Probably a musical chairs of champions changing hands every, or every other title fight.
What's interesting about Louis-Schmeling 2 was even though it was a first round KO, Joe actually took his time and started slowly.
What if Joe louis had not come along?

The athmosphere must have been worse then poisonus for Max Schmeling to have walked into Madison Square Garden for the re-match,as if he was going to his own execution.
the closest thing to it that I have seen in recent years must have been Greg Haugen going into the arena in Mexico City
against Julio Caesar Chavez

Actually the fight was at Yankee Stadium.
Guess I wouldn't go that far. Schmeling was a very experienced fighter who had fought at Yankee Stadium before. There were people there rooting for him.

There were people there rooting for Max Schmeling the (by now) bad guy "Nazi" there at Yankee stadium June.22.1938 ?
Are you serious ?
you can even feel the tension and hate in the air being radiated from the blood thirsty masses there in the stadium
just from thegrainy old black and white film footage.

This was before WW II started and and 3 and a half years before the United States entered the war. There were still a lot of people in the United States that get what Hitler and the Nazi's were about. There were also German Americans who supported Schmeling because he was a German. And of course there was racists who wanted to see Louis lose.
