Enzo gives up WBU :o

Maccarinelli gives up WBU title

Maccarinelli says the WBU title was a stepping stone
Enzo Maccarinelli has relinquished his WBU cruiserweight belt after three years and seven successful defences.
The Swansea man, 25, won the interim WBO crown when he stopped Marcelo Dominguez in Cardiff last month.

He will be handed the WBO title if champion Johnny Nelson does not face face him in the autumn, with 14 October a possible date for the showdown.

"The WBU was my stepping-stone belt, now I have my eyes on bigger things," Maccarinelli told the South Wales Echo.

"It looks like the Nelson fight could be on the 14 October show in Manchester, but I've not heard anything definite.

"First we have to see if Nelson signs up for it."

Sheffield man Nelson, 39, has held the belt for seven years, but a serious knee injury in March scuppered a July bout with Maccarinelli and threatened to end his career.

He has a record of 45-12-2 (9 KOs) and has not lost since 1995, while big-punching Maccarinelli's card reads 14-1 (18 KOs).

Any thoughts for me just dispair that anyone would take the WBU and the joy that he will have the WBO (is it realy that much better)

lol yeh my thoughts too. Thats why I think Haye should be higher in the British rankings cos he has fought for a real title that means something and enzo has fought crap for a non title.

Glad Enzo has ditched the WBU belt but is the WBO Interim belt any improvement? No...but it does lead to a showdown with Nelson...apparently. I personally doubt that this on/off saga will draw any conclusion, Nelson himself spelled it out after the the Haye-Abdoul "fight" that it was wishful thinking he would face Enzo anytime soon.

Macarinelli should be focusing on the European stage and a possible meeting with Haye instead of all this fake world title malarky.

Well, then according to the rules (which I do know can be broken) then Nelson will get stripped a Enzo should be awarded the championship proper.

The interim belt is a better route than the WBU - surely soon the WBO will give Nelson a date he must fight Enzo, and if he cannot make - then he will be stripped.
