-8 round. This is how these kinds of myths spread and get established. If he thought Conlon won the round apart from the KD, it's 10-10.
Amazing courage from both fighters - hope they are both OK long-term as this kind of fight puts some serious miles on the clock.
Re: Round-by-Round: Michael Conlan vs. Leigh Wood - 12 March 2022
Good post. This is why Bellend, and others on Skysports or DAZN, can't be taken seriously when they are getting hysterical about a close decision.
Or the round could be scored 10 - 9 sometimes, rather than 10 - 8.

Re: Round-by-Round: Michael Conlan vs. Leigh Wood - 12 March 2022
100% agreed on your first point. On your last point, 10-9 is only correct if the round would have been 10-10 without the KD (is that what you meant?).

Re: Round-by-Round: Michael Conlan vs. Leigh Wood - 12 March 2022
A lot of people (including muself) had round 5 of AJ-Klit 10-9 to AJ rather than 10-8..
I think that's the right way..
Some websites had it 9-9 but that's not following the 10 point must system.
Re: Round-by-Round: Michael Conlan vs. Leigh Wood - 12 March 2022
I had Conlan winning the first round 10-9 because all the way through it was Wood landing, and only in the closing seconds Conlan scored the KD.

I thought the round was close enough to give it a 10-8 to Conlan. I thought Wood was edging the round but it wasn’t like he was winning it wide for me.
It’s interesting to see how people score things differently.

Yeah - for what it’s worth I rewatched the fight as I didn’t score it first time around and had Conlan 3 up going into the last.KiwiRider wrote: ↑15 Mar 2022, 15:53maverick23 wrote: ↑15 Mar 2022, 15:22I thought the round was close enough to give it a 10-8 to Conlan. It’s interesting to see how people score things differently.but if the two of us scored a 12 round, I would not expect there to be more than 2 points difference. Not like the Taylor fight.
I think I had Catterall 4 up against Taylor at the end of that one.

Generally I am within a point of BS.com and their rbr. Dunno why, but when I check it is either the same or within one point.

Yeah - I’m never a million miles away either from the BS card. I usually check it out as soon as a fight finishes to see if it’s matching what I’ve been seeing or not.
Re: Round-by-Round: Michael Conlan vs. Leigh Wood - 12 March 2022
Really enjoyed Leigh Wood’s improvements. Obvious as well. Going from exciting defeat to Dickens, to stunning victory over Conlan. And from gassing vs McDonnell, to dominating Xu. One thing in common is these were all exciting or even thrilling fights.
Well done to the man. Really has settled as a pro. And found a way. Love the British featherweights - feel they’re our bread and butter. We always do pretty well at this weight.
Conlan had that looks you see in many talented or decorated amateur fighters. Relying on speed, winging shots in. Burning loads of energy with flashy punches (although he showed good variety, going from head to body). Wasn’t quite sustainable over the length of a pro fight although looks great in particular to the untrained eye.. Ultimately the steady pro was able to grind him down. I saw Conlan fading in the 11th, KD or not. And obviously folding in the 12th.
A few too many excuses for Conlan. If he had landed the big shot earlier. If the knockdown call in the 11th hadn’t made him over anxious in the 12th. If he had more 12 rounders before this…if you can find too many reasons for a loss, it’s an excuse and no longer a reason. Leigh Wood has found his success the hard way and Conlan has the same opportunity to.

i thought mick boxed really well, maybe gassed a little after the 2nd when he couldnt get wood out, i had mick by 4rds , tho wood is tough man and landed a sweet ko, and with that power you will feel you can have it with anyone, i think mick wins a rematch

Mick will always be the superior boxer.

Wood with a Ferrari inside a gated property. I assume both belong to him.
Who knew that a regular WBA paid so well.

He probably has a few wealthy mates now he's flavour of the month.

olij999 , yep just expanding on your point about the scoring of a round with a knockdown. A knockdown doesn't automatically mean a 10-8 score. It has to judged in the context of the whole round.

I don't believe Conlan can get through 12 rounds with Leigh. He's going to get KO'd at some stage every time.

ya id pick a rematch to unfold similarly, conlan doing well early but wood gets to him eventually. by the end of the fight it was a close one anywayTheLeprechaun wrote: ↑20 Mar 2022, 23:31 I don't believe Conlan can get through 12 rounds with Leigh. He's going to get KO'd at some stage every time.

Re: Round-by-Round: Michael Conlan vs. Leigh Wood - 12 March 2022
I reckon Groves could have beat Froch fairly easily if he came in with the same tactics he used vs Eubank or Degale. Constant backfoot and trying to nick the fight. From early interviews in his career it was clear that he thought he'd destroy Froch. Can't really blame him when you see how many punches Froch takes cleanly and Groves was a banger. He just couldn't accept that Froch was too tough for him. So I think Conlan has no chance just purely based on his style and there is nothing he can do imo because he already fights in a negative way whereas I think Groves just didn't fight negatively against Froch and should have. I bet he has moments where he really kicks himself for losing those fights and realizes he should have used different tactics. Getting KO'd in front of 80,000 in a fight you should have won must eat at you. Hate to say it but if he has Booth in the corner I reckon he beats Froch back then.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑21 Mar 2022, 00:10ya id pick a rematch to unfold similarly, conlan doing well early but wood gets to him eventually. by the end of the fight it was a close one anywayTheLeprechaun wrote: ↑20 Mar 2022, 23:31 I don't believe Conlan can get through 12 rounds with Leigh.
