Best current British prospects
Best current British prospects
Was reading the latest issue of BN this morning and one question they posed the panel this week was who is the best prospect in Britain right now - while it contained some of the 'usual suspects', there is clearly a bigger pool of talent out there so would like to hear what you guys think.
The BN panel listed:
Hopey Price
Pat McCormack
Galai Yafai
Dalton Smith
i was racking my brains on who else could qualify and came up with:
Adam Azim
Caoimhin Agyarko
Karol Itauma
Luke McCormack
Dennis McCann (though his career seems to have stalled a bit?)
Cheavon Clarke
Frazer Clarke
i haven't put them in any particular order, though both Clarkes are the wrong side of 30 (age not such a barrier in the higher weight divisions though i guess).
Who's missing and who do you think could make it to world title level?!
Yafai for me feels like the best prospect of the lot, but I feel I haven't personally seen enough of the likes of Price, Smith and Azim, hence wanting to hear from others...

Re: Best current British prospects
galal is 30 this year and is 1-0 at flyweight, where 30 is already up there. they better super fast track him
sheeraz has impressed me at times, but at times fights a bit lazy. i really like his offensive tools though and he's huge. is he still a prospect?
will be interesting to see how this generation of olympians filled with 'career amateurs' who turn pro at 26+ do. in general the older the age the guys turn pro once theyre in the mid 20s, the bigger the chance of a letdown compared to their amateur days. galal 30 this year, cheavon 32, fraser 31, the mccormacks 27 ....they were all basically fully mature men fighting in the ams (often vs far younger opponents) and now have less time to develop as pros.

His first bout was a 10 rounder. Wasn't it for a regional belt, so should help him get into the rankings.. A few more of them and he's mandatory, unless Hearn can pay off a belt holder.

I tipped Price on here when he was 15. He's 21. Clarke is 30. McCormack is 20 odd. McGrail is very good.

Smith and Price are red hot. Seen loads of them since they were kids as they're my region.Deserter wrote: ↑26 Mar 2022, 06:04 Was reading the latest issue of BN this morning and one question they posed the panel this week was who is the best prospect in Britain right now - while it contained some of the 'usual suspects', there is clearly a bigger pool of talent out there so would like to hear what you guys think.

Yep, was hoping you would weigh in on them mate as know how highly you rate them. Good shout re. McGrail as well, I shouldn’t have overlooked him as like what I’ve seen of him so far.mickey1975 wrote: ↑26 Mar 2022, 10:14Smith and Price are red hot. Re: Best current British prospects
Few decent prospects around but I feel they sent busy enough. weird now that prospects are strait to TV making real money and not fighting regularly. I mean it's always happened but I think it's more extreme now. Makes it hard to have the best preparation for a pro career.
If my son/brother/ friend was a good amature turning pro and wasn't an Olympic medalist and was 26 or less my advice would be crush cans for a year. Literally 12+ cans in 12 months, even if you had to go to Mexico and pay the bartender to scrap. Once you've got your 12 cans start stepping up slowly, couple 6 rounders, couple 8s, couple 10s. If your good enough after 2 years your 18-0 ready for a 12 rounders hunting a British title.. win British, defend British, then your 20-0 after euro, win euro defend euro, then your 22-0 hunting world titles, a nice pretty record.
I wish it wasn't nessasary, I love Lomas progression, but if your not 'the GOAT amature" noone wants to fight a high level fight vs a 6-0 guy. Only get one chance to crush cans without judgement, I think it's worth capitalising on.

I've kept an eye on Price since Mickey tipped him. He's looked outstanding so far but it's a shame he's had so few fights. I think it was also Mickey that mentioned he has 2 younger brothers that are very good.mickey1975 wrote: ↑26 Mar 2022, 10:13 I tipped Price on here when he was 15. He's 21. Clarke is 30. Ellis and Morales. Ellis was going to the Europeans until covid struck. He'll be ready to turn over soon.Pugilist-specialist wrote: ↑29 Mar 2022, 02:52I've kept an eye on Price since Mickey tipped him. Re: Best current British prospects
I'd say Dennis McCann is up there with all those mentioned and recently came through a good 8 rounder recently.
Not sure his career has stalled....4 fights in the last 12 months is pretty good in modern day boxing terms.

I've seen them say that Morales is the best of the lot but people often say that about little brothers. I even heard it about Naz's younger brothermickey1975 wrote: ↑29 Mar 2022, 08:23Ellis and Morales. Ellis was going to the Europeans until covid struck. Re: Best current British prospects
It’s good that he’s been active but I think he’s shown some of his flaws in recent fights. He’s gone the distance in 4 of his last 5 whilst early days he showed promising power (not many stop Fidoe) and guys who are fairly limited (Tondo) have given him tougher fights than you’d expect.
He’s a good prospect but I can’t see him reaching world level whilst with some of the other prospects mentioned I’d be surprised if they don’t.
Re: Best current British prospects
I didn't mean so much his volume of fights mate, more that from what I'd seen early doors I expected him to kick on in terms of standard of opposition etc and be beating his most recent opponents more convincingly. Definitely not writing him off, as I remember how someone like Froch looked like against Adamu, for example, but I still think it's a valid point.
Re: Best current British prospects
Ok
Yep, still think he's being brought along ok. With the recent 8 rounds he's completed McCann is proving he's adapting to the pros.
No need to rush this guy as didn't hang around in the amateurs. Let's see what he's up to in 5 more fights.
Always a concern when a precocious talent is being handled by W@rren and will their potential be achieved

Re: Best current British prospects
Dennis Mccann is reminding me a bit of Tony Collins. He has looked sensational at times but how far can he go? Above European?
Re: Best current British prospects
I think McCann has better defensive smarts than Tony Collins and a better temperament. Tony had difficulty controlling his temper at the start of his career.
The word is McCann is dedicated to boxing and takes the game seriously. The same could not be said of Collins unfortunately.
