Co-feature: Paul Fleming v Jackson England at super featherweight

Fleming owns a suite of regional belts in this division, has the 27-0-1 record. England at 13-1-0 and hails from Perth, a former Australian champion, owns a few belts of his own in the oceania region. Hopefully this bout can up the quality a fraction.

Nice start from Jackson England

Switches stances multiple times, lands the better shots to my eye in that round, certainly a substantial lift in quality from the remainder of the undercard. And Fleming goes down in the second! Standing count. He’s back in the fight but lovely work from England, who is switching all the time.

Cut over the eye of England, some drama for him now

He dropped Fleming in round two but Fleming came back very strong to finish the round as the fresher fighter. England trying to get that advantage back in round three as blood runs down his face.

Terrific fight through four rounds

I’m not going to even try and score those last couple, really willing stuff from both men, Fleming wailing away from outside, had England hurt there. But the younger main regains his composure and lands some terrific inside uppercuts and hurts Fleming with some body work. Anyone’s contest.

It’s just stand and deliver for both men out there

Big shots being landed, both chins being tested, but England maybe just getting on top here through six. Fleming throws a few shots after the bell, he didn’t seem to hear it, and no major harm done.

Fleming struggling with that cut

He was given the all clear by the doctor mid-round but the blood keeps getting in his eye, they are working hard on that in the corner. It’s been absolutely brutal out there, the round two knockdown to England really looking vital now on the cards.

What. A. Fight.

Absolutely sensational fight, Fleming might have taken that last round, genuine domestic fight of the year candidate. Exceptional toughness from both men, they both threw 600+ punches. Lots of power shots in there to boot. Can’t pick a winner to be honest, maybe England via that round two knockdown.

Big shame it was hidden behind a 50 buck pricetag. if its as you say it would of been great to get that boxing infront of the australian public.

The winner by unanimous decision is Paul Fleming

It’s 95-94, 95-94, 97-92 and that’s a small surprise to me. No robbery but given he was knocked down in round two, that’s an amazing win from Paul Fleming. I though England landed the better shots for big portions of that right but that’s why I’m sitting here typing. A wonderful effort from both men.

Our main event is not far away

The one and only Uncle Allan Madden providing the Welcome to Country, he’s a Gadigal Elder and usually has a few sweet gags up his sleeve as well. Here’s a little of the Fleming-England action as well (a cheeky one after the bell from Fleming)

Righto, we have some movement at last as SBW makes his way to the ring

He’s adorned in the black and white of New Zealand, looks in good shape, ready to go. Barry Hall in there as well, the introductions unfolding, let’s make this happen.

It’s OVER in one round

Away we go, eight x three minute rounds. I’ll take you round by round tonight. And SBW lands two heavy shots right away, he looks so much bigger than Hall, has about 10kg on him. And Hall is DOWN. He’s up and DOWN again! And it’s OVER.

RESULTS

Former Rugby League and Rugby Union football legend Sonny Bill Williams (9-0, 4 KOs) destroyed Australian Rules football legend Barry Hall (0-1-1) in the first round on Wednesday night at the Aware Super Theatre, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Sonny Bill connected with two hard shots. Hall wobbled and went down. The fight continued and Williams dropped Hall again to end it. Time was 1:55.

Unbeaten 2008 Olympian super featherweight Paul Fleming (27-0-1, 18 KOs) won a hard-fought ten round unanimous decision over Jackson Jon England (13-1, 8 KOs). Fleming recovered from a second round knockdown to win 95-94, 95-94, 97-92.

Pro-debuting Rahim Mundine, son of former world champion Anthony Mundine, outpointed Lepani Levatia (1-5, 1 KO) over four 40-37, 40-37, 39-37.

Cruiserweight Bilal Akkawy (21-1-1, 16 KOs) dominated Sebastian Singh (13-5-3, 8 KOs) over eight rounds, winning 60-54, 60-54, 60-54

That was a complete mismatch in the end

And the end didn’t take very long. SBW knocks Barry Hall down three times in the first round and it’s game over. Williams looked so much bigger and stronger than Hall, who is 45, and the former AFL man really doesn’t want much more in this caper.

Once again with SBW, very hard to tell if he has much of a future in the fight game on that evidence.

Says Paul Gallen might be next, which would probably be fun, but not exactly the kind of fight that makes SBW a serious name in the sport. But he won’t care because he is making heaps of cash, which is what the fight game is really all about.

Gotta give it to Sonny bill. He is a freak athlete. one of those guys i would of liked to see have a carrer in boxing but shit he got some stuff done playing footy...

-Played in 3 rugby union world cups, won 2.
-Was one of the top Rugby league players by the time he was about 18 and went on to win multiple minor and mayjor premierships.
- Can box a bit.

Hope he stays busy Gallen or lucus brown next... OR go chin Nick Campbell over in the UK seeing as he already trains over there...

He’s been training in morecombe with Parker and Fury for months in the UK

I’m not suggesting that’s like training with Emanuel Steward at Kronk in it’s prime : but as a heavyweight novice is there anywhere better to be than training and sparring with the ring magazine #1 and #5

Barry Hall indeed… gives me great pleasure seeing disbelief on fans of other sports faces who thought their “local hardman” could conquer all in boxing .
