It was 12 rounds and it was the lineal champ fighting. Had Frazier won he would have become lineal champ. So it was for 'the title', even tho a sanctioning body didn't recognise it.
I thought Holmes was WBC champion at the time, but that wasn't on the line. Title fights were also 15 rounds in those days.
No, Holmes had engaged in several 12 round WBC world title fights prior to Frazier -- Rodriguez, Witherspoon, Frank.
