I very much doubt Tyson runs his social media accounts considering he has Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, TikTok and Twitter accounts (maybe others) with many millions of followers. Plus his own official website too. He would have a PR person doing that all.Caractacus wrote: ↑24 Feb 2022, 15:45 Because I dont do Facebook dude

No it's not, we are talking about when Tyson was a pro and preparing to fight Peter McNeeley in 1995, in his comeback fight after being released from prison, apparently an amateur boxer almost knocked him out in sparring.Boxingguru75 wrote: ↑06 Mar 2022, 12:29 Someone else answered but it was Al Evans. Al Evans was years before this, he knocked Tyson out when they both fought as amateurs in 1982, Tyson was only 16 years old and Evans was 27

Al not Mike Evans. It describes it in the link provided I think, I remember years ago when Tyson was unbeaten a UK newspaper showed a photo of Tyson on the floor in this fight, they ran a feature about the world baddest man being knocked out before.Caractacus wrote: ↑07 Mar 2022, 13:24 what were the circumstances and details of Mike Evans having knocked out Mike Tyson anyway ?

Mike Tyson writes about it in his book, claims the 3rd knockdown was a slip when the ref stopped the fight..

Found this elsewhere…
Of course, there's some controversy about what happened as some insist Tyson slipped and Evans hit Mike while he was on the canvas. But future sports legend and Tyson rival Evander Holyfield, who is believed to have witnessed the fight, told LA Times in 1989:
“I saw him get hit on the chin and fall on his face. He was beating the guy [Evans] from pillar to post and jumped in with a left hook. He got clocked.”
Afterwards, Tyson trainer Kevin Rooney said he thought the KO loss was good for Mike, insisting Tyson would be more careful about leaving his chin exposed in the future.

Re: Who was the Amateur Boxer who "almost" knocked out Mike Tyson ?
well, we will just try and figure out who it may have been by process of eleimination.
who were the top LH/HW amateurs in the USA in 1995 ? (presuming it was an American)
DaVarryl Williamson took up boxing as an amateur in 1993 and turned pro in 2000 (at age 32 yrs)
But could it have been Antonio Tarver ?
he won the Golden Gloves LH title in 1995
and won the Bronze medal in LH in the 1996 Olympics
Tarver turned pro in February 1997 (age 28 yrs)

How common was it for an amateur boxer to spar with a 'seasoned" professional anyway ?
The only one that comes to mind is George Foreman sparring with Sonny Liston before the 1968 Olympics.

It does happen, Holmes was sparring Ali as a novice amateur.Caractacus wrote: ↑09 Mar 2022, 16:39 How common was it for an amateur boxer to spar with a 'seasoned" professional anyway ?

Holmes has said it in interviews, around 1971/72 I think and Holmes didn't turn pro until 1973. Holmes didn't have many amateur fights either or much success.

Re: Who was the Amateur Boxer who "almost" knocked out Mike Tyson ?
It's not that uncommon especially if the sparring partner is the height, size or similar style to the opponent they are training for. Frazer Clarke has sparred with AJ for years as has Hosea Stewart. Wilder was using some German amateur I seem to recall for one of the Fury fights. Sparring is sparring, it's not a fight.Caractacus wrote: ↑09 Mar 2022, 16:39 How common was it for an amateur boxer to spar with a 'seasoned" professional anyway ?

Sparring between amateurs and pros is common practice in most countries. Most teenagers who make their pro debut at 17/18 have probably been sparring pros for years. De La Hoya sparred with Chavez when he was 15/16, etc.
I have seen many pros being embarrased by amateurs in sparring.

Has no one here figured out whom it was as of yet ?
Re: Who was the Amateur Boxer who "almost" knocked out Mike Tyson ?
No not yet. In the late 80's? a novice pro named Mike WIlliams was apparently embarassing tyson in sparring. Tyson when asked about it said "ok, if that's what's being said then roll with it". It was probably exaggerated BS but it was the start of a buildup to a possible future matchup. Then Williams started losing and that was the end of that
p s I was there that day that a 14 year old Tony Ayala embarassed titleholder Pipino Cuevas in a sparring session in 1977

I remember Williams, quite a heavily muscled fighter, I can recall reading about him in Ring Magazine as "one to watch" as you say though he didn't live up to the hype. Just looking on his boxrec bio I does say Bill Cayton said Williams decked Tyson in sparring so maybe true.bollocks wrote: ↑01 Apr 2022, 15:50 No not yet. How were you there for the Cuevas and Ayala sparring session, was it as one sided as some reports claim?
