Mark Potter

Post by rhino222 »

The shocking news has been circulated on the www (Instagram) that Mark has a big fight on his hands after being diagnosed with cancer of the stomach. Worse news is that it has spread to his back and his bones. Mark noticed issues with his mobility in January and his alert wife pressed the right buttons for Mark to get an accelerated scan through the NHS and various other tests and these confirmed the worst.

Mark is and always has been very much a fighter. He teased British title level at Heavyweight as a pro (The classic v Danny Williams) and was also a big noise in the cage up to championship level at heavyweight. Mark always gave the viewing public value for money in both codes with his aggressive style meant that many of his opponents in either ring or octagon never saw the final bell.

Mark has already had some radio therapy and the chemo journey will start soon.

I'm sure I speak for all Boxrec forum members in wishing Mark prolonged health and happiness and luck and god's blessing with this fight of his life. Mark has a very good loving family behind him and the positivity will hopefully drive him on. He is certainly no quitter and it will certainly take more than poxy cancer to stop him inside the distance.

Look at Mark and his wifes Instagram pages for his 'go fund me' page address to help fight cancer.

Good luck and good health Mark.

That it is still shocking to people when people get cancer is shocking to me. The message must still not be getting out there or people are in denial. 1 in 2 will get cancer in their lifetime. Toss a coin, call heads or tails and there's your odds. Steel yourself to the idea early and you'll hopefully cope better mentally than you would do if you think you would be shocked if you found out tomorrow you had developed this disease you are highly likely to develop sooner or later.

All the best to Mark and his family.

The WBC have kindly sent Mark a nice letter wishing him well accompanied by a WBC medal. A lovely gesture.

Hope he pulls through. First saw him on a cage rage show. His opponent was a goofy looking big fella who came to the cage with all his kids. Mark then came out looking mean as hell. He proceeded to give the other guy an absolute beating.

Mark's step son has been killed in a shooting at a party in London, terrible thing to happen to the family.

I was gutted when I heard of Pottsy’s illness.

Pottsy was myself & Rhino’s favourite boxer when he boxed … I will never forget the Danny Williams fight at the Wembley Conference Centre.

Could someone DM me his number.

Just in case anyone's crapping their pants, that infamous stat is based on people born 1930-1960. That generation have not lived the most responsible of lives what with their smoking, drinking, bad diets and obesity. It won't necessarily apply to subsequent generations, and a lot of millennials and zoomers (sorry to employ these hideous expressions) are more health conscious and informed on diet and fitness than boomers who didn't know any better.

That's not to say a specimen like Potter can't still get it, or a young person with no vices, but the 1-in-2 stat is likely worse than it sounds.

That is sad news. A very brave fighter. Tough as old boots, and a really lovely guy, by all accounts. Thank you for the memories.
